Article Text: Judy R. Franklin, 56, of Winchester died Monday, March 3, 2008, at Passavant Area Hospital. She was born Sept. 12, 1951 in Jacksonville to the late William C. and Edith M. Reynolds Franklin. Judy was a 1969 graduate of Winchester High School. She was an LPN and worked at the Jacksonville State Hospital for several years. She then worked for the Illinois Department of Corrections, retiring in 2002 as a Captain. She loved her grandchildren and also fishing. She was a member of Cornerstone Baptist Church in Winchester. Survivors include her three sons, William (wife Krissi) Banks of Barry, Timothy Banks of Jacksonville and Anthony (wife Jennifer) Banks of Columbus, Ind.; seven grandchildren, Claudia and Anthony Banks of Jacksonville, Ethan, Avery, William Banks of Barry, Mazie and Justin Banks of Jacksonville; two stepgrandchildren; a brother, James A. (wife Nancy) Franklin of Burlington, Iowa; three sisters, Barbara (husband Ron) Carter of Ft. Madison, Iowa, Linda (husband Tom) Paul of Winchester and Jane White of Winchester; several nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death were her parents and two brothers and one sister. Graveside services were held at 10 a.m. Thursday, March 6 at the Winchester City Cemetery. Visitation was held after 4 p.m. Wednesday March 5, 2008 at the Coonrod Funeral Home in Winchester where the family met with friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Memorial contributions can be made to the Cornerstone Baptist Church or to the family. She was born October 13, 1925 in Griggsville to the late Earl G. and Rada Bell Anders Shelton. She married George Milton Rumple June 18, 1945 in East Moline, and he preceded her in death Feb. 8, 1987. Surviving are triplet sons, Val Rumple and wife Julie Potter of Springfield, Van Rumple and wife Rita of Valley City and Vern Rumple and wife Carol of Swayze, Ind.; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one sister, Etta Sargent and husband Kenny of Pittsfield; a brother, Richard Shelton and wife Rokita of Pittsfield; and several nieces and nephews, including loving niece and caretaker, Brenda Gibbs of Pittsfield. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Earl Shelton, Jr., Homer Shelton, and Leroy Shelton; and a sister in infancy. Eileen attended the Griggsville Church of the Nazarene in Griggsville. She was a past employee of Trio Manufacturing and later Bergman Meat Packing Company until she retired after which she cleaned in and around the Griggsville area. She was known for her wonderful apple pies. She loved to cook for family gatherings, cleaning her home and in later years going fishing with George. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 9, at the Airsman-Hires Chapel in Griggsville. Burial was in Griggsville Cemetery. Visitation was held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday at the chapel. Memorials may be made to the Barry Community Care Center or to the Pike Co. Special Olympics. He served his country in the U. S. Navy. Virgil graduated from Liberty High School in 1967. He enjoyed nature and being out of doors. His special enjoyment was riding his Harley Davidson. Survivors include his father, Norvell Troxell of Baylis; two brothers, Roy Allen Troxell of Perry, Fla. and Ronnie Troxell, Sr. of Baylis; three nephews; and several great nieces and nephews. Article Text: Ruby O. Niebur, 91, of Pittsfield died Monday, March 3, 2008, at the Liberty Village in Pittsfield. She was the daughter of Albert R. and Julia Ogden Martin and she was born Jan. 24, 1917 in Honey Bend. Her first marriage was to Fred L. Dively and they were married Feb. 10, 1934 in Decatur and he preceded her March 3, 1980. She later married Phillip L. Niebur March 23, 1988 in the Chapel at the Pittsfield United Methodist Church. She worked at the Brown Shoe Company, Safe Way Grocery and Margaret's Flowers, all in Pittsfield. Ruby was a member of the Pittsfield United Methodist Church, Pittsfield Dance Club, O.E.S., American Legion Auxiliary Post 152, avid bridge player, United Methodist Women - Madonna Circle. She enjoyed traveling with her husband Phil. Her survivors include her husband, Phillip Niebur; four daughters, Mrs. Pattie (Anthony) Flora, Freehold, N. J.; Mrs. Rita Saathoff, Rochester, Mrs. Marsha Miller, Pittsfield and Mrs. Shelly (Mac) Arnold, Bloomington; ten grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded by her first husband, Fred Dively; a grandson, Tom Melton; two son-in-laws, James Saathoff and Robert Miller; a brother