I wanted a obit look up and got the death date from the So Sec death index and the lady lived in the same town as where the So Sec death index said she died and the lady couldn't find anything....why does death index say something and then no one can find anything...this has happened twice. Also So Sec death index says its up to date though 2004 and I know someone died in 1990 and I have the So Sec number but its not there and I know he died in 1990 as I was married to him.. anyone know why the So Sec death index say's one thing and then you can't find the information. Anyone else have this problem.
The individual may not have actually lived in the area in which she died. For example, if the individual died at a hospital or nursing home outside of the area they spent the majority of their life, an obituary may not have been published in that area but rather in their 'hometown'. As for the social security index, not all deaths are recorded in the index due to a variety of reasons. I've had good luck with SSDI; as I understand it, the family has to file for benefits after the death? I miss some too; however, some occupations do not pay into SS? Otherwise, I don't know. ladybug ----- Original Message ----- From: "mamahop" <mamahop@pioneer-net.com> To: <IL-OBITS-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, May 30, 2005 1:48 PM Subject: [IL-OBITS] RE: So Sec death index >I wanted a obit look up and got the death date from the So Sec death index > and the lady lived in the same town as where the So Sec death index said > she > died and the lady couldn't find anything....why does death index say > something and then no one can find anything...this has happened twice. > > Also So Sec death index says its up to date though 2004 and I know someone > died in 1990 and I have the So Sec number but its not there and I know he > died in 1990 as I was married to him.. > > anyone know why the So Sec death index say's one thing and then you can't > find the information. Someone wrote I wanted a obit look up and got the death date from the So Sec death index and the lady lived in the same town as where the So Sec death index said she died and the lady couldn't find anything....why does death index say something and then no one can find anything...this has happened twice. This may have happened if the person who died resided at a rest home in that area, but he and his family originally lived elsewhere and his actual burial might have been in another place. We moved my father to be near us after my mother died. He will more than likely die in our county seat town, but because no one here will know him there won't be an obituary in the paper here unless I personally see that it is done. You might want to send for a copy of his death certificate to see what it says. My uncle is not listed in the social security death index. There had been an earlier marriage in his life, and my mother did not want his children to find out about it. She told us she had had the records sealed. I have had people tell me that that just doesn't and can't happen. To find people on social security indexes now and then I go to the advanced search, type in a year of birth, a year of death, and a given name without a last name. Sometimes something comes up. I might try other searches with only a last name in case SS has mixed up a given name. You can try all sorts of searches. Also, they have not recorded a complete listing so if you type in a place of death and they haven't put one there you won't get what you are looking for. Please keep trying! Good luck! There's nothing in the Social Security death index that indicates a place of death. Sometimes the last place of residence is given, but that is not necessarily the place of death. Also, aren't the only names in the Social Security Death Index those who received a benefit? As you probably have several answer you but the problem that I have is that my mother is listed as dying in a different county from the one that she really died in. I have even sent emails trying to get this corrected but so far it still has her listed in a different county. Even checked her SS number to make sure that it was the right one that was listed wrong. In later years that could really lead to some problems for researchers with wrong listings of place of death. ----- Original Message ----- From: "mamahop" <mamahop@pioneer-net.com> To: <IL-OBITS-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, May 30, 2005 1:48 PM Subject: [IL-OBITS] RE: So Sec death index > I wanted a obit look up and got the death date from the So Sec death index > and the lady lived in the same town as where the So Sec death index said she > died and the lady couldn't find anything....why does death index say > something and then no one can find anything...this has happened twice. > > Also So Sec death index says its up to date though 2004 and I know someone > died in 1990 and I have the So Sec number but its not there and I know he > died in 1990 as I was married to him.. > > anyone know why the So Sec death index say's one thing and then you can't find the information.
