Hi Wayne, Haven't heard from you for a while. Try emailing Rene in Decatur, he could probably look that up or if you are close to an LDS Family History Center you could order a film with it on it. My father in law lived in one county but the hospital he went to for emergency suguary was in another county. So since he died in the new county, that is what is on his SS. But they also put paid last to and it is usually a zip code. I believe you can report the error and they will correct it? evelyn , ________________________________________ PeoplePC Online A better way to Internet http://www.peoplepc.com
My mother had lived in this county for the past 72 years, owned a business, home etc. When she died she was in the nursing home just 10 blocks from where she had lived at almost all of her life. She died at 93 in this county. But she is listed as dying in another county that is south of here. I have her death certificate which states which county she died in, the one that she had lived in for 72 years. It is just listed on the IL social security site wrong. So, a good lesson to learn by this, is not believe what is on the internet sites as a true statement, check the facts 3 different ways....... Even if it is a government site, as they make mistakes too. ----- Original Message ----- From: <doriswaggoner@juno.com> To: <IL-OBITS-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, May 30, 2005 11:46 PM Subject: **SPAM: Re: [IL-OBITS] RE: So Sec death index > > I've heard of this problem before. Will someone please lookup a death notice or obit for: Peter Nichol, d.3/19/1884 in Chicago. Cert 00038856 Peter Nichols, d.8/9/1895 in Chicago, cert 00013606 I thought he died in Winnebago County but the only listings are in Cook. The death notice and obit may give enough information that I can tell which is my relation. Thank you in advance. Linda
Hi, Another wrinkle in this complicated SS issue - both my parents died in MN.\ and were buried from the same funeral home in Chicago, IL. They had lived there for a little over a year when my mom died (I am sure her SS checks were being sent there)my mom's SSDI states her last residence in (Cook) IL and the wrong date by 10 days. My dad died 3 years later and they have his information correct - go figure. I just had to put my 2 cents worth in. <grin> Joyce -----Original Message----- From: heartsweetnana@adelphia.net [mailto:heartsweetnana@adelphia.net] Sent: Tuesday, May 31, 2005 3:03 AM To: IL-OBITS-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [IL-OBITS] RE: So Sec death index Social Security Death Index lists the last residence they sent benefits to, not necessarily where the person died. Errol, I was stating what Family Tree Maker stated to me about 10 years ago. I guess I was misinformed... Mike
Hi Jeannie and Joann: RR workers were issued SS cards ... but you'll note that all their numbers started with a "707" rather than the area numbers as most others are "325" for Illinois, etc. The numbering system is a good clue when you do run across a 707 SS card or number ... you'll know they had a RR connection. And, RR workers DO sometimes show up in the SSDI listing ... my dad worked for CB&Q for 48 years ... but it took three years before his death info was on the listing ... Doris you are right about people living together and not getting legally married. They would get their checks cut off. I read in a paper one time where this man and woman did get a divorce so she could get medical help and more money. BUT they could live together and did. I have a friend whose mother started living with a man. They knew they would lose their money so in place of going down and getting a license and get married legally, they set up in the womans back yard tables & chairs, invited their children to come and they repeated their vows to each other. The kids were satisfied. I know I lost four hundred dollars when we moved from CA to Mo. It sure hurts to. I feel women are not treated equal in SS. Hi List, Thought I could put in a word as to what happened to my family. My Mother passed away in 1985. I had started my family history by mid 1990's and started not knowing hardly anything about my Mother's family so it took a few years down the line to really get going. On the internet I had found a spot, which we all lovingly know as the "S.S.D.I." Social Security Death Index. To my awful surprise my Mother was not listed and I was totally baffled! I knew that she had a social security number and had used it throughout the years before her death but why wasn't she listed? I just could not understand this. Finally I decided to take a leap of faith and call the local area Social Security office. Upon the investigation of why she was not listed they offered this reason: a glich in the system back in 1985 had prevented her name to be listed in their master computer. Shortly after making this phone call her name and info. now shows up on the list. So, I guess my tip would be if your ancestor/family member does not show up on the S.S.D.I list sometimes it helps to get ahold of your local office and inquire why. Hope this helps Connie Westcott __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! Mail has the best spam protection around http://mail.yahoo.com
I've heard of this problem before. There are at least two possibilities here. SSDI reports not the county the person DIED in but the last county they LIVED in. If your mother died in a nursing home or hospital in a different county, then it will be reported as a different county, but won't be "wrong." Confusing, but not wrong to SS. This gets even more confusing for those folks who have two or more homes. I have no idea which one is used. At least some programs, like Rootsweb, allow you to attach a post-it to explain the real situation. Do that on as many SSDI search engines as you can, if this is the problem in your case. Another problem is that I've heard of people for whom the person really did die in the county they lived in, and the families try for years to get it changed, and never do. You might try your congresperson or representative. After all, hopefully you vote. There's no excuse for government officials to be this unresponsive. And I think a letter would be more effective, except to Congress. There it takes forever to get past the anthrax inspections. Fax to them. Good luck. Jeannie, What you were told was shocking. I also think it was wrong. Given the wide range of differing opinions in this thread today, it's clear there is a LOT of confusion about SS, SSD, and SSDI. And it's so complicated that different SS employees can give out incorrect info. I think that if it had come down to running it through their computers, it would have come out right--he couldn't have yours and his too. But a person could have easily told him wrong. He may not have fully understood it either, or in my state of shock I did not hear his explanation. Jeannie from OR In a message dated 5/30/2005 3:58:13 P.M. Remember that while how much you get depends on how much money you (or he) made, the money does not come directly out of the money you paid in. That's what the whole fight over SS in Congress right now is about. The money we will get comes from the younger folks who are working. That has always been the way it worked. So his "taking" some of yours wouldn't have taken a penny of yours. It would just have added a little to his income. It would have added to the public debt, however. I don't think that's part of what Congress is fighting over, because in total, it's very minor. The big problem is that there are fewer and fewer working people to pay for retirees. I will not take my ex's SS, because it would be a lot less than taking my own SS. I know his next wife, and the same will be true for her. I was told that you can't take your own SS and your ex's, so you'd only take your ex's if, like my mother, your own is very small. In my ex's case, he may have one wife, who he may still be married to, collecting his SS when he dies. It does surprise me that your ex was told he could have both his and yours. That contradicts what I was told. But then different people at SS could give different info. Doris -- Jeannabee@aol.com wrote: My ex-husband is 9 months younger than I am. We had been divorced for 20 years when I applied for Social Security. When he became eligible for drawing his Social Security he was asked if he wanted part of mine. I was so horrified since I was not getting much that I never did understand about that philosophy. However, he told them he did not want to do that to me. If you are remarried, you have to choose among your own pension, your husband's pension, or your ex-husband's pension. If you take any husband's pension, you get a big cut. In my case, my ex has been married 4 times. (His name's different, so I'm not giving anything away.) One was brief. But the others were all 10+ years. When he dies, three women could potentially draw off his account. In my case, I'll get more to usse my own account, but I don't know about the other two. But if he is an ex-husband, SS will not notify you. It is your responsibility to find out that he is dead and notify them, proving that you were married and divorced. Another use for the SSDI, if you're not in contact.
