His name is Harry Edward Demoss and he says he was born in Adams County, IL in 1872. This was on one of his children's birth certificates that I have a copy of. He died in 1930 in Louisiana. I am searching for his parents. He married a girl who was 20 years younger than him...he got her out of a girl's orphanage in St. Louis when she was 19 years old. They ended up living in Hannibal, MO and also in Warrenton, MO, where most of their children were born. They ended up in Cass Cty, TX. He supposedly had Native American blood... his daughter said "Harry's daddy was a Frenchman and his mother was an Indian." Does this Demoss ring any bells at all? He often put South Dakota as his place of birth and his descendants think he was a Lakota Sioux on the Rose Bud Reservation there. However, I believe he was born in Adams County IL. He also supposedly had another wife & family when he married the orphan girl. Sometime during his life, he changed his name to Devance. If you can shed any light on this Demoss fellow, I would be eternally grateful. breezer73@mchsi.com Pat Adkison

I'll check into this since I live here (Springfield), and I have friends that work there and I can track bills...but you do understand, that almost all states request fees of about 10.00... IL has been really good with the first 2 copies free, and never charging for copies of soundex and such ... St Louis Public Library charges for use of the equipment ... then fees... and it has one of the very best Lib in the US, as ALL the state census records are there and soundex too ,so you can follow your family around .. and they obits on line, now that cheap, 25 cents... ----- Original Message ----- From: "libby" <goosle@adams.net> To: <ILADAMS-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, February 19, 2003 7:42 PM Subject: [ILADAMS] Fw: [ILMacoupin] FW: New Proposed Fees for the State Archives > I am forwarding this from the Macoupin Co. web site; it's of interest to all > genealogists. > > ----- Original Message ----- > From: Pat Hansen <tom2pat@earthlink.net> > To: <ILMACOUP-L@rootsweb.com> > Sent: Wednesday, February 19, 2003 3:28 PM > Subject: [ILMacoupin] FW: New Proposed Fees for the State Archives > > > > I am forwarding this from the Cook County list, as it is about the fees > for > > copies. He was born in Adams Co., in 1838. His parents are unknown to me and I would like to find them. In the 1880 Census, he said his parents were born in Scotland (Father) and Ireland (Mother). In the 1920 Census, he states they were born in Pennsylvania. In 1861 Wm. married Sarah Zinn in Hancock Co., Il. They had two sons, Wm. Andrew and Matthew Sheridan before moving to Mo. in 1864. There is a possibility that William had two brothers, John, b.1844 and Joseph. Joseph married Mary Jane Rose in 1859 in Hancock Co. William and Sarah also had two sons named John and Joseph, who were born in Missouri. There were a total of 15 or 16 children born to the couple. Two of the girls were named Mary Ann and Josephine. Sarah's mother was named Mary Ann, so I wonder if William's mother or grandmother was named Josephine. There were other girls, but their names are unknown. Hope there is someone out there who has some clues to help find this family. Would appreciate any assistance. Thanks ==== ILADAMS Mailing List ==== Having trouble subscribing or unsubscribing?
