    3. Unlikely allies BY PATRICK CORCORAN STAFF WRITER schaumburg review 10 27 05 The Becket Fund for Religious Freedom -- a Washington-based law firm that specializes in cases dealing with religious expression -- isn't fighting expansion at O'Hare International Airport for nothing. The organization, at the forefront of a court battle to stop Chicago from relocating a 19th century DuPage County cemetery, has collected nearly $90,000 from Elk Grove Village and Bensenville in the last year. Although little was known publicly about financial arrangement between the Becket Fund and local municipalities, a Pioneer Press investigation determined a significant amount of cash is part of the ongoing legal effort. The two communities have sent checks totaling $87,119 to the Becket Fund since October 2004. That money -- which was drawn from the villages' O'Hare expansion legal defense fund -- was paid to Becket Fund attorneys at a rate of $200 to $250 an hour. Joseph Karaganis, the attorney coordinating Elk Grove's legal opposition to O'Hare expansion, and Elk Grove officials say the expense is minimal compared to the value of the Becket Fund's role in the litigation. "There is a need, in this case, for highly skilled counsel. They have certainly earned at the national level a reputation for protecting religious liberties," Karaganis said. The cost of the legal opposition is troubling, but essential, said Elk Grove Mayor Craig Johnson. "Have we spent an immense amount of money? Yes. It bothers me every day. Did we get the best bang for our buck with that money? Absolutely," he said. Religious rights Founded by Kevin J. Hasson, the Becket Fund for Religious Freedom is a nonpartisan, nondenominational not-for-profit that includes a team of lawyers fighting for religious rights across the nation. Although the Becket Fund is based in Washington D.C., two prominent local leaders are among its advisers -- the Roman Catholic Archbishop of Chicago, Francis Cardinal George and U.S. Rep. Henry Hyde, R-6th, a prominent expansion opponent. In spring 2003 the group got involved in the St. Johannes Cemetery case, representing Elk Grove and St. John's United Church of Christ, which owns the cemetery. The cemetery is now one of the final hurdles to O'Hare expansion. Even though a judge on Tuesday lifted the injunction allowing Chicago to proceed with construction at the airport, expansion opponents will seek another court-authorized work stoppage. In some ways, the battle to protect the cemetery has become Elk Grove's last hope in preventing the airport's expansion. To strengthen its case, the village turned to the Becket Fund. Becket Fund Vice President Anthony Picarello Jr. said the group is a good ally for several reasons. "We are dedicated to the protection of religious freedom for all religious traditions. We have expertise. We don't do 100 different issues. Our attorneys work on religious expression cases exclusively and they are highly motivated and experienced," he said. The Becket Fund is also undefeated in the courts. "That record is still intact," Picarello said. Picarello said there is nothing unusual about its relationship with Elk Grove. In fact, it's quite common for a municipality to link up with the group, although most of the group's work is done pro bono. "Our work frequently involves working with government bodies and municipalities. A small number of our clients pay for our services and we do our work on a must-need basis ... The rate we charge is a not-for-profit rate, or a cost recovery rate, as far as attorney time," Picarello said. But would the Becket Fund still be involved in this case if the village couldn't pay for its services? "That's between us and them," Picarello said. According to the most recent IRS filings available, the Becket Fund has substantial budget. The group brought in a total of $1.5 million in donations in 2002. Between 1998 and 2001, the group brought in nearly $5 million, including $4.5 million in contributions. In 2002, the Becket Fund spent $1.6 million, including Hasson's $200,000 salary and $181,000 salaries for its top two attorneys. Two Becket Fund vice presidents each received $100,000 in compensation in 2002. The cemetery relocations isn't the Becket Fund's only -- or even its most controversial -- cause. The group was involved in the landmark case that prevented a New Jersey man from volunteering as a Boy Scout troop leader. Becket attorneys are currently fighting a California man's effort to remove the words "under God" in the Pledge of Allegiance. It also successfully protected two Kentucky counties' right to display the Ten Commandments in a pair of courthouses. Elk Grove officials said those cases are wholly separate from the group's contribution to saving St. Johannes Cemetery. Elk Grove Trustee Patton Feichter was unaware of the Becket Fund's reputation, but said the village's faith in it is strong despite the group's other interests. "The only reason we are supporting this group financially is because of O'Hare and their ability to fight O'Hare expansion. I -- and I would think the rest of the trustees -- are not at all supportive of some of the issues that the Becket Fund is involved in," he said. "I am not at all supportive of funding those issues ... I know those are things we'd try to stay away from." Johnson said the Becket Fund's reputation for protecting religious liberty is the primary reason for the village's alliance with it. "As far as their stance on other issues, we don't respond to that. The cemetery issue is the only one we care about. What I know about the Becket Fund is this -- they are one of the most well-respected organizations in the country when it comes to issues such as religious expression," he said. "Obviously, they have been very helpful when it comes to the issue of St. Johannes." Chicago officials maintain that O'Hare expansion has to do with advancing national transportation and not religious expression. "In no way, shape or form are we infringing on religious freedoms," said Roderick Drew, spokesperson for the O'Hare Modernization Project. "We're simply seeking to relocate the cemetery in order to modernize this portion of the airport."

