Edition: Chicago Tribune Robert Atcher, the late Schaumburg mayor credited with guiding the village from its farmland beginnings into a modern northwest suburb, will be memorialized Sunday at 5 p.m. at St. Matthew Catholic Church, 1001 E. Schaumburg Rd. Atcher was village president from 1959 to 1975. He died last October in his Kentucky home at the age of 79 after a long bout with cancer. His vision and persuasive efforts created some of the facilities that are Schaumburg's trademarks today, such as Woodfield Mall, Prairie Center for the Arts and the Spring Valley Nature Sanctuary. With his tradmark guitar and Stetson cowboy hat, Atcher also won recognition as a country music star and was the master of ceremonies for the "National Barn Dance" television show. The former mayor will be eulogized by Village President Al Larson, village attorney Jack Siegel and longtime friend and Schaumburg resident Helen Slingerland. Village officials plan to dedicate the municipal complex to Atcher later. At Sunday's service, his wife, Maggie, will be presented a plaque that will hang at the village hall bearing the inscription: "Not many people can change the course of history and profoundly touch the lives of future generations. Atcher, a singing cowboy turned politician who led Schaumburg's growth from a sparsely populated farming community in the 1950s to a major metropolis, died Saturday in his home in a suburb of Louisville. He was 79. Mr. Atcher, the Schaumburg village president from 1959 to 1975, was widely regarded as a political visionary who realized that the northwest suburbs had the potential to become a major regional center. Born in Kentucky and raised on a North Dakota horse farm, Mr. Atcher moved to the Chicago area in the 1930s to launch a radio career as a country singer. He became widely known as a radio performer, and was seen on WGN-TV as the emcee of the "National Barn Dance" variety show. His trademark, besides his guitar, was horses. Mr. Atcher grew up breaking mustangs and was quick to point out that he was a "real cowboy." The Atchers were one of the first families to settle in Schaumburg in 1954. With expansion plans for the Northwest Tollway in the works, Mr. Atcher recognized that Schaumburg could become a major commercial, industrial and residential center in northern Illinois. He founded a planning commission in 1954, and with nine other pioneers, led Schaumburg to its incorporation in 1956. "He was a true visionary," said Schaumburg Village President Al Larson. He is survived by his wife, Marguerite; two daughters, Mary Christopher and Cecily Ann; and a son, Robert W. Services will be held Tuesday in Louisville.
