Francis C. Article Text: Rev. Francis C. Scranton, 83, of Geneseo died Thursday, Feb. 28, 2008 at Hammond-Henry Hospital Extended Care Unit, Geneseo. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, March 3 at First Baptist Church, Geneseo. Rev. Joe Kobernat will officiate. Burial was in Oakwood Cemetery, Geneseo. Visitation was from 3 to 6 p.m. on Sunday at Stackhouse-Moore Funeral Services, 225 E. Park St. Geneseo. Memorials may be made to Rev. Francis Scranton Memorial Fund. Francis was born March 11, 1924 in Pike County, the son of Charles E. and Veda F. (Shaw) Scranton. He graduated from Perry High School in 1942. He married Mary Irene Jobe July 21, 1945 in Pittsfield. She survives. Rev. Scranton received his Bachelor of Theology from Northern Baptist Theological Seminary, Chicago. He then received Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education from Augustana College, Rock Island. Rev. Scranton went on to receive his Masters in Elementary Administration from Western Illinois University. The Scranton's moved to Geneseo in 1951 where he served as pastor of First Baptist Church for 16 years. He later served as pastor of Bethel Baptist Church, Port Byron for over 7 years. Rev. Scranton also began teaching at South School in Geneseo in 1954. During part of that time he also served as Principal. He then went to Southwest School, Geneseo where he taught 5th grade and served as assistant principal until he retired after 26 years of service due to difficulty with his vision. Rev. Scranton spent many years volunteering at Geneseo area nursing homes and at the Geneseo Historical Museum. Memberships include First Baptist Church, Geneseo and retired teachers association. ! He enjoyed gardening. Survivors include his wife, sons and daughters-in-law, Bruce and Judy Scranton, Franklin Springs, Ga., Philip and Donna Scranton, Corydon, Ind., Timothy and Nancy Scranton, Erie, and Joel Scranton, Colona; daughters and sons-in-law, Mary and Joe Vest, White House, Tenn., Veda and Dale Riewerts, Geneseo and Eula and Rob Lang, Lawrence, Kan; 24 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren; and a brother and sister-in-law, Arthur and Helen Scranton, Hersman.
