Article Text: Metropolis, Ill., April 15. Mrs. Mamie MCFARLAND, daughter of Thomas M. RICHMOND, of Metropolis, Ill., eloped on last Thursday, with Henry LEDBETTER, a married man, aged 25 years. For over a year LEDBETTER has been paying marked attention to Mrs. MCFARLAND, and, it is alleged, occasioned a separation between her and her husband. Mrs. MCFARLAND returned to her father's house, and was welcomed to the paternal roof, where all went well until last Christmas, when LEDBETTER, who lived in Kentucky, visited Metropolis and sought an interview with Mrs. MCFARLAND. Mr. RICHMOND, the father, refused to permit the interview until informed by his daughter that it would be a final interview, and then in company with her brother she visited him at the hotel. This last act was the occasion of her dismissal as teacher of a class from the Christian Sunday-school. J. F. MCCARTHY, the Superintendent, demanded of her whether she did not get out of bed and visit LEDBETTER. She replied that! she did not, which was literally true. MCCARTHY charged her with lying and humiliated her by dismissing her from the school. After this she became desperate and kept up a correspondence with LEDBETTER, which terminated in the elopement. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ IL-Old-News ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NewspaperAbstracts.com - Finding our ancestors in the news! They found BARNARD and drew their revolvers, but BARNARD was too quick for EVANS, the spokesman, and sent a ball crashing through his mouth. It was a fearful fall from the top of one of these tall poles to the stone street and the wonder is that he was not killed. The wounded man was carried to Mr. Seavey’s home and Dr. Burtt attended to his injuries. The doctor found that one of Charles’ arms was broken, his head and face badly cut and bruised, and his body inured about the hips. None of the wounds are fatal but he is very badly hurt. However the injured man was able to be taken to the home of Arden Sherwood, Thursday morning, where his mother and others are giving him the best of care. It will be several days or maybe months before Charles will be able to climb telephone poles again. Mr Seavey could not tell just how the accident happened! but he spoke highly of Charles as a competent workman. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ IL-Old-News ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NewspaperAbstracts.com - Finding our ancestors in the news! Page-4 Article Text: The Washington Times August 13, 1903 Postoffice Arch. Page-4 CHICAGO POSTOFFICE ARCHITECT REMOVED Secretary Shaw Dissatisfied With Progress. SIX YEARS SINCE STARTED Assistant Foreman and Construction Expert Also Resign - Not Explained by Slow Work. By order of the Secretary of the Treasury, Henry Ives COBB, special architect for the Chicago postoffice, was removed from office yesterday. No reason is assigned for his dismissal, but it is said the action of the Secretary resulted from a charge of lax administration on the part of Mr. COBB. At the same time announcement was made at the treasury of the resignation of F. W. FITZPATRICK, foreman at the new building, and C. A. ECKSTROM, employed as an expert in construction work. These resignations were without solicitation by the department, and Treasury officials declare neither knew of the contemplated removal of Mr. COBB. Demand for Mr. COBB's resignation has been under consideration by Secretary SHAW for some time. Mr. COBB has been without actual authority for some months, and all his recommendations have been passed upon by the Supervising Architect after independent examination of the merits. Little progress Made. From a trustworthy authority it was learned that the dismissal of the architect was prompted through his failure to give satisfaction in the office. The work of the building has now been carried on for six years,, and even the most hurried construction would not permit the completion of the building in less than two years. Mr. COBB was appointed to the position of special architect under the competitive system. He received a salary of $4,500 a year. It is not likely that a successor to the discharged architect will be appointed. The building will probbably [sic.] be completed under the direction of the Supervising Architect. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ IL-Old-News ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NewspaperAbstracts.com - Finding our ancestors in the news!
