Ruth, I just recently returned a book I had out on Interlibrary loan that listed many Chicago area German newspapers, including which libraries had holdings of them. Title: German-American Newspapers and Periodicals, 1732-1955. Quelle & Meyer Publishers, Heidelberg. I obtained it through FirstSearch, which you should be able to do through your local library. If you don't have success, I have copied all pages of Chicago area papers from that book and can help you. AFA finding a particular obit, that may be a difficult search (keep in mind also that not every death was recorded by an obit). Another possibility would be to search the PERSI holdings (available through AncestryPlus--available through many libraries) and also Ancestry's 'historical newspaper' holdings. Cyndi's list might also be a good place to continue your search with this [http://www.cyndislist.com/]; search under 'obits' or a specific locality. You might also try the U. S. Newspaper Project at: http://www.neh.gov/projects/usnp.html For your second request, the Chicago Historical Society should be able to help you with old newspapers. Reach them at: > Lesley Martin > Research Specialist > Chicago Historical Society > 312-799-2032 > [email protected] Lesley has been a great help to me with some of my research. Good luck with your search, and please let me know if you meet with success. Thanks to everyone who gave me such good ideas for finding an old obit. I'll visit my local library this week and get started. I realize it may not be found, but if I run across any neat "tricks" or ideas in my search, I'll share them with the list. Thanks again all you great people!
