In the drilling a vein of coal between 23 and 25 inches in thickness was discovered which bears out the theory of many Knoxville residents of their being a large coal supply here. No estimation was made of the amount of coal that could be located in this particular location. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ IL-Old-News ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NewspaperAbstracts.com - Finding our ancestors in the news! Article Text: WAS IT SLAYER OF DAWSONS? (Galesburg Evening Mail) Oct 5, 1911 MYSTERIOUS STRANGER HAUNTS GARDNER HOME AFTER SUNDOWN FAMILY SURVIVORS ARE IN TERROR FEAR THAT FIEND WHO SLEW THREE AT MONMOUTH SEEKS LIVES OF OTHER MEMBERS OF FAMILY Members of the Gardner family who reside at Coldbrook township west of this city and who are related to the ill-fated Dawson family of Monmouth, were thrown into a state of terror last night by the actions of a strange man who prowled about their premises and was observed peering through the windows after sundown. It was reported that this prowler, who is thought by some to be the perpetrator of the fiendish crime at Monmouth, had turned and fired on members of the family when disturbed last night, but this report has not been verified. Mrs. Gardner is a daughter of the ill-fated couple who met their tragic death at the hands of an unknown assassin on Saturday night last and there has been a feeling among the surviving members of the family that the fiend had not completed his purpose and that their lives might be required to satiate the blood lust of the murderer. Statements have been made by the officials who are working on the case that members of the family are keeping back facts that might lead to the apprehension of the murderer because they are afraid their testimony would bring down the wrath of fiend upon their heads. The surviving members of the family are living, it is said, in a state of continual dread and horror, never knowing when the assassin may turn up and attempt their lives. The coroners jury convened this morning to hear further evidence, but although it spent the whole morning untangling the many rumors which have been afloat, was able to discover nothing that might throw any light on the case. The jury met again this afternoon and called everyone who had the least connection, with the case to the stand, but they were unable to sift out anything of importance from the mass of evidence submitted by the witnesses. The police officials are working on several clews but have not secured any definite evidence that might lead to an arrest at present. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ IL-Old-News ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NewspaperAbstracts.com - Finding our ancestors in the news! Article Text: WHO COMMITTED THE TRIPLE MURDERS? from the Galesburg Evening Mail October 4, 1911 Monmouth, Ill., Oct. 4--(Special to the Mail) -- There have been no developments here in the Dawson triple murder mystery that have offered (word unrecognized) sufficient to warrant an arrest and while several different rumours have gone out that an arrest has been made, there is no truth in them. The funeral was held yesterday and the inquest which was continued until after the funeral will be taken up again tomorrow. So far the weapon with which the crime was committed has not been found. Several more theories have been advanced regarding the cause of the crime. One theory advanced is that the triple murder may have been committed by the same person who committed a sextuple murder in Colorado Springs recently in which the identity of the murderer still remains a mystery. The theory is advanced that probably both crimes were committed by a madman who has a mania to commit murder and that he is traveling about the country carrying out his fiendish desires. In both instances the murders occurred in rather the poorer districts of the cities and under much the same circumstances. As was anticipated a crowd that could not be accommodated gathered at the Christian church Tuesday afternoon to attend the funeral services of the late Mr. and Mrs. William E. Dawson, and daughter Georgia. The tragic circumstances of their death and mystery surrounding the whole affair served to make the services an occasion of intense interest such as Monmouth has never before witnessed. When the Rev. D. M. Hughes commenced the services at 2 o'clock there was a tension in the atmosphere that could be distinctly felt and everyone present involuntarily paid tribute to the solomity of the occasion. The three caskets stood before the alter literally covered with floral offerings which expressed in but a feeble way the interest and sympathy felt by friends and the entire community. Seldom has any city been so stirred as our own during the past four days and the services have given the only opportunity for any tangible expression of the deep feeling engendered by the tragedy of Saturday night. The services were in charge of the Rev. D. E. Hughes, assisted by the Rev. C.J. Greene, pastor in charge of the First Presbyterian church where Mr. Dawson had served as janitor for a number of years. A quartet composed of the Misses Gail and Merle Hughes, F. T. Long and James Huff sang quite effectively "The Gates Ajar" "Asleep in Jesus" :Waiting By the River" and "Nearer My God To Thee." Mr. Huges chose his text the appropiate passage in the twenty-first chapter of the Book of Revelation and the twenty-fifth verse: "There shall be no night there." ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ IL-Old-News ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NewspaperAbstracts.com - Finding our ancestors in the news! Oct. 3. --(Special to the Mail). - After the funeral of William E. Dawson, wife and daughter, who were murdered in their beds Saturday night, by some unknown person, is held today, and the completion of the inquest begun yesterday, but continued until after the funeral, it is thought that some members of the family may be able to give some information that will lead to the possible identity of the murderer. The surviving members of the family are so prostrated with grief that they have not been able to collect their thoughts sufficiently to give a story that may help the authorities to run to earth the guilty party or parties. It is reported here that certain members of the family have strong suspicions toward a certain party whose name they are withholding for the present. One report is that when a messenger went to the home of Mrs. Guy L. Gardner near Coldbrook to tell her of the murder of her parents, Mrs. Gardner ran to her husband and throwing her arms about his neck, said: "_______ ____ ______ has killed my folks." It is said that this messenger did not distinguish the name mentioned by Mrs. Gardner. This rumour arises from a report that when Dawson was in the penitentiary charged with horse stealing that his friends applied for his release and since getting out Mr. Dawson has worked quietly to secure evidence that would connect another with the crime. It is reported that had had found information which if revealed would lead to the arrest of another party and that he was about ready to reveal this information. Because of the triple murder it is said that the other members of the family who knew of these details suspect that Dawson and the two members of the family were killed to close their mouths. It is also reported that other members of the family are fearful of their lives which is said to be one of the reasons for their holding back the information as is reported. The deepest relief is felt by residents of Monmouth over the fact that the blood hounds, which were used in an attempt to trace the murderer, followed a trail which led out of the city. The dogs in two trials followed the same trail to the outskirts of the city and then lost it. It is thought from this fact that the miscreant is not hiding anywhere in the city but has left the neighborhood. This fact has also done much to quiet the feeling which had been manifested by some of the more impetuous spirits of the city against the colored neighbors of the victims. IN COLORED DISTRICT The home of the Dawson family is situated in the colored district and the nearest neighbors of the Dawsons are colored people. When a rumor spread through the assembled mob which thronged about the Dawson home, that the little girl had been outraged there was danger that violence (continued on page six) I will get that particular ending also when I go back to the library next week or on Saturday. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ IL-Old-News ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NewspaperAbstracts.com - Finding our ancestors in the news!