in-law, Dean Niebur and 12 brothers and sisters. Funeral services were held Saturday, March 8, at 11 a.m. at the Niebur Funeral Home in Pittsfield with Rev. Linda Peyla officiating. Burial was at the West Cemetery in Pittsfield. Lunch was served following the service at the United Methodist Church in Orr Hall. Visitation was held Friday, March 7 from 5 until 8 p.m. at the Niebur Funeral Home. Jean was born in Pittsfield Nov.11, 1945 to Donald and Mabel Josephine Cawthon Hull. She married John Logsdon Jan. 19, 1964 in Pearl and he survives. Jean was a lifelong Pike County resident and graduated as Salutatorian from Pittsfield High School. She worked as a supervisor for Cruttenden Orchards in Barry for more than 20 years, and she was a familiar face at the Barry Apple Festival, selling their apples every year. Jean enjoyed camping and spending time with her family and friends, and going to flea markets with her sister. Her life's work was that she took care of her kids and family, always treating everybody else better than she allowed herself to be treated. Survivors include John, her husband of 44 years; two sons, Jesse (wife Paula) Logsdon of Barry and Ron (wife Renata) Logsdon of Lockhart, Texas; two daughters, Cheryl (husband John) Webber of Davenport, Iowa and Della (husband Dean) Coleman of Barry; four grandchildren, Josh, Rebecca and Sarah Logsdon of Barry and Angel Mae Coleman of Barry; and one great-grandson, Landon Logsdon; four brothers, Earl and Butch Hull of Baylis, Bruce Hull of Savannah Tenn. and Oatha Hull of Barry; and five sisters, Patricia Baxter and Della Rush of New Salem, Ida Lawber of Barry, Jewel Warren of Tennessee, and Shelia DeVerger of Quincy. Jean was preceded by her parents and two brothers, Donald and Chuck Hull. Services were held Sunday, March 9 at 2 p.m. at the Niebur Funeral Chapel in Barry with Rev David and Pam Brown officiating. Visitation was held Saturday evening from 4 - 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial was at the Grey Cemetery near New Salem. A dinner was held for family and friends at the Barry American Legion Hall following the service. Memorials may be left to the St Louis Childrens Hospital. She was born September 7, 1917 in Jacksonville, the daughter of Russell and Ethel Tannahill Crawford. She married Eldon Riffey Dec. 23, 1935 and he preceded her in death in 1986. She is survived by two sons; Donald (wife, Sharon) of Wamego, KS, Darrell (wife, Elizabeth) of Baylis; one daughter Sharon Shannon of Beardstown, fourteen grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by two sons, James and John, a daughter, Ethel Mae, in infancy; a brother, Charles, and two sisters, Evelyne and Vivian. She retired after many years at Passavant Hospital Dietary Department. She loved to sew, embroider, and loved to travel. She played bingo, loved gospel music and going to church. She was a member of Franklin Baptist Church, and being baptized in 1932 was the oldest living member of the church. Funeral Services were 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 11, 2008 at Neece-Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in Waverly with Rev. Len Penny officiating. Rod Marlow played piano and sang "Peace in the Valley" and "Just a Closer Walk" Burial was in Waverly East Cemetery. Mrs. House was a graduate of Chillicothe Missouri Business College and then employed by the Belleville Illinois Farm Credit System as assistant secretary-treasurer. After her marriage she was employed by the Agricultural Stabilization Service of Pike County. Melvina was a member of the Pittsfield United Methodist Church, and a past member of the Pittsfield Women's Club, Old Orchard County Club, and the Pittsfield Pinochle Group. Having no children, the Pittsfield community became their child, and they were generous supporters of Illini Community Hospital, Pittsfield United Methodist Church, the Pittsfield Community Center and many other charitable organizations. