The actual page to the webfeed is at: http://www.newspaperabstracts.com/cgi-bin/artman/exec/syndicate.cgi At this time, the category list gives the option of state categories as well as counties. Please do NOT choose a state. No articles are actually listed in the state category, only counties, and I have not been able to fix the script yet to remove the state choices. So many things that have to be done to maintain a site, yet not enough hours in the day to get it all done! Have a wonderful evening! Barbara

I would like to thank all who contacted me both thru the list and privately. Please forgive me for not responding back to everyone who wrote providing their encouragement and support. I received so many wonderful messages that my inbox was overflowing. Know that your messages were read and greatly appreciated. Good news! The Newspaper Abstracts web site is back up and running properly with the exception of a few small areas. All will be even better than before by the end of August. Many articles that have been submitted in the past few months will also be added in the coming days and we will easily top 12,000 news articles on the site. We are also seeking volunteers to coordinate a county and / or state. You must know how to make web pages and upload them to the site. Anyone interested in helping on this wonderful project is encouraged to apply at: http://www.newspaperabstracts.com/volunteer.html If you can't build web pages or simply don't have the time to coordinate a county or state, you can still help the project by submitting your news items dated prior to 1931. News items can be submitted thru the mail lists or with our online forms at: http://www.newspaperabstracts.com/submitarticles.html Again, thank you for your support and have a wonderful week! Glad you are back. Ciao, Carole "LeMigliori Vi site sono le piu' brevi" The best visits are brief
First I must apologize for not being available over the summer as I should have been. This was a bad summer for me and my family and I was not available as I should have been. I keep hearing that people called but I didn't get any calls and we do answer our phone - the number is the same as it has been for over 15 years. The summer kicked off with debit card fraud and the ensuing battle with my bank, progressed to my mother-in-law being hospitalized for heart problems in June while my father-in-law was in the final stages of his 8 year battle with cancer, and finally losing that battle in July. Throw into this mess with the need for remodeling on the house to bring our utility bills under control, accepting a permanent position outside of the home and adjusting to a 40+ hour work week out of the home, the kids home on summer vacation, etc. Sometime during all of this, my computer was down again for about 2 weeks. Toss in the normal daily family life events and surely you can agree that my time has been rather limited this summer. By giving several of the coordinators access to everything needed to manage the site and mail lists in my absence, it never occurred to me that there would be such an episode over my not being available as long as I kept paying the bills, which I did. There were so many other more urgent family matters that deserved my attention that I didn't even think to notify anyone. How many of you would think to notify me when you are going to be gone for a few weeks or months? As the site owner, it should have occurred to me to email someone, but it didn't. Therefore, my fault, yes, but after all, how often does anyone really need me for something related to the site? I am about as frustrated, dissappointed, and upset as anyone can be over what has happened to the site. I took the day off of work today and am working on fixing the site, though it will take me more than one day to repair the site damage caused by a small few who decided to tear it down. Regardless of who stays or goes, the site and old-news lists will continue and will grow. I began this site in 1999 and I along with hundreds of volunteers, have worked too hard for it to go away. Those that wish to stay are more than welcome and those that wish to go may do so. If you know how to build web pages and wish to coordinate a county or state, email me privately and we can get you all set up. Finally, some of the things that have been said about me on some of the old-news lists the past few weeks are completely inappropriate and uncalled for and I just ask that those making those comments about my abandoning the site, that I don't pay the bills related to the site, urging list members to not submit news items, and other negative comments I have run across, cease with the gossip and quietly go their own way. Have a wonderful day, Barbara (Saxbury) Freeman http://NewspaperAbstracts.com Finding our ancestors in the news! http://www.PikeCoILGenWeb.org Pike Co ILGenWeb http://Saxbury.net Saxbury Family History
Thanks to everyone who gave me such good ideas for finding an old obit. I'll visit my local library this week and get started. I realize it may not be found, but if I run across any neat "tricks" or ideas in my search, I'll share them with the list. Thanks again all you great people! Ruth, I just recently returned a book I had out on Interlibrary loan that listed many Chicago area German newspapers, including which libraries had holdings of them. Title: German-American Newspapers and Periodicals, 1732-1955. Quelle & Meyer Publishers, Heidelberg. I obtained it through FirstSearch, which you should be able to do through your local library. If you don't have success, I have copied all pages of Chicago area papers from that book and can help you. AFA finding a particular obit, that may be a difficult search (keep in mind also that not every death was recorded by an obit). Another possibility would be to search the PERSI holdings (available through AncestryPlus--available through many libraries) and also Ancestry's 'historical newspaper' holdings. Cyndi's list might also be a good place to continue your search with this [http://www.cyndislist.com/]; search under 'obits' or a specific locality. You might also try the U. S. Newspaper Project at: http://www.neh.gov/projects/usnp.html For your second request, the Chicago Historical Society should be able to help you with old newspapers. Reach them at: > Lesley Martin > Research Specialist > Chicago Historical Society > 312-799-2032 > [email protected] Lesley has been a great help to me with some of my research. Good luck with your search, and please let me know if you meet with success. Ruth, The Chicago Historical Society Research Library carries the Abendpost (German) Newspaper. I was able to get an obit their for 1907. You might want to check with them on the years they have. The only library (that I know of) to get old Chicago newspapers is the Harold Washington Library, downtown Chicago. It is worth the trip, as they have so many papers to choose from. Good luck, Mary Lou Woods
Does anyone know of a German newspaper that might have carried an obit of a native German in 1891? She died in Chicago, Cook County ( 711 Seminary) in March of 1891. Also, does anyone know of a library near Wheaton, Illinois that might have microfilm of the Chicago Tribune from that year? (I know the Wheaton Library does not have it that far back.) Thanks! Ruth

I am trying to find an obituary, newspaper or otherwise, cemetery record, etc. on a long-time resident of Walnut, Illinois. He is Charles Freeman, b. 1835 and we believe died abt 1890. May have been the Walnut constable at one time. He was married to Nancy BREWER and they had children Richard, Stephen, May, Josephine, Velora and Charly. Any help or pointers would be greatly appreciated. Sincerely, Mike Peterson

Robert, While I can't help you with the obits, I'm wondering if you are any relation to Rudy Spaulding from Fisher, IL? I correspond with his daughter, who has done a lot of work on both sides of the family. If you are related to Rudy, and you don't know his daughter Pam, I would be happy to pass your email on to her to see if she can help you in the search. Also, have you tried to order any old newspapers from that area through interlibrary loan? Do you know the names of the newspapers? Have you checked with any of the churches in that area for church records? Obits from that time sometimes were very brief and concise. And BTW, where is Bureau County? Southern, central or western Illinois? I live in DuPage County by Chicago, so I probably can't help much, but I'm willing to try if you know of any resources in the Chicago area. Good luck! Ruth Volunteer for Random Acts of Genealogical Kindness http://www.RAOGK.org PS - You might also try the RAOGK website and see if there are any volunteers from Bureau County who could check the local libraries for you. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Robert Ross" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, March 26, 2003 1:44 PM Subject: [IL-Old-News] George and Loretta Spaulding > Seeking obituaries for GEORGE ABISHA SPAULDING, who died in Bureau County, > Illinois 21 Jan 1879.
