    3. Mary Catherine Wiese formerly of Elgin Graveside services for Mary Catherine Fearn Wiese, 86, of Mount Ayr, Iowa, will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, at Bluff City Cemetery, Elgin. Born July 31, 1917, in Nokomis, Ill., the daughter of Joseph and Mellie Fearn, she passed away Monday, Jan. 26, 2004, at Ringgold County Hospital, Mount Ayr. Mary spent her childhood on a farm near Nokomis until her father died when she was 13 years old and attended school in the farming and coal mining community. After the death of her father, Mary, her mother, and brother, Joe Fearn, moved to Elgin. Mary began working in a garment factory at age 14, then, after a short time, she began working at Elgin National Watch Company. Later she was employed by Shakeproof Division of Illinois Tool Works, where she had various jobs for nearly 30 years. Mary met and later married Elroy Wiese on April 11, 1942. They lived on a farm north of Elgin for a time until the tollway came and forced them off the farm. They moved to Elgin, making their home on Logan Street, until Elroy died in 1975. Mary continued to live in her home until 1979, when she retired and moved to Mount Ayr, where she ! became very active in community projects. She was an active member of the Ringgold County Hospital Auxiliary, the Mount Ayr Chamber of Commerce, Welcome Wagon, First Christian Church and Clearview Nursing Home. She also was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church of Elgin. Rejoicing that she is now with her Lord, she will be deeply missed by her daughters, Shirley (Gary) Digerness of Escondido, Calif., and Sheila (Bob) Shafer of Mount Ayr; grandchildren, Devin and Hanna Digerness of San Marcos, Calif., Kristin Digerness of Escondido, Michael Shafer (Erin Johnson) of Minnetonka, Minn., and Amy Shafer of West Des Moines, Iowa; and many nieces, nephews, and a host of friends. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Joseph and Ira Fearn. Visitation will be from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday, at Wait Ross Allanson Funeral and Cremation Services, Elgin Chapel, 51 Center St., Elgin.