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, March 6 at the Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in Pittsfield. Burial will be in Pittsfield West Cemetery. Terry was the son of Charles and M. Elizabeth (Herron) Wintjen, born July 14, 1947 in Maryville, Mo. He attended the Rock Port Schools, graduating in 1965. Upon graduation, he enlisted into the United States Navy and served his country for three years in the naval fighter squad, on the U.S.S. Saratoga, during the Vietnam War. July 2, 1970 he was united in marriage to Mary Roberta King at the United Methodist Church in Rock Port, Mo. Terry was employed with the Missouri State Highway Department in Rock Port, the World Aero Space Center in Quincy, and also as a heavy equipment operator for Continental Cement in Hannibal. Terry was a member of the First Christian Church, Pittsfield, Ralph Greer American Legion Post #49, Rock Port, and Pace International Union- Local 5-0205 also of Hannibal. He enjoyed traveling, camping, and taking nature walks, but he especially enjoyed the time spent with his grandsons. Survivors include his wife, Mary, of the home in Pittsfield; two sons, Kevin and his wife, Denise, Hannibal, Mo. and Darin and his wife Shelley, Griggsville; four grandsons, Austin, Dustin, D. J. and Stone Wintjen; his mother M. Elizabeth Wintjen, Rock Port, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Terry was preceded in death by his father, Charlie and one grandson, Chance Wintjen. Services were held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, March 4, at the First Lutheran Church, Rock Port. Interment followed at the Hunter Cemetery, Rock Port. The family received friends from 10 to 10:45 a.m. at the First Lutheran prior to the services. Memorials may be directed to the Hunter Cemetery, Rock Port. Military rites are under the auspices of Ralph Greer American Legion Post #49, Rock Port. Services are under the direction of Minter Funeral Chapel, Rock Port. He was born January 5, 1918 in Martinsburg to Joseph and Noma Kibler. Mr. Kibler served in the Army Air Corps during WWII and retired in 1986 from Acco Chain Conveyor Co. where he had worked for 42 years. He was a member of the Royal Oak Church of Christ and did volunteer work for the American Red Cross. Surviving are his wife, Hazel, whom he married in 1981; children, Richard J. (Jena LeLeux) Kibler of Gainesville, Fla. and Elizabeth A. (Steve) Gibson of Alton; sister, Norma J. Hoaglin of Pittsfield; grandchildren, Apryl Wilson, Hailey, Corey and Dylan Johnson, Nathan (Tammy) Kibler and Cristina and Brianne Kibler; step-grandchildren, Jennifer Hamberg and Patrick and Emilee Gibson and great grandsons, Brandon, Derek and Aiden. He was born July 4, 1926, at the home of his grandparents, Ed and Mary Niemeyer in East Hannibal to Paul and Mildred Niemeyer McMullen. He married Mary Collins in November of 1953 and she preceded him in 2005. After being discharged from the military in 1947 Mr. McMullen went on to farming and worked as a carpenter for Carpenter Local #189 in Quincy. He raised horses and cattle and enjoyed restoring his model 70 John Deere tractor. Dick was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Hannibal, Mo. and loved square dancing, blue grass music and watching westerns on TV. Survivors of his family include a daughter, Paula Elledge of Louisiana, Mo.; two grandsons; Michael McMullen of Warrenton, Mo. and Ryan Elledge, of St. Peters, Mo.; two great-grandsons, Dylan Elledge and Issac McMullen; a sister, Mary Riester of Belleville; two nieces, Teresa Barfield and Susan Riester; and two nephews, Tony McMullen and Dwayne Brown. He was preceded in death by a son, Donald W. "Mac" McMullen in 2007 and a brother, Robert McMullen. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Saturday, March 1, at Niebur Funeral Chapel in Barry with Rev. Patsy Kelly officiating. Visitation was from 4-8 PM, Friday at the funeral chapel. Francis was born March 11, 1924 in Pike County, the son of Charles E. and Veda F. (Shaw) Scranton. He graduated from Perry High School in 1942. He married Mary Irene Jobe July 21, 1945 in Pittsfield. She survives. Rev. Scranton received his Bachelor of Theology from Northern Baptist Theological Seminary, Chicago. He then received Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education from Augustana College, Rock Island. Rev. Scranton went on to receive his Masters in Elementary Administration from Western Illinois University. The Scranton's moved to Geneseo in 1951 where he served as pastor of First Baptist Church for 16 years. He later served as pastor of Bethel Baptist Church, Port Byron for over 7 years. Rev. Scranton also began teaching at South School in Geneseo in 1954. During part of that time he also served as Principal. He then went to Southwest School, Geneseo where he taught 5th grade and served as assistant principal until he retired after 26 years of service due to difficulty with his vision. Rev. Scranton spent many years volunteering at Geneseo area nursing homes and at the Geneseo Historical Museum. Memberships include First Baptist