He was born in 1812 in Logan Co., KY and died 1892 in Saline County, Missouri - he is buried there. He married Rebekah last name unknown. Her vitals - 1816 in KY and died 1871 in Saline Co., MO. She is also buried there. According to 1860 & 1880 censuses, they had following children: John b. c. 1842 ; Maria b. c.1844 ; Sarah b. c. 1845; Nancy "Nannie" b. c. 1854 and Lawrence/Laurence b. c. 1858. It appears that daughter Maria married a Darrah (Joel?) and was living in 1920 with a nephew John S. Arnold of Keene, Adams Co. Nancy "Nannie" married a Brown. Lawrence/Laurence married in 1875 to Octavia Catherine "Kate" Miller (my great aunt). The marriage occured in Grand Pass Twp., Saline Co., MO. They had two children: Orange F. Nelson b. c. 1879 in Mo & Coila Esmene Nelson b. 1883 in Mo. I have her immediate family documented. I know that the Nelson's were Baptist and found an interesting bit of info on Wm. Nelson. He was appointed from the township of Houston to be an Assistant Marshal For the Lincoln Douglas Debate - Oct. 13, 1858. Thanks! Diane Carter

This has been a brick wall for a long time. I have: Robert P. VANCE, carpenter, age 48 from Virginia and Ann age 62 from MD (Is ANN his wife or mother, sister?????). According to Adams County IL 1850 census. They lived next door to John W. Hutchens (probably Jonathon W. HUTCHINSON) saddler, age 24 from OH and Sarah A. age 20 from KY. and Helen U. 6 months from IL. A marriage. From Adams Co. Illinois 1850 census. A marriage record from Adams Co. IL lists Jonathon W. HUTCHINSON married Sarah A. VANCE Dec. 10, 1848. Robert VANCE living next door is probably Sarah's father. Robert is listed in Adams Co. City directory about this same time. This was possibly a boarding house he ran. He is listed as witness in several minor court cases. If he were the owner or manager of a boarding house he probably was called as witness in several domestic incidences. I have a land record from Adams County IL 1840 for a Robert Pinkerton VANCE. I'm relatively sure this is my Robert P. VANCE. A Robert VANCE appears in the 1840 census of Adams Co. IL. Then the 1850 census following as listed above. On marriage records of Jonathon W. HUTCHINSON's children in Vigo County, IN Sarah's maiden name is some times listed as VANCE on others it is listed as Mc GILL. I believe that come confusion existed and perhaps Sarah's mother's name was Mc Gill. Also note that Sarah A. HUTCHINSON purchased cemetery plots next to a Samuel McGILL in Woodlawn Cemetery, Vigo Co. IN. These were purchased on the same day. Some of Sarah's children and grandchildren are buried on this plot. Samuel Mc GILL was a businessman in Terre Haute, In and owner of lumber yard and editor of newspaper in Rockville, IN. He is buried in Parke Co. IN. No documented relationship has been found to Sarah A. Also note that the Hutchinson family is also listed in the 1850 census of Brown Co. ILL. Believed they moved and were re-listed as Brown Co. residents. However more of the HUTCHINSON family is listed as living with Jonathon and Sarah in Brown Co. Finally, the 1840 census of Adams Co. IL lists a Samuel Hitchens (spelling hard to read). Could this have been Jonathon's father I have also in Adams county IL found a few other VANCE names living outside the city of Quincy. I do not have that data with me tonight. I have speculatged that these folks were related, but have little on them. I was in Adams Co IL a few years ago and could find little other than census which I already had and the one City Directory and court cases. After 1850 I can find NO record of Robert VANCE anywhere in this area or for that matter several other areas I've investigated. I'd love ANY information on this line. I have the 1920 Mclean Co census for Allin Twp, Stanford. I found these Witham's listed: Witham, Warren (Head), age 43, owns free-of-mortgage Pearl, wife, age 42 Witham, William (Head), age 71, widow, owns, free-of-mort. They apparently lived next door to each other. The elder Witham was born in Ohio as were his parents. Warren was born in IL, as was Pearl. This may be a connection to your Witham family. Shari
