1992-01-23 Chicago Tribune (IL) ODLUM FARM`S GERTRUDE M. ODLUM, 96 By Jerry Crimmins. Edition: Chicago Tribune Gertrude McNaught Odlum, 96, a businesswoman, breeder of champion dairy cattle and landowner in the northwest suburbs, died Tuesday in her home in River Forest. Mrs. Odlum owned two approximately 500-acre farms in what is now called the northwest corridor, between Lake Street and the Northwest Tollway. Her farm in Schaumburg, known as Rolling Acres, was sold to developers in 1986 for $20 million. The second farm, known as the Odlum Farm, between Hanover Park and Roselle, which was the largest tract remaining in that area, was sold to developers in 1989 for $35 million to $40 million. Until 1990, Mrs. Odlum was chairman of the board and a former president and secretary-treasurer of Duro Metal Products Co. of Chicago, which was co- founded by her two late husbands in 1917. The company, which was once one of the largest manufacturers of hand tools in the U.S., was dissolved in 1990, said Gary Reed, one of the co- executors of her estate. Mrs. Odlum also served on the boards of nine Chicago-based corporations, and was a board member of the Bensenville Home Society and St. Paul`s House in Chicago. Born in Chicago, Mrs. Odlum first married Norris McNaught, who bought Rolling Acres in 1937 at what is now Barrington and Schaumburg Roads north of Lake Street. ``We could make it from River Forest in nothing flat,`` Mrs. Odlum recalled in a 1987 Tribune interview. ``It was all nothing on Lake Street. Schaumburg was nothing. It had a feed store and two taverns, that`s it.`` McNaught died in 1942. His widow ignored advice to sell and decided to fulfill her late husband`s dream of raising the top herd of cattle in the country. In 1967, her Rolling Acres Farm won the coveted awards of both premier exhibitor and premier breeder of Guernsey cattle at the International Livestock Exposition in Chicago. That year, she also won the purple ribbon for the grand champion Guernsey cow at the exposition for the fifth straight year. In 1966, she married her business partner and longtime friend, Harry Odlum. He owned the Odlum Farm and also raised Guernseys. Odlum died in 1974. Mrs. Odlum lamented the foreseeable loss of her farmlands to expanding suburbia, but said, ``I want to see it developed into something great, not just a lot of little homes on it.`` About 400 acres of the Odlum Farm is being developed for a mixed-use industrial park, said the developer`s attorney, Joseph Ash. At the old Rolling Acres Farm, 201 acres was set aside for office buildings and shopping centers. Mrs. Odlum is survived by a sister, Alma Schroeder. Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. Friday in the Matz Funeral Home, 3440 N. Central Ave., Chicago. Services will be held there at 10 a.m. Saturday. Copyright 1992, Chicago Tribune.
