    3. personally, i have been thinking about the answer to this for years.... people are driven there is usually no financial value in it and in fact COSTS the researcher... the time expended would cause an EYE ROLL if our bosses asked us to do just a fraction of the work with even more HINTS on where to search.... i will say, that there is a high in speaking with a famly member from a group that hasnt been communicated with for many generations... perhaps a 100 years... people cry when they return to the homeland or visit where their family member relocated... and what i think wells up in them is the sense that neither are orphans any longer.... 3. St. Johannes Cemetery Alliance SJCA eNews Monday, October 3, 2005 (This newsletter has been sent in RTF format) FAA APPROVES O'HARE PLANS - NORTH RUNWAY CONSTRUCTION BEGINS - FOR ONLY A MOMENT OR SO! As you may have heard from press reports, the FAA issued its so-called "Record of Decision" with respect to the expansion of O'Hare Airport. This was fully expected. In advance, the attorneys for the Church had taken steps to be prepared to take the Church's complaints back to the courts. The attorneys filed a request for what is called a "Stay", to prevent the taking of any action with respect to the Record of Decision. This request was made to the Court of Appeals in Washington, D.C. On Friday afternoon, just hours after the City of Chicago and the FAA began celebrating the issuance of the Record of Decision, the request for a Stay was granted by the Court of Appeals. Although the Stay was granted on a temporary basis, this was a good first step. In the near future, the Church's attorneys will be asking for more permanent protections for the Cemetery, pending full resolution of the various constitutional and statutory issues that are involved. The Church's attorneys remain hopeful that the courts will ultimately rule in favor of the Church's various positions. Unfortunately, there can be no guarantees, and we must continue to be vigilant and to express our opposition to our governmental officials. We obviously understand the high level of anxiety and emotional distress that the periodic pronouncements of the City of Chicago can cause. In particular are the City's statements that they would be beginning construction immediately after issuance of the Record of Decision. Due to the Stay, no such activity is taking place. For those of you familiar with the Airport, also note that the initial activity will be on the North Side of the Airport, far away from St. Johannes. Finally, even if the courts were to rule against us, based upon wording in the FAA's Record of Decision, we currently expect that there will be at least a 6 month period of notice to the family members before any activity would occur at the Cemetery. We obviously continue to hope that it will never come to that. However, at this very initial stage of the court fight that has just started, we thought that such information might provide some comfort. Some of you have already sent comments regarding the interview that the Chicago Tribune published with respect to its conversation with Mayor Daley. In the interview, while continuing to dodge a variety of questions about the Cemetery, Mayor Daley indicated that the City is "working closely with the families", and that the desecration of St. Johannes Cemetery would be "good for the families". To our knowledge, although this process has gone on for over four years now, the City has made no efforts to work with the Church or its families toward coming up with a way to avoid the desecration of St. Johannes Cemetery. Further, we obviously can not figure out how Mayor Daley feels able to speak for the families of those at rest at St. Johannes, when he has never spoken with any of them. For those who are interested in seeing the thoughts of Mayor Daley for themselves, please see: http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/chi-050930daleyohare,1,2430641.stor<http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/chi-050930daleyohare,1,2430641.stor> y If you would like additional information regarding the recent court activities or to review a copy of a letter sent to President Bush, please see the news items regarding the Cemetery on the Website of the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty at www.becketfund.org<http://www.becketfund.org/>. In the meantime, we will continue to do our best to keep you informed of any developments. Obviously, as always, your prayers for St. John's Church and for all of the family members involved are greatly appreciated. OUR SINCERE APPRECIATION This Report has been prepared for SJCA eNews readers by Bob Sell, Esq., friend and spokesperson for St. John United Church of Christ. As always, our sincerest of thanks go out to Bob for all that he has done to help protect St. Johannes Cemetery.

    3. FAA OKs O'Hare expansion, court grounds it October 1, 2005 BY DAVE NEWBART AND LYNN SWEET Staff Reporters Within hours of a celebratory groundbreaking on a project that would greatly expand O'Hare Airport, a federal court stopped construction crews Friday so it could consider a challenge from opponents who claim the plan is too costly and disruptive to area residents and businesses. The temporary stay approved by the U.S. Court of Appeals in Washington, D.C., halts the city's $7.25 billion project until the court can decide whether to hear the case. It gave no timeline for a ruling. The court action "is great news,'' said Wade Nelson, spokesman for the villages of Bensenville and Elk Grove, which brought the emergency petition after the Federal Aviation Administration officially signed off on the plan Friday morning. "We've been confident all along that the facts were on our side.'' Late Friday, city officials said in a statement, "We are confident that the O'Hare Modernization Program will withstand any and all judicial challenges and we will implement the program as planned." 