The St. Louis Public Library has one of the very best Genealogy Labara . They have EVERY states census records on film and indexed to. Use the Labara down town. Use should be able to check all the census records there easily, as well as passage records for Germans. Check the 1900 census records, as part of that records required them to list the years they came to US. Not always accurate, but its a point of reference, a place to start. Marriage records did not always have family names on them, not until the state required records, which made it standardized. Some counties keep very good records some did not. The churches in Quincy keep very god records and you may find the info from them. Was the Abelin family Catholic? If so the Catholic church may be able to help you, with several different kinds of documents. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Tim Nix" <nixtim@auden.webster.edu> To: <ILADAMS-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, November 01, 2002 2:11 PM Subject: Re: [ILADAMS] Marriage records... > Sue: > > I've seen quite a few spellings for the name: Abel, Abelen, plus the > ones you mentioned. Hi all, I am looking for a cemetery in Loraine. Does anyone have a cemetery book with the loraine cemeteries in it. I am looking for the burials of Norris David Harris and Beatrice Vinson (Fletcher) Harris. They are supposed to be burried in the Loraine cemetery. I am also looking for Walter George Helmreich burried in the St. Peter cemetery in Camp Point. It might be to late for the cemetery books because he died in 1999 Thank you Shawnnee
Sue: I've seen quite a few spellings for the name: Abel, Abelen, plus the ones you mentioned. I even found them after much searching in the 1860 census, and only afterward realized why I couldn't find them in the index: the name had been misread as "Aheln". However, even checking misspellings, I've had little luck. I only recently found them in 1880 (only because familysearch.org put up that index), and I still can't find them in 1870. Probably part of the reason I haven't found them in other records is because I'm in St. Louis, and Quincy is far enough away that the other records aren't immediately available locally. -Tim Nix Sue Masten wrote: >In my line the name Abeln was spelled two different ways.. >Able, and Abelin. In my line the name Abeln was spelled two different ways.. Able, and Abelin. You may want to check these other spellings to see what you find. My Able family came from Diedesfeld Germany and married into the Glas / Glass line in the early 1800's. The glass family did move to Quincy IL. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Tim Nix" <nixtim@auden.webster.edu> To: <ILADAMS-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, November 01, 2002 3:28 AM Subject: [ILADAMS] Marriage records... > Does anyone know what sort of information is in the Adams Co. marriage > records that are available on microfiche from the LDS collection? Does anyone know what sort of information is in the Adams Co. marriage records that are available on microfiche from the LDS collection? It appears to be a filming of a four-volume book called "Marriages of Adams County, Illinois", it says it was "compiled by members of GRGS", and it covers 1825-1899. What I'm hoping is that it contains full marriage records, especially the names of the parents of the bride and groom. Incidentally, the family I'm researching is that of Frederick Abeln (b. ABT 1829 in Oldenburg, d. BEF 1880 probably in Quincy) and Louise Bergman (b. 15. Aug. 1829 in Germany, d. 9. Mar. 1903 in St. Louis). They were married 21. Apr. 1857 in Adams Co. and had seven children (Elisabeth, Margaret, Amalie, Mathilda, Bernadina, Anna, & John). I have very little info on Frederick (basically, everything I mentioned above), and no information on Fred's and Louise's parents/siblings. If anyone has any information, I'd appreciate it. Thanks. -Tim Nix

I took my trusty digital camera (and my impatient husband) and took pictures of every headstone in Evergreen and Pleasant View which had my ancestor's names. No notes, just photos. On return to Calif, woe is me, only half the Smartmedia disk is readable (even with disk restoration software). I have all the Evergreen photos, but none of the Pleasant View. I live 2410 miles from there, and I hope someone can help me. On some fine day, if the mood strikes you, could you, kind reader, take photos of headstones for my folks (see surnames) for which I will gladly repay any expenses. I'll always remember Adams County in the autumn. Everyone with ancestors there should visit.
