He was born Jan. 19, 1931 in Hillview, son of Walter Monroe and Harriett Sorrells Stewart. He married Lavina Cummings in 1971 at Alton and she preceded him in death in May of 1995. He had four children from a previous marriage, Johnny Wayne (wife Lois ) Stewart and Judy Ann (husband Lawrence) Lane, both of Pearl, Anna Mae (husband Ray) Weaver of Springfield, and a daughter who preceded him in death, Loveda Holly. Also surviving is his step-mother, Ethel Mae Stewart of Milton, grandchildren; J.W. Stewart, Tim and Ben Brecker, Christopher and Leanna Telkamp, Amy and Theresa Holly, and a sister Freida June (husband Wesley) Lewis of Alton. He was preceded in death by sisters Virginia Stepp, Leota Shank, and Norma Johnson. Mr. Stewart was a truck driver for Trans Petrol Trucking in Madison County for many years. He loved fishing, camping, and country music, and was an accomplished pool player, winning many trophies through the years. Funeral services were held 2 p.m. Thursday, July 3, 2008 at Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in White Hall with burial in White Hall Cemetery. Visitation was from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. HE was a graduate of Brown's Business College of Peoria and was a past member of Knights of Columbus. He was born Oct. 15, 1914 to Ruth Borrowman Ramsey and Larkin Ramsey near Bellview. Sept. 26, 1940 he married Faye Maxine Waggoner in Palmyra, Mo. and they were married almost 62 years. During WWII Lafe worked for the Western Cartridge Co. in East Alton. He spent most of his life working in the timber business and worked for Hiram Walker buying white oak trees before retirement. Lafe was blessed with a keen memory. He enjoyed visiting with family and friends and he always had a new story to tell. He loved watching sporting events and remained well informed about the players, as well as, their families and interests. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; and a brother, Russell Thiele. Mr. Thiele was a graduate of Chambersburg High School in Chambersburg, Il. He was a past employee of Brown Shoe Factory in Pittsfield, Il. for over 30 years. He also farmed his parent’s farm in Brown County, Il. for a few years before retirement. Mrs. Geisendorfer was of the Methodist faith. She graduated from Barry High School. She worked at Brown Shoe Company in Pittsfield, IL, owned and operated the Rainbow Café with her husband in Pittsfield for 18 years, and was a clerk at the Supervisor of Assessments Office in the Pike County Courthouse from 1966-1988. She enjoyed quilting, needle pointing, flower gardening and reading. She made great homemade noodles. She especially enjoyed her granddaughters’ school events. Leta was born in rural Calhoun County Nov. 29, 1922. She married Willie Joel Belt May 6, 1944, in St. Louis. They were married for 52 years. Together they raised five children, William "Bill" (Debbie) Belt of Pittsfield, Sharron (Gary) Ray of Rosewood Heights, Jan (Dick) Goodwin of Alton, Shirley (George) Long of Brighton and Cathy (Dale) Wiser of Lincoln; seven grandchildren, Troy (Julie) Arnoldi, Carrie Ray-Hill (Mike) Hill, Sarah (Mike) Cosimi, David Long, Tim Wiser, Rhonda Webel, Miranda (Brandon) Gerard. She was also blessed to have four great-grandchildren, Addison Arnoldi, Molly Gerard, Brooke and Brandon Beckerdite. Leta loved time with her large and loving family. As a part of the Greatest Generation, Leta worked at Western Cartridge in East Alton and at the Navy Torpedo Factory of Newport, R.I. throughout the war years. She was involved with Madison County Home Extension, NARFE and was a member of T.O.P.S. Leta spent countless happy hours in her flower gardens, as well as crafting and needlework. She is survived by three sisters and three brothers, Wilma Rodhouse, Bob Webb, Elby Webb, Marie Carroll, Jimmy Webb, Sandra Heimer; four stepsiblings, Thelma Spencer, Geraldine Hawkins, Miles and Leonard McBride; and by many nieces and nephews. Leta was preceded in death by her mother Freda (Thomas) McBride, father Lacey Webb, stepfather Louis "Mac" McBride, her husband, and two sisters, Juanita Vetter and Wanda Herron. Visitation was held from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, June 20, at Gray Funeral Home in Wood River, where services were at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, June 21. Burial was at Rose Lawn Memory Gardens in Bethalto. Article Text: George R. Lindsey Sr. 82, of Winchester passed away early Monday morning June 30, 2008, at Illini Community Hospital in Pittsfield. He was born December 25, 1925 near Detroit, IL the son of Charles Franklin and Margaret Agnes Dormandy Lindsay. He married Audra I. Bettis September 21, 1944 in Benton, Arkansas. Mr. Lindsey attended Tollgate country school. During World War 2 he served in the US Army as a Military Policeman. He was involved in the battle of Ardennes, Rhineland, and Central Europe, where he was wounded and received the Purple Heart. He worked for IREC for 38 years retiring as the Manager of Member Services in 1988. He was a member of Winchester American Legion having served as Commander; He was involved with the Kiwanis Club, Moose Lodge. He was always will to assist with the annual Burgoo and other community activities. He was a member of St. Marks Church. Surviving is his wife Audra at home, 6 daughters Rosann Lindsey of Winchester, Sharon Kay Porter of Decatu! r, Sue Lindsey of Baylis, Patricia (husband Robb) Layman, of Elkhart, Gloria Brown of Winchester, and Kathy (husband Vern) Pascal of Bluffs, a son George Lindsey Jr. of Winchester, 17 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren