    3. Well to be more precise, I wouldn't mind living in a small town again, but the wife has lived all her life in a large town (more than a Million). I personally never lived in a large town except Edmond OK, until I moved out to Phoenix. Before the the Largest town I lived in was 24,000 people. I have lived in 7 states now and about 30 towns:) But I have worked in the Technology field for so long now. Going back to a small town would drive me up the wall. My parents still live in a small town, and my brother also. Sundown tx is only about 200 people, and Levelland is around 12,000. the Big towns I have lived in are Edmond(OKC), Orlando FL, Phoenix AZ and Austin TX. When I go back home, about once every year or so. I like it for about 3 days. then the small town life begins to smother me. I guess,(since I am only 35 now) in another 30 years that may make a difference. 3. I knew some Millers but not sure of the first names any more. I have been gone for 37 years now all though I have been back and forth. If any of you remember the Taute family I'm part of that. Velma Taute taught school in Golden, Bowen, Costburg, camp Point and other school's in the area. I'm her adopted daughter Linda. Would love to reunite with some old class mates. hope you are out there. Take care. Linda "May the sun shine in your face, May the wind blow at your back, and piece be with you always." Second main road going south in fowler will take you by my great grand uncles farm. taking those back roads you can make it over to payson where my dads cousin is farming.:) heading on to quincy. about a mile outside of fowler you will get to a farm that has a Electrical substation at the corner of the road(this was commonly known as the adams county fair road) (hoping I am remember that road in the proper place) Remember the sub station and the farmer that owned that farm near there lost his wife to a tractor accident 10 or 12 years ago. going on up the road from there you pass by where the Moormans research facility use to be on the north side of the road, (lived there for a bit when I was really young) just beyond that is the new highway they put in so you don't have to go all the way into quincy the back way to make it to down town like in the old days;) That freeway is nice when I drive home I just hit it. take the liberty road out of quincy and go over to three points take columbus road up to 24 and get to either my grandparents house or my aunt and uncles house in coatsburg or head over to camp point ot my other grand parents. 3. Bingo Ken and well said. I was one of those "I can't wait to get out of this town (Quincy)" when I was 18. I got married to a military man, moved all over God's creation for 20 years (including Guam) and then heard myself moaning, "I wanna go home!" We retired from the military, came HOME, settled down, hubby lucked out and found a good job, bought a house and are happy little campers now. I have lived in big cities almost all my married life. Oklahoma City and Jacksonville, FL to name a few. My kids are now growing up in our hometown and they love it. Nothing like being back home and your right, "Never say Never" cause I did and guess what? I came home! 3. Interesting quote that I have heard many times - hope you don't mind if I put my spin on it. "I miss home, But I know that I could never go back to a small town and live again. Not after all the years in the big cities." --- HA! Never say never. I retired from the real estate business "in the big city". A goodly portion of my business was selling retirees 'city' house, so they could go back 'home' to live in retirement. Incidentally, the city house generally sold for about twice what the house back home was bought for. And as to the question, "Aren't you going to miss the theater, stage shows, - all the things to do in the city?" - - - the reply usually was, "We never did that stuff, even though it was available. No, if we see something special going on, it'll be a nice treat to drive in to town." Memphis, where I moved from, has a brand new multi-million dollar library and it is great - but with the Internet, the Blytheville Library connects me to the same information. You can't live in a 'small' town that doesn't have a "WallyWorld" - WalMart to those of you who aren't 'with it'. And if you can't find it at WalMart, you don't need it, anyway. Talk with almost any one just out of school, and they will tell you that they can't wait to get 'out of this town'. Ten years later, if they had any roots back home at all, they are wishing that they could live back home - if there was just a job. After 40 years of toil in the big city, that pension will go a lot further 'back home'. After 40 years your children AND grandchildren are grown. Less crime. Less traffic. Less of everything, but peace and slow. There is a lot to say for 'Peace and Slow.'

