Is there any other way, other than the Illinois Archives, to get a newspaper for 1903 for Ashland, Illinois? Any help, please.
Recently, I read interesting information on an ARTER family web page that my 2G-Grandfather, Charles D. ARTER (son of Dr. Daniel D ARTER, my 3G-Grandfather) of Cairo, Alexander County, IL, was "assassinated" and died there on July 31, 1879. (Dr. ARTER, his father, died a week later.) According to a Cairo news article printed a couple of years earlier, Charles was a local lawman, though I do not know if he still held the position at the time of his death. I would greatly appreciate a transcription of any newspaper report that would verify the manner of Charles' death. Thank you. Sue Mullins Northridge, CA [email protected]
Trying to find out how to get access to old newspapers for Mason County, Illinois. Any information would be helpful. [email protected]
I am seeking information on the death and probate of Cornelius Bassett b 1790 in Mass. Moved to New York as a child. Served in the Ny Assembaly 1837-1838. He is in the 1840 Delaware Co NY Census, then in the 1850 and 1860 Ogle Co Ill. His death is supposed to be in 1864, in Westchester Co. NY, but I can't find any information in any cemeteries there. Where is this illusive, Cornelius? I am trying to prove that he had a daughter Joanna. I have the obituary for a daughter Prudence, who died in Ogle Co. Marita

I am re-sending my earlier posting regarding my search for an obituary for Charles D. ARTER, because I have just learned the exact date of his death: July 30, 1879. I am also seeking an obituary for Dr. Daniel D. ARTER, who died August 6, 1879. Both men are buried in Cairo City Cemetery, which is located in Pulaski County, IL. Many thanks to anyone who might be able to help me with these two ARTER obituaries. I am searching for information about Miner D(aniel) Blackman and his wife, Sarah Daphne Beebe, and family who resided in Mattoon at least between 1877 ( son Roy Beebe Blackman, my grandfather, was born Nov. 16, 1877) and ab. 1885, when they purportedly went West to California by train. Miner is listed in the 1880 Federal Census as a hardware dealer; if this is true, perhaps there would also be ads from him in the local paper? To date I have been unable to ascertain what newspaper(s) may have been in existence at the time that would have covered that area. I have not located any birth certificates or baptismal records. Birth registry was not required before 1878 and there does not appear to be a "delayed birth" record. I do not know what church they attended and have misplaced one suggestion sent to me years ago, by the Historical Society, I believe. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. I am looking for any information on the family during this time period (and possibly at bit earlier) - birth announcement for Roy, ads from the business, socials, or mention of their departure from Mattoon. All, Can SKS double check the genealogy info I've compiled in reviewing the RATHJE family in the Village of Peotone, Will County, Illinois: I note that (possibly) Frederick, Sr., Frederick, wife, Lotta (Narges), 2d wife Marguetha (Fink), Frederick & Lotta's kids Henry, Louis, Sophia, & offspring w/ Marguetha, Clara & Lydia, all attended Peotone's Lutheran (later Evangelical & Reformed) Church, ca 1864 thru __? Also attending Peotone's Lutheran Church were Henry & his wives, 1st Willhelmina (Luhman), & children, Edward, Anna, Walter & Herman, & 2d Catherine (Koenecke), & their offspring, Emma, Otto, Paul, Ester. Is this data correct according to your research? I didn't find any mention of the Lutheran, or Evangelical & Reformed Church, which I believe was the 1st or 2d church built in Peotone ca 1859. Do you know where it was, when the name was changed to Evangelical & Reformed? Many Thanx for your help, & we have to get together this spring, Wally God Bless America Walter (Joan) X. McElligott P. Looking for newspaper articles written in Central Illinois (possibly in Champaign County) entitled "A Rough Rider's Narrative" by F.M. McArty - possibly in late 1898, 1899 or even 1900. I have some of the articles but they were written in serial form (either daily or weekly) and I'm missing some. There is no clue on either side as to the newspaper they were clipped from. Any suggestions or help would be appreciated. This is my Grandfather and I'd like to complete the transcription of his story for my children & grandchildren. Thanks, Judy Forte Brown, Lebanon, MO
