Born May 9, 1902, in Chicago, she passed away Wednesday, Feb. 22, 2006, at her Schaumburg home. Helen would have celebrated her 104th birthday this May. She was retired since 1965 as a teacher and principal. She was an avid gardener and had remained active in her church, had been a member of several book clubs, was an active leader in P.E.O. and until a few years ago, still drove to the family's summer place in Ontario, Canada. At 16, she was the first Carl Schurz High School graduate to win a scholarship to the University of Chicago. There, she majored in English literature and minored in German. When celebrating her 100th birthday, she also looked forward to being inducted into Schurz High School's Hall of Fame that May. Helen was the beloved wife of the late Earle; loving mother of John (Karen); proud grandmother of Tracie Micek and Tim Mathews; great grandmother of Kevin, Erinn, Danny and Katie; dear sister of Charlotte Shabino; fond aunt of Helen Marie (Gary) and Ken (Arlene); and great-aunt of many.
