Article Text: Hugh A. Hurt, 93, of Barry, died Tuesday Feb. 5, 2008, at Blessing Hospital in Quincy. He was born in Barry Jan. 23, 1915, to Leon J. and Mary Katherine Richards Hurt. He married Nadine Bogan Dec. 26, 1960 at the Barry Methodist Church. Hugh graduated from Barry High School and went on to receive a Bachelor of Agriculture Degree from the University of Illinois in 1937. Hugh was a decorated veteran, making the Army his career for over 17 years. He was at the Battle of the Bulge during the WW II, and earned over a dozen medals during his career including a Purple Heart, Bronze Star Medal and the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with 3 bronze service stars. Hugh was also a member of a special task force that tested the nitrogen bomb. After his long career in the Army, Hugh was a grain and livestock farmer on the home place near Barry. He was a charter member for John Wood Community College Board of Trustee's and served the board seven years. He was a 50 year Legion Member at the Barry American Legion Post 222, and a member of the Barry United Methodist Church. Survivors include his wife Nadine, of Barry; two sons, Randy (Jeane) Hurt of Barry and Doug Hurt of Columbia, Md.; three daughters, Lori Hurt of Pittsfield, Ann Defranceaux of Hallandale, Fla. and Linda Andrieux of Paris, France; 11 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren; and one brother Clay Hurt of Spanaway, Wash. Hugh was preceded by a son, Robert Hurt; a grandson, Michael Defranceaux; two brothers, Richard and William Hurt; and a sister Mary Lee Hurt. Graveside services were held Friday, Feb. 8 at 11 a.m. at the Park Lawn Cemetery in Barry with Dr. Greg Maize officiating. Military Rites were conducted by the Barry American Legion Post 222. There was no visitation or formal services; however, friends were invited to the graveside service. Memorials may be left to the Barry Fire Department or The Barry American Legion Post 222.
