Hi All, Can anyone tell me rather or not there was a mental hospital in Adams county around 1881 and if not what did they do with the people who were declared insane? If there was such a place is it still in operation and what is their address? Thanks. Roberta Summers ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com.
I don't remember any in Adams County, but I believe that everyone used the mental hospital in Jacksonville, Ill. when it was needed. It is still in existence. He was born in Cherry Valley, Ill, June 25, 1865, a son of John and Hannah Marie Packard Brown, and had lived in Quincy since 1924. He was a member of the Methodist church and was married to Lillian J. Poppham, October 20, 1893, in Beloit, Wis. Surviving are the widow; a daughter, Mrs. Marvel McLaughlin of Quincy; a brother, John Brown of Cherry Valley; a grand-daughter, Mrs. Carl Strothoff of Quincy, and a great-grandson, Carlyle Strothoff, of Quincy. I had a hard time finding anything on Lillian Brown. I think the one you gave the date for, 9-16-1944, is not actually the one you want. I found the following obit in the 9-17-1944 edition of the Quincy paper: Miss Lilly Brown, 76, of Anna Brown home, died in the home Saturday morning, at 7:30 o'clock. She had been a resident of the home since July 1925. Miss Brown was born in Quincy, July 24, 1868, a daughter of David G and Mary Bywater Brown. A brother, Walter Brown, and a sister, Mary Emma McNally preceded her in death. In the next days paper, under the funeral announcements, I found: Funeral services for Miss Lillian Brown will be held Tueday afternoon at 2 o'clock in the Daugherty Memorial. Interment in Woodland cemetery. Friends invited. I just checked my cemetery books and Richard and Lillian Brown are buried at Greenmount Cemetery. Richard R. Brown is listed as 1865 - 1944 and Lillian J. Brown is listed as 1872 - 1949. I can see if I can find them when I'm in Quincy next week. I will let you know. Hi Julian. I have 6-8 photos for you. Their size is 670-700KB each, if you want i can cut that down for you in PhotoShop to about 100KB each. Or I can send you the originals and the resized. Just let me know what you'd like. Turns out the temple was a block away from the hospital and I'd gone over to take my Dad to a doctors appointment at the hospital, so it worked out well. I noticed as I drove away that there were stained glass windows towards the back of the structure, I didn't get a close-up of those, but I'm going back next week so I could get them then. I noticed that someone else has offered to get pix for you too. If their pictures are better, I would not be offended at all if you chose to use theirs. When I'm in Quincy I like to take pictures of the cemeteries around Adams County for a website called IL SAV'N GRAVES. I also like to do obituary lookups for people. I just like to help out. So, please don't feel like you have to use mine if someone elses are better. ! Be sure to let me know about the size. Thanks! Julian, The temple does indeed still exist. I seem to remember reading once upon a time that it's the oldest continually used temple in the state of Illinois. If you fail to receive a photo from anyone else, I'd be happy to take a few for you. Libby ----- Original Message ----- From: "Julian H. She retired Sunday evening about 9:30, having uttered no complaint as to her physical condition. She was at that hour in usual health, which at no time for years past had been bad. A young lady slept in the same bed, retiring an hour or so after Mrs. Hass did, and knew nothing as to the hour that death came. She was not aware of the death of Mrs. Hass until yesterday morning. The coroner was summoned and his jury returned a verdict that death resulted from heart disease. Death evidently came in a painless manner, as her features and general appearance indicated that her departure was without a struggle. The deceased was a native of Hanover Germany. She came to America forty-two years ago, and lived in St. Louis a number of years. She had long resided in Quincy, and twenty nine years ago she was wedded to Lambert Hass, and leaves two children- George Hass, of this city, and Mrs. Henry Raehling, of St. Louis.
