I've heard of this problem before. There are at least two possibilities here. SSDI reports not the county the person DIED in but the last county they LIVED in. If your mother died in a nursing home or hospital in a different county, then it will be reported as a different county, but won't be "wrong." Confusing, but not wrong to SS. This gets even more confusing for those folks who have two or more homes. I have no idea which one is used. At least some programs, like Rootsweb, allow you to attach a post-it to explain the real situation. Do that on as many SSDI search engines as you can, if this is the problem in your case. Another problem is that I've heard of people for whom the person really did die in the county they lived in, and the families try for years to get it changed, and never do. You might try your congresperson or representative. After all, hopefully you vote. There's no excuse for government officials to be this unresponsive. And I think a letter would be more effective, except to Congress. There it takes forever to get past the anthrax inspections. Fax to them. Good luck. I have even sent emails trying to get this corrected but so far it still has her listed in a different county. Even checked her SS number to make sure that it was the right one that was listed wrong. In later years that could really lead to some problems for researchers with wrong listings of place of death. ----- Original Message ----- From: "mamahop" <mamahop@pioneer-net.com> To: <IL-OBITS-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, May 30, 2005 1:48 PM Subject: [IL-OBITS] RE: So Sec death index > I wanted a obit look up and got the death date from the So Sec death index > and the lady lived in the same town as where the So Sec death index said she > died and the lady couldn't find anything....why does death index say > something and then no one can find anything...this has happened twice. > > Also So Sec death index says its up to date though 2004 and I know someone > died in 1990 and I have the So Sec number but its not there and I know he > died in 1990 as I was married to him.. > > anyone know why the So Sec death index say's one thing and then you can't find the information. My mother had lived in this county for the past 72 years, owned a business, home etc. When she died she was in the nursing home just 10 blocks from where she had lived at almost all of her life. She died at 93 in this county. But she is listed as dying in another county that is south of here. I have her death certificate which states which county she died in, the one that she had lived in for 72 years. It is just listed on the IL social security site wrong. So, a good lesson to learn by this, is not believe what is on the internet sites as a true statement, check the facts 3 different ways....... Even if it is a government site, as they make mistakes too. ----- Original Message ----- From: <doriswaggoner@juno.com> To: <IL-OBITS-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, May 30, 2005 11:46 PM Subject: **SPAM: Re: [IL-OBITS] RE: So Sec death index > > I've heard of this problem before.
