Article Text: Alfred (Al) H. Whittaker, 86, of Springfield, Mo., formerly of Pittsfield died Easter Sunday morning, March 23, 2008, at Christian Healthcare in Springfield, Mo. Al was born in Pittsfield on July 24, 1921, to Daniel and Clara Coultas Whittaker. He married Marie Doyle on August 4, 1943, in Pittsfield, and she is surviving. He served his country during World War II from 1942 to 1945 in the Army Air Force, his service being in the South Pacific, and received an honorable discharge on December 31, 1945. Al was a well-known resident of Pittsfield, working for Skelgas for more than 25 years. He was also a licensed plumber and heating and air conditioning contractor. Al was a loving member of Pittsfield Assembly of God, where he and his wife began attending in October, 1950. He served many years as a Deacon and spent countless hours volunteering his skills to help renovate, build and decorate the original church building located on West Adams Street. Al was an avid fisherman and loved to listen to music, read, work jigsaw puzzles and create gifts for family and friends with his woodworking tools. He also loved to tell a joke and make people laugh. Survivors also include his wife, Marie Whittaker, three children, Dennis (Nancy) Whittaker, of Tuscaloosa, Ala.; Debbie (Carl) Scranton, of Springfield, Mo.; and Beth (Dwight) McCleery, of Rushville, six grandchildren, Jason (Teri) Whittaker, of Benton, Ark.; Derek (fiancé Whitney) of Aurora, Ky., Ginger (Ben) Call, of Murray, Ky.; Heather Scranton, of Springfield, Mo.; Jarrod (Sarah) Scranton, of Springfield, Mo.; and Cameron McCleery, of Rushville, one great-grandson, Dennis Jackson Whittaker, of Benton, Ark.; and second great-grandson, Gideon Scranton, due to be born in May, 2008. He is also survived by two half-brothers, John Whittaker and Daniel Whittaker, a half-sister, Mary, and a step-brother, Glenn Christenson. He was preceded in death by his father and mother, and a sister, Florine Carr. Visitation for Al will be held Wednesday evening, March 26 from 5-7 p.m. at the Niebur Funeral Home, Pittsfield, with funeral services being held Thursday, March 27, at 10:30 a.m., at Pittsfield Assembly of God Church, with Rev. Quentin Beard officiating. Burial will be at the Oakwood Cemetery with military rites by Pittsfield American Legion Post #152. Memorials may be made to the Pittsfield Assembly of God, Pittsfield.
