Minnie was born Nov. 14, 1909, in New Canton. She was the fourth child of Charley and Lourie Bell Fusselman. She married Russell H. Hunter Aug. 19, 1931 in Hamilton. They enjoyed 70 years of marriage before his death July 1, 2001. They were the parents of three children, Charles Merill, who died in infancy, Barre E. (wife Venda) of Oak Grove, Mo. and Nancy "Dee" (husband Winifred) Lee of Barry. There are four grandchildren, Christopher Lee of Oak Grove, Katie (husband Chad) Hensley of Pensacola, Fla., Matt Hunter of Independence, Mo. and Doug (wife Mary Beth) Hunter of Blue Springs, Mo. Minnie graduated from hull High School and received her teaching certificate from WIU in 1931. She started her career in one room school houses teaching all eight grades. Her first positions were at Toll Gate, Blue Grass, Prairie 41 and teaching first and second grades in Plainville. She finished her 40-year teaching career at Barry Community Schools in the same first grade in that same classroom One of her grandsons discovered his grandmother's name on the bottom of his chair. After retiring from teaching, Minnie worked as a nurses assistant in Quincy for 11 years. She was an avid reader and loved teaching others to read, especially her grandchildren. She loved to travel, wrote poetry and collected key chains from all over the world. Her home was a favorite gathering place for friends and family. In addition to her children and grandchildren, she is survived by two sisters, Nellidene Howell of Hannibal, Mo. and Gretta Hazelrigg of Barry, as well as several loving nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, an infant son, a brother, Kenneth Fusselman; two sisters, Fern Hull and Lena Brown; and a special niece, Mary Smith. Minnie was a member of the Hannibal Community of Christ Church, Pike/Calhoun Retired Teachers, P.T.A., Elder Author's Club of Barry Community Care Center, a 60-year member of the American Legion Auxiliary, a lifetime member of the W.C.T.U. and Illinois Teacher's Association. Visitation was held Monday, march 24, from 12:30 to 2 p.m. at the Kirgan Funeral Home in Barry. Funeral services were held Monday, March 24 at 2 p.m. at the Kirgan Funeral Home in Barry. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery in Pittsfield.
