In the 1930s, Mrs. Becker worked as a secretary at Benjamin Electric in Des Plaines, where she met her late husband, Melvin. She stopped working to raise her family. Once her children were in school, she went back to work as a teller at a Palatine savings and loan association. When she retired 18 years later, in 1985, she was a loan officer. During the same time, Mrs. Becker volunteered at the local Salvation Army unit and helped organize "Donut Day," an annual spring fundraising event. In the 1960s, she taught Sunday school at St. Paul United Church of Christ in Palatine. In 1977, she was president of the local American Legion auxiliary. "She thought of everyone else before she thought of herself," said her daughter, Mary. "If something were to h! appen to any of her neighbors, she would be the first one there." Mrs. Becker began as a teller at the bank and also worked as head teller and new accounts manager. Mrs. Becker, who was born in Palatine, died Tuesday, Sept. 12, in Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights. Mrs. Becker was president of the American Legion Post 690 Auxiliary in Palatine from 1977 to 1978. In World War II Mrs. Becker wound coils for U.S. Navy horns and lanterns at the former Benjamin Electric Co., Des Plaines. "She was part of a group of women in Des Plaines that hosted USO dances for the boys in service from Ft. Sheridan, Great Lakes [Naval Training Center] and Glenview Naval Air Station," said her grandson Dennis R. Becker. "It was at Benjamin that she met her husband [the late Melvin C.]. She had a love for life. There wasn't a thing she wouldn't do for anyone, especially at the legion. Other survivors include a son, Dennis M.; a da! ughter, Mary; and two more grandchildren. Mr. Becker died Saturday, June 3, in his home of complications from kidney cancer. Mr. Becker, a 1957 graduate of Luther North High School, Chicago, received a master's degree in agricultural economics from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1963. He was an economist from 1963 to 1989 with International Minerals and Chemical Corp., formerly in Northbrook, and Chemetron Corp., formerly in Chicago, among other companies. Mr. Becker was a financial planner from 1989 to 1998 with Tucker Associates, Rosemont; the Aid Association for Lutherans in the northwest suburbs; and Del Webb. "He was loyal to family and friends," said his wife of 39 years, Joan M. "He was a dedicated son, a loving father and husband. He particularly enjoyed his two beautiful granddaughters." Becker, 74, of Raleigh, N.C., formerly of Des Plaines, died Wednesday, Jan. 19 in Raleigh. Mr. Becker, who was born in Des Plaines, retired in 1966 as a U.S. Army major after 20 years of service. Mr. Becker served in an ordnance unit in the South Pacific during World War II. After several years as a civilian, Mr. Becker re-enlisted and served in the Panama Canal Zone, in Detroit and in Taiwan during the 1950s. He was commanding officer at Ft. Hood, Texas, in the early 1960s and later served in Turkey before retiring from 5th Army Headquarters in Chicago. "He was a very strong and determined man," said his wife, Anne M. "He always wanted what was best for his children. Family came first for him. Golf was next. He was always a very honorable man," his wife said. Other survivors include a son, Robert A.; two daughters, Katherine Porter and Barbara Clarke; a brother, Donald; a sister, Frieda; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Mr. Becker, who was born in Sherburn, Minn., retired in 1985 as a delivery driver and pressman at Langer Printing Co., Palatine, after nearly 15 years of service. In the 1960s, Mr. Becker was a maintenance man at the former Palatine Savings & Loan Association and had been a lawn mower repairman, for nearly 20 years, at the former George A. Davis Inc., Chicago. Mr. Becker was a volunteer firefighter for almost 40 years in Wheeling and later Palatine, until the mid-1970s. He served in the U.S. Army's 43rd Ordnance Battalion of the 9th Armored Tank Division in Europe during World War II, and was awarded three bronze battle stars. "He was one of the first boys to be drafted from Wheeling," said his grandson Dennis R. Becker. "His draft number was 317. He was in the second wave on Omaha Beach (during the Normandy D-Day invasion). He participated in the liberation of Paris. He was in the Battle of the Bulge, the capture of! the Remagen Bridge (in Germany) and met the Russians at the Elbe River. He was a remarkable man," his grandson said.
