This priest is buried in St. Peter's cemetery in Quincy. Catholic News Service Statue dedicated to slave-born first U.S. black priest EAST ST. LOUIS, Ill. (CNS) -- Calling a Catholic priest born into slavery a role model for young blacks, Bishop Wilton D. Gregory of Belleville dedicated a statue of Father Augustine Tolton Nov. 3. The six-foot, 1,200-pound statue of the first U.S.-born African-American priest stands in a small park across the street from St. Patrick Church in East St. Louis, near where Father Tolton lived as a child. "Young people need good role models," the bishop said. "Our young people today cannot imagine how many obstacles stood before that young man and yet he was courageous enough to pursue his vocation to the priesthood." Father Tolton was born a slave near Hannibal, Mo., in 1854. After his father, Peter, escaped to join the Union Army, the young boy, also known as Augustus, fled with his mother and siblings across the river to free territory in Illinois. The family settled in Quincy. Augustine went on to study for the priesthood in Rome and served at churches in Quincy and Chicago. Of the 3 couples you didn't have dates for, I could find only one, but with a different spouse--Louisa Merrill m. Sylvester M. Finley Feb.13, 1866. I'm sure you already know that Abijah Merrill m.Priscilla Cunningham April 24, 1846. I simply couldn't find the others. As for Henry Abijah, no sign of him, either. In fact, I didn't find any Merrills buried in Beverly. Did find a "Baby Merrill" in Woodland Cem., Quincy, who died Aug. 9, 1902--obviously not the Henry you're looking for. I tried different spellings of the name, but with no luck. Sorry. Libby

I had seen several Muegge's on the list last week and wondered if they had a pedigree back to the descendants of Frederich Christoff Muegge b <1768-1797>. My maternal grandmother's sister married a Muegge and I have Pedigree for him, also Henry F. Muegge b.25DEC1853, Peter Henry Muegge b. 01Jul1851, David Muegge b. <1802-1831>,Wm. P. Muegge b<1836-1857>, and Alonzo Shepherd b. <1836-1865>. Alzono's grandson, Floyd Muegge married my g-aunt Dorothy Hess. If I can fill in any holes, let me know. Paula B.

He was placed on a farm, and ran away later on ended up married to my g.grandmother, and lived in Walnut Grove Township, Mcdonough, Co all the rest of his life. This Frank and Cordia were married in Warren Co. In Franks Obituary it said all his family was deceased, but someone wrote to his son and said, he was a brother and still living. I would love if we had a connection. Oh yeah, the census is incorrect, on the State, my Frank Cross was born in Denver Color, the father died and Sarah and the children returned to Illinois.
