    3. Hi Bill, thanks for the response. Did I.O.O.F. actually provide housing for orphans? If so, have you any idea where? The reason I ask is that my ggrandparents are buried at I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Percy, IL and my grandmother and her brother and sister were all put in orphanages after their parents died. I'm trying to find the orphanage they were put in. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Bill Fox" <Bfox@NightOwl.Net> To: <IL-SOUTHERN-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, July 18, 2001 5:56 PM Subject: [IL-SOUTHERN] The straight scoop! : >From the home page of the I.O.O.F. : "Odd Fellowship became the 1st national fraternity to include both men and : women when it adopted the beautiful Rebekah Degree on September 20, 1851. : This degree is based on the teachings found in the Holy Bible, and was : written by the Honorable Schuyler Colfax who was Vice President of the : United States during the period 1868-1873. 3. Hi listers, just wanted to say thanks for the info. on the Perry County cemeteries. Another question popped up as I received a death cert. on my ggrandmother. I noticed she was buried in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Percy, IL. I believe it stands for Internal Order of Odd Fellows. I believe the cemetery is now called the Percy Cemetery. My question is what exactly is this organization? Did you have to belong to the organization in order to be buried there? It might help me to track down some other family members in Southern Illinois if there was such an organization seen as there are a few members buried in this cemetery. Any info. is always greatly appreciated. Dawn Harris Hunter - So. Illinois

    3. Dear Listers,In 1924 a cousin of my grandfathers wrote him a letter. His name was JOHN K McLENNAN from Neponset. He was then 46 years old and had two children EARL who was 23years old and Margaret who was 14 years old.His wifes grandfather had also come from Scotland. Purdoms and Wilsons were his wifes people and they owned the Purdom farm. There is a connection with a Buchanan family as well.John McLennan 's wife's name was BARBARA , if I am reading the letter correctly .and John's father married Margaret Turnbull. His aunts were all married and alive in 1924.Mrs MATHESON, MRS MCLENNAN,MRS BUCHANAN ,MRS FINLAYSONand MRS MCLEAN. I believe some of the family also lived in a place called KEWANEE. As I am now 75 years of age I would very much like to sort out our family tree before it is too late--so is there any kind person out there that can point me in the right direction. My grandfather is descended from Alexander McLENNAN and Mary Macrae in Kintail in Scotland. Regards and here is hoping!!! Maureen Finlayson.Orewa Hibiscus Coast. New Zealand.

    1. [IL-SOUTHERN] WEIDENMILLER / PANSHAW
    2. Sharon Haggerty
    3. I have been lurking on this list for a few weeks, and I guess it is time to post my Illinois query. One of the World Family Tree CDs has some info. on a Howard Panshaw (see chart at the end of this message). I believe Howard is a grandson of my gg grandfather, John Haggerty (1813-1902) and his second wife, Jane Smith (b. abt 1826). Jane's first husband was Joseph Dafoe. She and John married in 1864. I have been told that Jane had a grown daughter and I know that John had a number of children, the youngest only 3 years old. John and Jane's daughter Margaret Ann was born 18 Aug. 1865, by which Jane had left John and his children. Margaret was christened in Ontario in October 1866, but that is the last confirmed record we have of either Jane or Margaret. Family lore is that Jane and Margaret went to the USA where Margaret married a man named Panshaw and that she had three children: Mabel born 1866, Howard and Blanche (dates unknown). The name Panshaw is extraordinarily rare, so I think it is likely that the Howard on the FTM CD is the same Howard or at least a close relative. I would wecome any hints, tips or clues as to how I might try to find more info about this Panshaw family. I have done a fair bit of searching across the Internet, but this is the only record I have been able to find. 1. 3. Hi! I think Kucek is a unique enough name that any reference may be this family. Many parties in Illinois migrated to Kansas. When I taught school in Leavenworth, KS in 1972 and 1973 a Mr Kucek was the Superintendant. He hired me and signed my paychecks so I remember his name. After 2 yrs, I resigned. I heard his marriage broke up and he was going to teach in Thailand for a governmental agency. His records would still be there.