Church, Geneseo and retired teachers association. ! He enjoyed gardening. Mrs. Hoos was born Jan. 29, 1914, in Edgewater Park, N. J., the only child of the late Charles A and Matilda Christie Nixon. She attended school in Burlington, N.J., and then moved to Pittsfield and graduated from Pittsfield High School in 1931. She married G. Earl Hoos Aug. 13, 1932. For most of their married life, they lived on a farm northwest of Pittsfield in the Sunnyhill neighborhood. When Mr. Hoos retired, they moved to 306 East Washington in Pittsfield. He passed away in their home Aug. 11, 1988. Mrs. Hoos was one of the first patients in Illini Community Hospital and then became a volunteer there for many years. She enjoyed playing the piano, doing needlework, and spending time with friends and her neighboring children. She was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Quincy. Survivors include her cousin, Dr. Elizabeth Koppel of Hendersonville, N. C.; great nieces, Jeanna Rhoulhac of West Hollywood, Fla. and Teresa Easley of Nevada; great nephew, James Duerr of California; three great-great nephews, Anthony Fortes, and Darren and Gregory Rhoulhac of Florida; and her neighbors since 1975, Ray and Judy Davenport and their children, Kami, Karin, Christopher, Craig, and Creighton. Mrs. Hoos was preceded in death by her parents and her husband. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Sunday, March 2, at the Niebur Funeral Home in Pittsfield. Burial was in Pittsfield West Cemetery. Visitation was held one hour prior to services on Sunday at the funeral home. She was preceded by brothers, Jim Jordan, John Jordan, Richard Jordan and Tom Jordan; twin brothers, Walter Jordan and Paul Jordan (infancy); sisters, Agnes Lamphear, Margaret Jordan, Mary Ochs and Genny Godar. Funeral services were held Saturday, March 1 at 10 a.m. at the St. Mary's Catholic Church, Pittsfield with Fr. Rodney Schwartz officiating. Burial was at the Calvary Cemetery, Pittsfield. She was a 74-year member of the Pittsfield First Christian Church in Pittsfield and a member of the Priscilla group at the church. She was a member of chapter CD P.E.O., Parentals Club, over a 50-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star, and member the Pittsfield Book Club. She loved painting ceramics, caring for flowers, playing bridge, and attended sporting events involving grandchildren. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 1, at the Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in Pittsfield. Burial was in Pittsfield West Cemetery. Visitation was held one hour prior to services Saturday at the funeral home. Gregory After an illness of about three we Mr. Richard M. Gregory died at his dence in this city, on the 23d inst. ing a wife and five children. H. Becraft of Roodhouse, formerly of this city, died on the 23d inst. Petefish, president of the Centennial Bank and mayor of Virginia, died on Sunday morning, after prolonged illness of dropsy. He was a prominent Odd Fellow and member of the A.O.U.W. He was an uncle of Dr. W. F. Short of this city. The funeral services occurred on the afternoon of the 25th, and were largely attended by friends from this city. Death of Wm. G. Johnson After protracted illness Mr. Wm. G. Johnson, the venerable father of Mr. Robert C. Johnson, died at his residence in this city, on the 21st inst., aged 76 years. Deceased in early life was a printer, but removed from Lexington, Ky., his birthplace, to this city in 1831, and for many years engaged in merchantile pursuits. His first wife was a sister of the late Joseph and M.H. Cassell, and his surviving wife is a sister of Messrs. Benj. and John Pyatt. Sudden Death of Mrs. Bardsley. Though having been ill for several weeks past and supposed to be recovering, the wife of Mr. George Bardsley, died suddenly on the afternoon of the 22d inst. After services by Father Hickey, largely attended at the Catholic church on the afternoon of the 23d. the remains were conveyed to the Catholic cemetery for interment. Deweese of Milton, Kentucky, were united in marriage at the home of the bride, near Alexander, on the 5th inst. Among those present from the city were Dr. W.F. Short, Misses Kate and Maie Short, Rev. Horace Reed, R.M. Hockenhull and wife, D.W. Simmons and wife and Miss Dora Simmons, S.D. Osbourne, F.W. Baker and others. The newly wedded couple departed the same evening for their future home near Milton, Ky. The bride has made many friends in this city who will send after her many wishes for her future happiness.
