Surnames: Culp, Wagner, Tourney, Allens, Dennis Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/Wg.2ADE/3881.1.1 Message Board Post: visited the Culp/Tourney graves last summer in Missouri. After, Maria married Franklin and he died she married Peter Moulin. Aunt Esther Culp died in Liberty Adams County 1858. Her son, named after her brother Francis Marion Culp was adopted by my great, great grandfather Daniel Culp. He became Francis Milton Culp, Jr. His brother Jefferson kept his Tourney name.. and we are not sure who raised him but both of them are buried in the Scottsville, Mitchell County, Kansas Cemetary. You will find different spellings at different times. I may have missed something in your query.....but Maria and Ester were not the same person. Incidently, George is buried next to my great uncle Newton Jasper Culp, Civil War Casualty, in the Pleasant View Cemetery, Liberty, Adams, IL. We can't find Ester/Hester's grave. In our Culp family we know her as Hester. George remarried Elizabeth Allen. Isabelle Culp, born Dearborn, IN in 1830 married Peter Tourney in 1850. He passed away and she married Peter Moulin about 1850. She died in 1914 and along with Tourneys and Moulins is buried in Hill Cemetery, Davis County, Mo. where they migrated to in 1857. Maria, born in 1834 married Franklin Tourney Aug. 7, 1853. Not much info on Franklin and Maria. Their brother, Benjamin Dennis Culp and his wife Martha Van Dusen headed to Missouri also. They are actually buried less then five miles away in the Fairview Cemetery in Harrison County, MO. It very well could have been the same county when they all arrived in Missouri. We have a contingency of about 8 Culps who go back to the different branches starting in NY. However, I knew the granddaughter of George and Franklin Tourney. My Culps migrated to Kansas. Hope this will be of some help. This is the same message that I sent in reply to Mary's note. Some questions. The children that you list are not George and Esters.. Who was the mother? The sister to Ester/Hester Culp was Clarinda and she married Nathan Allen. They then moved to Mitchell County, Kansas with her father Daniel Culp and brothers Charles Woodward Culp, Francis Marion Culp and Francis Milton Culp, Jr. We believe that Nathan's sister was Elizabeth. Nathan's father wwas Asa Allen. I am in contact with some of the Allens, also. Priscilla Kruger Mowinkel

Surnames: Smith Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/Wg.2ADE/3884 Message Board Post: My GGGrandparents, William Coats and Sarah Jane Smith, moved to Adams County with his daughter and son-in-law, Reuben and Emily Maxwell, some time between 1870 and 1880. They came from Henry County, IL. They were all farmers here in Henry County and when they are listed in the Adams Co. Census William is a shoemaker and Maxwell is a carpenter. I'm looking for an historian in Adams Co to ask what might have drawn them there. William and Sarah were in their late 60's or early 70's when they moved. It seems like a long move for their age. They were born in New Jersey and went to Warren Co, Ohio in the 1830's then on to Henry Co, in 1857. I just wondered if they went to Adams Co for jobs, religion or were there other family members there? If anyone has any ideas I'd appreciate a reply. Thanks. Steve

    2. Ken Reeder
    3. Never heard of a Historical Society getting this involved in one family before. Is this an idea that the local society could use? ----------- Each year at the annual Knott County Gingerbread Festival, one of the county's families are honored throughout the Festival. For 2003 the Festival Committee has decided to honour the Jacobs families of Knott and Eastern Kentucky. The Festival takes place in September on the weekend following Labor Day, beginning Wednesday through Sunday. Throughout the year, the Knott County Historical Society begins the arduous task of locating Jacobs family researchers and then creates a Jacobs Family Research & Documentation Committee. This committee begins working on a publication to exhibit at the Societies facilities for visitors to peruse during the Festival. Sometimes the committees formed decide to publish a book of the family's history to be sold during the Festival. The Society also seeks volunteers to assist in preparing the museum for family exhibits, window displays, floats, etc. The success of the family's honor depends upon how many family members are willing to assist in a volunteer manner. If interested in helping the Society with this project Click here or http://www.coollist.com/subscribe.html - then type in the LIST ID box: jacobs Then type in your email address where you want to receive the postings for the list in the box provided for your email address. If you have ties to the Eastern Kentucky sept of Jacobs, please contact me. Thanks. David R. Smith, Pres. Knott County Historical Society knothist@tgtel.com

    2. PS
    3. The name was changed because of the census taker. When you listen to Tournear with a very heavy French accent, it sounds like Tourney. George Tournear's children used Tourney, although it's probable that every variation in spelling is the same family. They were quite a large family and didn't arrive together, as the father was running from Napolean's assassins. Peg Spencer

War Veteran - it mentions he was given special burial as the only Revolutionary War Veteran in Adams County. With him was buried a Frenchman. Family story: when Nepoleon was taken prisoner in 1815, he had two bodyguards. One man was killed, the second man escaped and disappeared. This Frenchman named Tournear, who was buried near Liberty in the late 1830's, is believed to be the long lost Napoleonic guard...... I would appreciate any thing you can find on Robert Dean Gould. An obituary would be really great. I live in Michigan and although I have wanted to go to Quincy,IL for years, just never seem to be able to get there. I am wondering if Robert even has a headstone. By 1926 all of my Goulds had moved to KS or MI except Robert. Thanks for your kind offer to look for an obituary -- it would be great if you could find one.
