Briggs Obituary Article Text: Published THE DAILY REGISTER-MIAL 25 MAR 1933 Galesburg, Knox County, Illinois Milton A. Briggs, C. B. and Q. switchman who died in St. Mary's hospital Friday night, expired from a ruptured broncus in his right lung, caused by an accident while at work, a coroner's jury reported to Dr. G. S. Bower, coroner, at an inquest in the Kimber and West mortuary Saturday afternoon. In its findings, the jury stated that Mr. Briggs jumped from the freight depot platform to the footboard of a locamotive standing still, and received a strain in his left side. After his death, Drs. E.B. Grogan and Croslar Bower conducted a post mortem examination, and found Mr. Briggs' right lung collapsed. Witnesses at the inquest were Robert W. Briggs, 501 Fifer street, a son; D.H. Cleary,481 East Third, engineer on the train; and Dr.Grogan. Testimony showed that Mr. Briggs received his injury when he leaped from the platform to line up drawbars on cars being coupled at the freight house. Mr. Briggs, familiarly known as "Jocko," was one of the best known railroad men in town. It was his duty to switch for the two evening trains arriving at 10 o'clock, and there was never a slip-up in his work. Skillfully he helped to make up the west-bound trains, and they were separated and started off in a few minutes. Funeral rites were held at 2 o'clock this afternoon from the Kimber and West chapel, in charge of the Rev. W. Harvey Young. David Swedenberg and Arvid Erlandson sang. Burial was in Memorial Park. Casket bearers were T.M. Killeen, Ed Mower, Frank Palm, J.F.
