Recently, I read interesting information on an ARTER family web page that my 2G-Grandfather, Charles D. ARTER (son of Dr. Daniel D ARTER, my 3G-Grandfather) of Cairo, Alexander County, IL, was "assassinated" and died there on July 31, 1879. (Dr. ARTER, his father, died a week later.) According to a Cairo news article printed a couple of years earlier, Charles was a local lawman, though I do not know if he still held the position at the time of his death.
