My father shows up in the SSDI, even though my mother is collecting his SS pension. So that's not the reason some people don't show up. My dad's not using the SSN any more, even though my mother's getting the pension. So the SSN is "closed out" in that sense. My dad's been gone five years. But think what a mess it would be if you couldn't post the listing on the SSDI for a 20 year old who died in Iraq leaving a one year old and a pregnant wife. Those children are dependents at least through 18, and maybe until they finish their educations. They get money from SS that long. The information needs to get on the SSDI long before that. So I don't think that's the criterion. I haven't had the problem but this is a guess. My mother, 90, has a SSN. But she worked less than 10 years and is collecting on my father's SS pension. I wonder if when she dies she will not show up for that reason? You could call the SS 800 number and ask why. Good luck though. Don't call MT, and be prepared to sit on the phone all day getting busy signals or waiting on infinite hold. Or if there's a SS office near you, go sit all day, getting there when they open. Somebody has to send the data to SS. I think it's the funeral home. So if they don't do it in a timely fashion, it doesn't get to SS in a timely fashion. And though the sites say its up to date through 2004 don't believe it. Sorry if all this sounds cynical. But we're dealing with a government bureacracy here. As you probably have several answer you but the problem that I have is that my mother is listed as dying in a different county from the one that she really died in. I have even sent emails trying to get this corrected but so far it still has her listed in a different county. Even checked her SS number to make sure that it was the right one that was listed wrong. In later years that could really lead to some problems for researchers with wrong listings of place of death. ----- Original Message ----- From: "mamahop" <mamahop@pioneer-net.com> To: <IL-OBITS-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, May 30, 2005 1:48 PM Subject: [IL-OBITS] RE: So Sec death index > I wanted a obit look up and got the death date from the So Sec death index > and the lady lived in the same town as where the So Sec death index said she > died and the lady couldn't find anything....why does death index say > something and then no one can find anything...this has happened twice. > > Also So Sec death index says its up to date though 2004 and I know someone > died in 1990 and I have the So Sec number but its not there and I know he > died in 1990 as I was married to him.. > > anyone know why the So Sec death index say's one thing and then you can't find the information. Your friend was very lucky. My sister tried using my grandfather's SS# to find his place of death. But was told by SS that they did not give out information on living persons. My sister then told them that the family had received word of his death in the 1960's. She further asked after several contacts with SS if they would forward a letter to the person using his name and SS#. They refused. We did some further searching and I was able to track down via the Department of Vital Statistics in California that he had indeed died in 1950...some 10 years prior to someone calling my mother and her siblings asking for money to bury their estranged father. My sister notified SS of our proof of his death via his death certificate...she has not heard from them again... From what So Sec told me is I can draw on my husband who passed away as we was married over 10 years and I'm disabled (job injury). I was told that if I remarry I can't draw on him anymore. As you have to be married 10 years and not have remarried. So if his first wife had not remarried (they was married 22 years) she and I both could draw. Now I only get a percentage of his money now but when I turn 66 I will get all his and my still get my own disability too...wow that is something to look forward to. and that will get me about $400 more a month when I'm 66.
Well, Joann That is a very good question to say the very least. My info comes from the 1960s when I helped take care of an old lady across the street. We became good friends. She had worked for the RR and told me she did not get Soc. Sec. because she had a RR pension and was not allowed to have both. Jeannie From OR In a message dated 5/30/2005 2:24:17 P.M. My ex-husband is 9 months younger than I am. We had been divorced for 20 years when I applied for Social Security. When he became eligible for drawing his Social Security he was asked if he wanted part of mine. I was so horrified since I was not getting much that I never did understand about that philosophy. However, he told them he did not want to do that to me. Jeannie from OR In a message dated 5/30/2005 1:51:31 P.M. Pacific Standard Time, doriswaggoner@juno.com writes: But if you were married to him for 10 or more years, you can draw off his earnings after he dies. If you are remarried, you have to choose among your own pension, your husband's pension, or your ex-husband's pension. If you take any husband's pension, you get a big cut. In my case, my ex has been married 4 times. (His name's different, so I'm not giving anything away.) One was brief. But the others were all 10+ years. When he dies, three women could potentially draw off his account. In my case, I'll get more to usse my own account, but I don't know about the other two. But if he is an ex-husband, SS will not notify you. It is your responsibility to find out that he is dead and notify them, proving that you were married and divorced. Another use for the SSDI, if you're not in contact. Doris

If my memory serves me right, in order to get the burial benefit the individual had to be living in the spouses house. My parents did not get the burial benefit because, they were not divorced, but did not live together atthe time of death. I believe that was the reason. They are both listed in the SS Index because the funeral home notified SS at the time they picked up the bodies. Doris: My mother's SSN showed up as her own and she was drawing off my fathers SSN. So I would imagine hers will show up. Also I remember reading somewhere that the states where not required to submit the deaths to the SSDI pior to 1962. So that may also explain why someone with a SSN does not show up. There's nothing in the Social Security death index that indicates a place of death. Sometimes the last place of residence is given, but that is not necessarily the place of death. Also, aren't the only names in the Social Security Death Index those who received a benefit? Someone wrote I wanted a obit look up and got the death date from the So Sec death index and the lady lived in the same town as where the So Sec death index said she died and the lady couldn't find anything....why does death index say something and then no one can find anything...this has happened twice. This may have happened if the person who died resided at a rest home in that area, but he and his family originally lived elsewhere and his actual burial might have been in another place. We moved my father to be near us after my mother died. He will more than likely die in our county seat town, but because no one here will know him there won't be an obituary in the paper here unless I personally see that it is done. You might want to send for a copy of his death certificate to see what it says. My uncle is not listed in the social security death index. There had been an earlier marriage in his life, and my mother did not want his children to find out about it. She told us she had had the records sealed. I have had people tell me that that just doesn't and can't happen. To find people on social security indexes now and then I go to the advanced search, type in a year of birth, a year of death, and a given name without a last name. Sometimes something comes up. I might try other searches with only a last name in case SS has mixed up a given name. You can try all sorts of searches. Also, they have not recorded a complete listing so if you type in a place of death and they haven't put one there you won't get what you are looking for. Please keep trying! Good luck! Gayle in Kansas

Also So Sec death index says its up to date though 2004 and I know someone died in 1990 and I have the So Sec number but its not there and I know he died in 1990 as I was married to him.. anyone know why the So Sec death index say's one thing and then you can't find the information. Anyone else have this problem.
I've had good luck with SSDI; as I understand it, the family has to file for benefits after the death? I miss some too; however, some occupations do not pay into SS? Otherwise, I don't know. ladybug ----- Original Message ----- From: "mamahop" <mamahop@pioneer-net.com> To: <IL-OBITS-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, May 30, 2005 1:48 PM Subject: [IL-OBITS] RE: So Sec death index >I wanted a obit look up and got the death date from the So Sec death index > and the lady lived in the same town as where the So Sec death index said > she > died and the lady couldn't find anything....why does death index say > something and then no one can find anything...this has happened twice. > > Also So Sec death index says its up to date though 2004 and I know someone > died in 1990 and I have the So Sec number but its not there and I know he > died in 1990 as I was married to him.. > > anyone know why the So Sec death index say's one thing and then you can't > find the information.