'Historic step forward' The ruling came just after a city-led ceremony on a grassy field at the northwest corner of O'Hare, which is to be home to a new runway under the expansion plan. A long list of business leaders and city, state and national politicos -- including Mayor Daley and U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) -- took turns congratulating one another, then donned hard hats, grabbed shovels and mugged for cameras as they dug into the ground. Daley then gave the signal via cell phone to a backhoe several hundred yards away. It began scooping dirt as part of site preparation. This is "an historic step forward'' that will expand "the state's leading economic engine,'' Daley said The groundbreaking came during a whirlwind day in which the FAA announced it had approved the city's expansion plan 3-1/2 years after the city proposed it. "O'Hare is now cleared for takeoff," FAA Administrator Marion C. Blakey said soon after the city was formally notified of the decision. The expansion brings "greater safety and greater capacity. This means more flights, much better on-time performance to literally millions of Americans around the country," Blakey said. But Blakey acknowledged that financing for the $7.25 billion first stage of expansion is not in place. The FAA said the average flight delay at O'Hare -- by the time expansion is completed in 2013 -- should be 5.2 minutes, including the additional taxiing time it will take over a much larger airfield. That compares with between 15 and 20 minutes today. While that reduction is not as dramatic as the city had predicted, the FAA's projections assume the airport will be much busier by 2018. The FAA did not say what O'Hare's new flight capacity would be, nor would officials say how long the new configuration could reduce delays beyond then. But in their emergency filing Friday, opponents of the plan said the city's proposal was "fatally flawed in numerous different respects.'' It disputes whether the FAA did a thorough analysis of whether the city could truly raise the money for the project, which could cost more than $14 billion. FAA optimistic on financing The FAA gives "the green light to the ... most costly and complex airport reconstruction project in the nation's history without engaging in any meaningful analysis of whether the funding can ever be amassed,'' the filing says. The FAA should not have given the city permission to acquire more than 500 homes, nearly 200 businesses and an entire cemetery before doing this analysis, it claims. It also says the FAA's ruling violates the religious rights of the members of St. John's United Church of Christ, which runs the 150-year-old St. Johannes cemetery on city land. About 1,300 graves would be relocated. Barry Cooper, who oversaw the modernization plan for the FAA's Chicago-area office, said before the court's ruling that the agency believes the financing will come through. The city said the cost would be covered mainly by airport revenue bonds, passenger fees and federal grants. In making its announcement Friday, the FAA did not say whether the city's request for $300 million will be granted. The bonds, city officials said, will be paid off by the airlines, a cost that will go as high as $1 billion by 2022. City officials said no local or state tax dollars would be used toward the project. MODERNIZATION Cost: $7.25 billion Purpose: Reduce delays (projected to go from average of 17.1 minutes to 5.2 minutes) and increase capacity. Runways: Shift from intersecting to parallel. New terminal: Western facility would add airline gates and parking. New link: People-mover to shuttle among terminals. Who pays: Passengers (via facility charges); airlines (they back airport revenue bonds); federal taxpayers. Who moves: 530 residences, nearly 200 businesses, St. Johannes cemetery. Land needed: 433 acres in Chicago, Des Plaines, Elk Grove Village and Bensenville. City of Chicago, AP

Procession over three miles long. John Henry Rohlwing was born at Schaumburg Center, Cook County, Illinois September 27, 1860. His parents were among the early, sturdy German settlers of Schaumburg. They lived many years on the OLD ROHLWING FARM in the Northwest part of town. They lived in Elgin a while, then started the store now owned by John Fenz and Son. John was confirmed at St Peter's church, then attended Elgin Academy. He married Miss Louisa Lichthardt June 2, 1881. He bought and settled on the COOPER FARM in west Elk Grove which has since been their home. They were blessed with nine children, Hendry died when four years old. The others survive. Emma (Mrs Fred Pfingsten, Alvina (Mrs. August Busse), Martha (Mrs Louis Oltendorf), all wives of prosperous farmers. Herman, William, Hermina, Anna and Hilda all still at home to comfort their bereaved mother. Mr Rohlwing, while planting corn May 25th accidentally scraped the skin of his left shin.. He thot (thought) nothing of it for two days but evidently caught cold in it which developed into a blood poison. He attended the Kastning-Clausing wedding May 27 and the next day while dragging, his leg pained so bad that he had to quit and called his family physician Dr. Black, who appreciating the serious case, called Dr Best in counsel and they inserted tubes to drain off the poison.. Dr Chislett, a specialist from Chicago was called three times; still the case grew worse and Saturday, June 12, in accord with Mr. Rohlwing's expressed wish, he was taken to Habnemann hospital where as a last resort the left leg was amputated about the knee that night; but the poison and operation were too much and he died at 11:30am June 13, 1909 aged 48 years, 8 months, 16 days. Mr Rohlwing had always been a strong healthy man, never sick abed and so his sudden taking off was a sad shock to a large circle of relatives and friends. He was well known as a busy man, honest and successful in business and highly respected by all who knew him. Mr Rohlwing was a large stockholder and director in Arlington Heights State Bank, the past seven years, and universally credited with good business sagacity.. He was also a valued member of Schaumburg Insurance Company for which he served several years as agent.. John Rohlwing was knows far and near for his generous hospitality. No worthy person or cause appealed to him without cheerful aid. He was kind and affectionate to his family and considerate to everybody. He was universally calm especially when he realized his earthly career was near its close. The funeral which took place Wednesday afternoon, June 16, was the largest ever held in this vicinity Over 500 relatives and friends assembled at his late home. There were over 150 teams in the procession from the house to the church, where a much larger crowd had previously assembled. Friends came many miles from all the surrounding towns and country, over 1200 people, and between 300 and 400 teams, would make a procession over three miles long. The services were conducted by Rev F Theiss, pastor of St Peter's church at Schaumburg Center, of which he was a consistent member all of his life often honored with official positions.. The body was recently laid to rest in Schaumburg Cemetery amid a profusion of flowers. The many beautiful and expensive floral tributes and large turnout to the funeral were silent testimonies to the worth and esteem in which deceased was held..