a brother Lindell Lindsay of Pittsfield and his beloved dog “Annie” also survive. Preceding him in death were 2 brothers Charles and Chester, and 4 sisters Emmitt, Frances, Ellen, and Ann. Funeral Services will be held at 10 am Thursday July 3, 2008 at the Coonrod Funeral Home in Winchester. Burial will be in Winchester City Cemetery were military rites will be conducted. Friends may call after 4 PM Wednesday at the funeral home where the family will meet with friends from 6 until 8 PM. With a Rosary service at 5:30 PM. Memorial contributions can be made to the American Cancer Society or the Winchester EMS. ( Babe ) Article Text: Lewis A. ( Babe ) Oitker, 82, of Barry died Thursday June 19,2008,in the Barry Community Care Center. He was born Sept. 20, 1925 in Barry to Otis and Ina ( Woosley ) Oitker. Babe graduated from Barry High School in 1943. He joined the Air Force in January of 1944 and was stationed at Biloxi, Ms.. After training, he was sent to Europe as a Tail Gunner in a B-25 with the 12th Air Force in Italy, with his service ending in May 1946. He later worked at Canton Auto Supply in Canton Mo. from 1952 until 1960, then operated Lew's 66 Service in Canton until July 1963. In March 1964 he joined Dohrn Transfer Company as an over the road truck driver, later driving for Hall's until he retired in September 1985. He always enjoyed taking vacations with his family. April 15, 1956 he married Laveta Blacketter in Barry, she survives in Barry. Babe and Laveta were blessed with a daughter, Debra, and her husband, Rod Hyer, of Camp Point. He is also survived by a brother, Richard ( Ike ) Oitker, and a sister, Myrtle Hart, both of Barry. He was preceded in death by a brother Clifford ( Bud ) Oitker. Funeral services were held Monday June 23 at 10 a.m. in the Kirgan Funeral Home in Barry. Visitation was from 3 til 6 p.m. Sunday June 22 in the Funeral Home. Burial was in Park Lawn Cemetery in Barry with graveside Military Rites by Barry American Legion #222 . Mr. Riley was born Dec. 28, 1923, in Woodstock to Matthew and Lena Rossman Riley. He married Marjorie Webel July 21, 1945 in Woodstock. She survives. Survivors also include two sons, John Patrick of Naperville and Kerry Mark of Champaign; one daughter, Colleen Riley O'Kane of St. Louis, Mo.; and two grandchildren, John Patrick Riley Jr. (JP) and Dylan James Riley. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Raymond and Harold; and a sister, Helen. Mr. Riley was a Navy pilot for 27 years and served in both World War II and the Korean War. During his military service, Mr. Riley was awarded the Air Medal with Gold Star, Navy Commendation Medal, Victory Medal WW II, Navy Occupation Service Medal - Pacific, China Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Korean Service Medal, UN Service Medal and Meritorious Service Medal. He also received a B.S. and M.A. from USC, M.A. from University of Michigan, and PhD from University of Illinois. He later worked for the University of Illinois for 16 years. He was an active member of St. Matthews Church. Funeral services were at 10 a.m. Friday, June 20, at St. Matthew Catholic Church, 1303 Lincolnshire Dr., Champaign. Fr. Mark Merdian officiated. Visitation was held Thursday, June 19 from 5 - 7 p.m. at Owens Funeral Home, 101 N. Elm St., Champaign, preceded by a rosary prayer service from 4:30 - 5 p.m. A local visitation was at the Airsman-Hires Chapel in Griggsville. from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, June 20, with graveside services at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 21, at Hebron Cemetery in Brown County. Graveside military rites were conducted by a U.S. Navy Burial Honor Detail. Funeral Services were held at 3 p.m., Sunday, June 22, at the Hilligoss Shrader Funeral Home, 705 South Main St., Tuscola, with Rev. Kenneth Roedder officiating. Visitation was held from 1 to 3 p.m., Sunday, at the funeral home. Burial was in Tuscola Township Cemetery with military graveside rites accorded. Mr. Peecher was born Jan. 14, 1919 in Atlas to James and Rena Howland Peecher. He married Lenora G. Oliver in Shelbyville, Ky. Sept. 8, 1945. In 1953, he was preceded in death by their daughter: Pamela, five years of age. He is also preceded in death by his Sisters: Olive and Elizabeth and his Brothers: Fred, Walter and Maurice. Surviving are his wife and daughters, Adella Sefrhans and William of Cherry Valley, Cynthia Baer and Greg of Tuscola; Cynthia's sons, Brandon T. Lust of Tuscola and Charles T. Lust and his wife, Shelly, of Collinsville; and a great-gr! andson, Thomas Oliver Lust. He is also survived by his sister, Lola Peecher of Tuscola and brothers, Donald Peecher of Tuscola and Lawrence Peecher of Redmond, Wash. Mr. Peecher was a U.S. Army Veteran, who served at Guadalcanal and other stations in the Pacific Theatre. Sgt. Peecher met his wife, Pfc. Lenora Oliver, at Fort Knox, Ky., where she was stationed on active duty in the U.S. Women's Army Corps. After being discharged, Edwin and Lenora lived in Louisiana, Mo., where he worked for Stark Brothers Nursery for 5 years until he found a job at the Bureau of Mines as an operator making gas from coal. After the closing of that plant, he was one of the first operating engineers hired at the National Petro Chemical Company in Tuscola. He moved his family from Missouri to Arcola in 1954 and has resided in Tuscola since 1957. He retired from Quantum in 1982 and since then devoted his time to his greatest loves, his family, especially taking his grandsons fishing in Minneso! ta. He was an avid college basketball fan and a dedicated gardener.