    3. wow, you guys bring back some old memories.:) When I lived back home, I lived in several areas in Adams county. Carthage, West Point, Bowen, Camp Point, Coatsburg. When they built the pool in West Point Bowen area, we ran the little Ice Cream stand for the first year or two while it was there. But heading west from Clayton, I 24, you will go pass the Camp Point HS. To downtown Camp Point. Royalties there is family, and the Mixers in Camp Point is family also. Fritz Brierton had a barber shop right off of 24, right next the Milk stand, (which recently became a shop for Making Linings for trucks and the like, if that shop is still there, that is my cousin) Fritz is my Grandfather. in his 80's now and still lives in the house that was the barber shop for the longest time. Close to the Police station.:) going on west. You run into coatsburg, 5 miles from camp point. if you take Columbus road South, My aunt an Uncle live the first road from 24. on that north corner. If you follow it on down south about 3 miles, it would have been the first farm my fathers parents owned. We lived there for a bit. You follow it on through columbus to threepoints you find the entrance to siloam springs (many a family event there) take a left you go to liberty. take a right you go past the air port into Quincy. the next road up over the railroad tracks takes you north into coatsburg, you follow that road up you run past my Grandparents other farm. Continuing on west. next town up is paloma, great resteraunt that got me hooked on Mountain dews at a young age, and of course the great Tenderloins:) and FS. going on west you run into Fowler. believe that is only 2 miles from paloma. Second main road going south in fowler will take you by my great grand uncles farm. taking those back roads you can make it over to payson where my dads cousin is farming.:) heading on to quincy. about a mile outside of fowler you will get to a farm that has a Electrical substation at the corner of the road(this was commonly known as the adams county fair road) (hoping I am remember that road in the proper place) Remember the sub station and the farmer that owned that farm near there lost his wife to a tractor accident 10 or 12 years ago. going on up the road from there you pass by where the Moormans research facility use to be on the north side of the road, (lived there for a bit when I was really young) just beyond that is the new highway they put in so you don't have to go all the way into quincy the back way to make it to down town like in the old days;) That freeway is nice when I drive home I just hit it. take the liberty road out of quincy and go over to three points take columbus road up to 24 and get to either my grandparents house or my aunt and uncles house in coatsburg or head over to camp point ot my other grand parents. I miss home, But I know that I could never go back to a small town and live again. not after all the years in the big cities. 2. I had been to Quincy many times as a child...always from Carthage (my hometown) through West Point, Stillwell, Loraine, etc.and knew the "back way" as we called it fairly well. I haven't lived in Carthage for fifteen years. While coming back from St. Louis this past spring, I drove the "new road" from Quincy to West Point for the first time and was really impressed...I knew where I was but constantly thought I was a little "off" because everything was on the "wrong side of the road" from where I remember it. I probably spent too much time looking away from the road in an attempt to constantly determine exactly where I was! My paternal grandmother lived in Loraine at the time of her marriage in 1935. I've got many maternal relatives in the Golden and Coatsburg areas, but the bulk of my family were from southern Hancock County. 3. Sorry made ONE big goof on my last email for directions to Woodland Cemetery. When you come to the top of the hill after turning on Jefferson Street and heading East, when you get to 5th street go RIGHT not left like a stated in other email. 1020 South 5th Street is the address for Woodland Cemetery. 3. To get to Woodland Cemetery (I am assuming your are coming from St Louis area since you said 61 North). If you are on 61 North in Missouri, you can get off 61 in Hannibal, MO and go east on 36/172 towards the river. There should be a Walgreens on your left when you get to the exit. You will cross over the bridge in Hannibal and it will bring you out near Hull, IL. Stay on 172 and go towards Quincy. You will see signs that state (I believe) Quincy and I think it says Springfield on the other. You will take the one that says Quincy. Then you will be on 172 or 72. Stay on this road until you see Hwy 57 Marblehead or Fall Creek Exit. Should be about 5-7 miles or so. Get off on this exit and go left (north) after you come to the end of the ramp. You will go under the overpass. You will be on Hwy 57 and it will take you along the East side of the river towards Quincy. Watch your speed because the Adams County Sheriff loves these roads at different times. Stay on this road until you come into Quincy and you will see a sign that says Jefferson Street. You will pass Gardner Denver Co. and it should be the next light (it will be a traffic light and on your left will be a plant called CELOTEX) and then go right at the light. You will get to the top of the hill and you will see Woodland Cemetery on your left. You take (I think its the 1st road to your right (5th Street)) a right and go down about 2-3 blocks and you will see the entrance to Woodland Cemetery. The Cemetery is fairly large so be prepared. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/Wg.2ADE/3868.1.1.1 Message Board Post: Hi Lynnea, The names & dates are as follows: B.I. 1815-1871; Elizabeth (His Wife) 1821-1899; Corpl. Wm., Co.D, 137 Ill. Inf.; Ida 1862-1882; Eddie 1864-1864; Anna 1850-1854; Alfred I. 1848-1896; Sarah E.(His Wife) 1849-1906. Sarah's date of interment is given as Sept.16, 1906 in the cemetery index. I noticed there were other Chattens buried in the same area as these folks. Are you taking 61 North all the way past Palmyra, Marion Co., Mo.? If so, about 10 miles north of Palmyra you'll come to highway 24, which will take you into Quincy. As soon as you get off the bridge, turn right. You'll be on route 57, going south. It will seem like quite aways, but go until you hit the second stop light. This will be Jefferson St. Turn left, then take the first right. You are now at Woodland Cemetery. The entrance is 1 1//2 blocks down the street. To get to the Chatten graves--when you get into the cemetery take the first right turn. Just as the road starts to curve back to the left, there's a large old tree stump on the left hand side. The Chatten plot is about 50 feet in from that stump, towards the center of the cemetery. There's actually a sort of cement step with B.I. Chatten chiseled on it. If none of this makes sense, please let me know, and I'll try to explain it better. If you knew when you'd be coming thru town, I could mark the site for you somehow. Hope this helps. Libby

That's the problem with e-mail and the written word....you can't hear people's "tone of voice" as they write it! :-) I am not offended in the least....I'm just glad you mentioned the little corner of the world that my family came from! If you have family and friends in that area, do you by any chance know any of the Donleys? My grandfather (Dale Anderson Donley) started the Big Neck 4-H Pig Club back in 1927, and was involved with it for 50 years.
