These Churches span 100 years... Cradle of Area's Lutheranism Scattered thruout the northeast corner of DuPage county and nearby locations in Cook county are several Lutheran churches that some church historians refer to as "the cradle of the Lutheran faith in the CHicago area." Two of the churches, Zion Lutheran church in Bensenville and St Peter's Lutheran Church in Schaumburg are more than 100 years old and were built by German immigrants who originally settled there. Rev Kurt Grotheer, pastor of the Lutheran Church of St Luke in Itasca, said the oldest known Lutheran church in the area is the Zion Lutheran church in Bensenville built 125 years ago. Began with log cabin Grotheer said the German settlers were farmers who came to the area because of the rich farmland. He said the group carried on family services while they tamed the environment. But their numbers grew and they needed a church and a school. They built a log cabin and hired a 20 year old printer from Chicago named Ludwig Cachand to act as minister and school teacher. Cachand, a Prussian was also known as L C Ervendberg. Cachand stayed with the group until 1840. He joined the crowds flowing west in search of new fortunes and was killed by a band of Mexican Indians in Texas in 1863, Grotheer said. St Peter's Second Oldest In 1861 the congregation of Zion Lutheran completed a permanent brick church and later build eight schools to service farm children. The church had become the social and civic center of the area. Later, churches were built near some of the schools and one of them was St Peter's Lutheran church Schaumburg. St Peters is a near copy of Zion Lutheran. It was built "some time after 1855" and is the second oldest Lutheran Church in the Chicago suburban area, Grotheer said.
