Article Text: The Globe Democrat of last Saturday contained an item from Metropolis, Ill., referring to an elopement from that town in which it was asserted (referring to the lady's interview with her lover) that: This last act was the occasion of her dismissal as teacher of a class from the Christian Sunday-school. J. F. MCCARTHY, the Superintendent, demanded of her whether she did not get out of bed and visit LEDBETTER. She replied that she did not, which was literally true. MCCARTHY charged her with lying and humiliated her by dismissing her from the school. Mr. J. F. MCCARTHY, who is an attorney of standing at Metropolis, and President of the First National Bank, writes to say: "I am not now (19th inst.) nor have I been for five years past the Superintendent of the Sunday-school named. I did not dismiss the lady from a position of teacher in any Sunday-school. Nor was she dismissed by any one from such position for the cause alleged. No such demand was made upon her as is charged I made. I did not charge her with lying then nor at any other time. I did not, nor did any one, dismiss her from the Sunday-school, nor was she dismissed therefrom. Every reference to myself in your dispatch is absolutely and wholly false." ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ IL-Old-News ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NewspaperAbstracts.com - Finding our ancestors in the news!
