Hi Jeannie and Joann: RR workers were issued SS cards ... but you'll note that all their numbers started with a "707" rather than the area numbers as most others are "325" for Illinois, etc. The numbering system is a good clue when you do run across a 707 SS card or number ... you'll know they had a RR connection. And, RR workers DO sometimes show up in the SSDI listing ... my dad worked for CB&Q for 48 years ... but it took three years before his death info was on the listing ...
