He was born Nov. 20, 1923 in Pearl, to Homer Thomas and Verna Opal Renoud Boren. His family moved to Nebo when he was two weeks old. He graduated from Nebo High School in 1941, and attended Gem City Business College in Quincy He married Juanita Lucille "Skeet" McCann in Franklin. Ind. Aug. 19, 1944, and they became the parents of three sons, Michael Bruce, Phillip Mark and William Thomas. He served in the United States Army during World War II, serving 13 months overseas in the European Theatre. He served in combat with the 75th Infantry Division, including the Battle of the Bulge in December 1944 to January 1945. In 1946 he entered a partnership with his father Homer Boren in a grocery and locker plant business in Nebo. His oldest son Michael joined Boren and Son as a partner in 1972. In 1992 the business was sold, and Bruce Boren retired. Bruce was involved in numerous civic activities in Nebo and Pike County. He served as Fire Chief for many years, and was a member of the Nebo Fire Department from its inception in 1954 until 1997. He was on the Spring Creek Fire Protection District Beard from 1997 until 2005 and was a member of the Pleasant Hill Lions Club. He served on the Nebo Village Board, and as Mayor of Nebo, and later as Village Treasurer. He was Spring Creek Township Supervisor from 1959 to 1977, He served as president of the Nebo Community Club and as Commander of Nebo American Legion Post 223. He was active in the Nebo Church of Christ all of his life, serving as an elder for more than 45 years. He, along with various members of his family, and others, sang at scores of funerals through the years. He was a Boy Scout Troop committee member, a summer baseball coach and a Nebo booster in many ways. He was a member of the old 24-member Pike County Board from 1959 to 1972, serving as the last Chairman of that governing body. He was on the new nine-member County Board from 1972 to 1980, serving two years as chairman of that board, also. He served on the Illini Hospital Board, the Mental Health Board (708 Board), and as chairman of the Pike County Planning Commission. When people needed help, Bruce Boren provided it, and when Nebo and Pike County needed leadership, Bruce Boren provided that, also. His survivors include his sons Michael (wife, Julie) of Pittsfield, Mark of Nebo, and Bill (wife, Mona) of Quincy; a brother, Henry Boren of Chapel Hill, N.C. and a sister, Betty Foote of Tacoma, Wash.; six grandchildren, Jennifer (husband, Travis) Miller, Justin Boren, Angela Boren, Zachary Boren, Braxton Boron, and Spencer Boren; and three step great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his beloved wife of 63 years, and by four sisters, Vernice Franklin, Doris Branson, Lois Skillings and Bona Coultas. Funeral services will be held today, Wednesday, April 2 at 10:30 a.m. in the Nebo Church of Christ by Brother Earnest Johnson and Brother Wilson Ramsey. Burial will be in Greenpond Cemetery south of Milton. A meal will be served following at the Crossroads Center in Pittsfield. Visitation was held 4-7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Lummis Funeral Home in Pleasant Hill, and friends called one hour prior to services on Wednesday at the church. Memorials are to the Nebo Church of Christ, Nebo Community Club's "Save the Gym" fund and the Blessing Hospice of Pike County.
