Hello Marlene, do you have any info on Wilhemina and Fred Topel? My husbands aunt Clara Gathman was married to an Ernst/Ernest Topel and I have found this is a hard line to research. Would appreciate any info you would be willing to share.Grace
Grace, What I have is what I have found on the Internet. I am trying to piece this family together as I had nothing to go from except for my great grandmother's name, Elisabeth Wille. I found Heinrich and Dora Wille coming to the US on May 4, 1872 on the Vandalia from Hamburg on May 4, 1872. With them were Elisabeth born 1852(my great grandmother), Wilhelmina born 1864 and Frederick born 1866. On the manifest it says they were from Gross Wanzer, Sachen-Anhalt, Germany. I found Wilhelmina marrying Fred Topel in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois on August 24, 1883. On the 1900 census I find Fred, Wilhelmina(Minnie) and their children Ewald born March 1884, Carrie born October 1886, Amanda born June 1888, Fritz born November 1889, Mirgine born August 1893 and Helen born October 1896. Wilhelmina's mother, Dora Wille, is living with them at this time. Heinrich Wille died in 1897 in Clayton County, Iowa. The census lists Fred Topel as a brick layer. They lived at 311 Johnson Avenue. I think it is near East 76th Street in Chicago. Now, I have found there are Topel's who moved to Allamakee County, Iowa. I do not know if they belong to the Topel family I am talking about or not. My great grandmother married John Carl Meyer in Chicago on September 27, 1872 and they moved to Clayton County, Iowa in 1874. Allamakee County is just to the North of Clayton County along the Mississippi River. Many German families moved there from Chicago. Do you have any more names and dates I could work from for your Topel's? The name Thies is familiar to me as there are some people by that name here in Sioux Falls, SD. How do the Thies' fit into your tree? I tried to get death certificates for Fred and Wilhelmina Topel and several other Topel's but got the letter back for more money. Now that I have the money I cannot find the letter. Will keep looking. Has this answered any of your questions? Grace, What I have I am not sure of on Fred and Wilhelmina Topel. I have been trying to construct this family. Wilhelmina Wille was my great grandmother's sister - I think. At least they came together with Heinrich and Dora Wille on the ship and we think they are the parents. She came to the US on the Vandalia on May 4, 1872. She was born in Germany (we think Gross Wanzer) in 1864. I found Wilhelmina and Fred getting married in Chicago,Cook County, IL on August 24, 1883. They had 6 children - Ewald -March 1884; Carrie- October 1886;Amanda-June 1888, Fritz- November 24, 1889; Minnie - August 1893 and Helen - October 1896. I think Ewald was also Frederick Topel's father's name. I cannot remember if I had replied to you about this before. I found this as a draft and wondered so I thought I would send it again. So far, I have not found an Ernest Topel but may when I get further into this family. Have you looked into the Illinois Archives? They have a lot of deaths and marriages of Topels. I did see that some Topels moved to Allamakee County, Iowa which is the very Northeast county in Iowa along the Mississippi River.