    3. schaumburg review 10 27 05 Court lifts O'Hare building injunction BY PATRICK CORCORAN STAFF WRITER Less than a month after an injunction stalled Chicago's O'Hare Modernization Project, the $15 billion airport expansion plan roared back to life Tuesday. A U.S. Court of Appeals judge in Washington D.C. ruled in favor of the city and the Federal Aviation Administration, dissolving the temporary stay filed Sept. 30 by Elk Grove Village, Bensenville and several religious rights organizations. Chicago officials said it means the construction of runways, the demolition of properties in Des Plaines and the acquisition of properties in Bensenville, Elk Grove and Des Plaines will resume. The ruling delighted city officials. "We have directed (contractors) to resume construction immediately because the sooner we resume construction, the sooner benefits to travelers and airlines across the nation can be realized," OMP Executive Director Rosemarie Andolino said in a statement. Elk Grove Mayor Craig Johnson said the ruling has no bearing on the village's continued opposition. "It's important to understand the decision has nothing to do with the merits of our case over this ill-advised, bad plan," he said. The temporary stay had centered on the massive public works project's funding sources and its impact on the 150-year-old St. Johannes cemetery. In order to complete the OMP, 1,300 bodies must be removed and relocated, according to Chicago officials. "The city has looked at every possible option and, believe me, if we could we would avoid relocating the cemetery. It's the last thing the city wants to do," said Roderick Drew, spokesman for the OMP. In its appeal, the city indicated that future construction would not infringe on the cemetery grounds until the appeals process was exhausted. Johnson said that pledge and a new cost-benefit analysis presented by the FAA helped sway the court. "They were very smart ... They took the cemeteries out of the equation, but it doesn't change anything. The process will continue," Johnson said. "We won the first round, they won this round, but we'll win the fight." The village will now request a stay from the Cook County Circuit Court and appeal its case at the federal level, Johnson said

The Chicago suburbs of Bensenville and Elk Grove Village and a churchthat owns a cemetery in the path of the expansion are among theopponents asking the court to block the FAA's decision to allow theO'Hare project. The 440-acre expansion would require that the city purchase and raze2,600 homes and 200 businesses and relocate 1,300 tombs. 3. Below is what someone sent me February 2001. There are two e-mails here. Thanks Sue Quote Hi Sue. I am sending you the site for the film that is available for Rogasen through the LDS site. Go to the following site http://www.familysearch.com Then choose Library--Family History Library Catalog--Place Search. Then enter the town Rogasen. Click on Germany, Preußen, Posen, Rogasen. Then you choose between Church or Jewish records. The church group will allow you to choose from a list of 4 seperate church groups of film, 3 Evanglic and 1 Catholic. Choose and notice the notes on the right of the screen, it will tell you how to go about ordering the film and any other tidbits associated with it. If you have already found all of this, it was still a good refresher for me. I wish I lived closer to an LDS library--2 hour drive and it has very limited hours. I am not sure what Konigreich means, but the reich on the end means empire in English. So maybe it is the Konig Empire. :-) It may also mean the name of the estate(farm) someone worked at. Hi Sue. I finally found time to answer your question about Ragase West Prussia. I did a search on Mikolojewo at the following address: http://www.mapquest.com/cgi-bin/ia_free?link=btwn/twn-map_results&event=find _select&level=5&lat=527833&lng=171000 and found it to be extremely close to Rogozno, ( Rogasen(German name), Posen Province Prussia ) Poland. This coincidentally is the birthplace of my great-grandparents Rohde. They emigrated to Bremer County, Waverly Iowa in 1884. 1. Re: [ILckSCH] Pfingsten and Wille from Ohndorf
    2. Sue Rife
    3. Hello I am looking for information on the Ganske family. Maybe you can help me. I have enclosed the information I have on the Wille family. I too know karen Rowe. Thanks - Sue Rife Descendants of Michael Wille Generation No. 1 1. MICHAEL1 WILLE was born August 16, 1836 in Ragase in West Prussia, Germany1, and died 1926 in St John's Maxfield Cem.-Denver, Iowa-Maxfield Twp #19. He married ROSINE GANSKE Bet. 1859 - 1861 in Germany1, daughter of MR. GANSKE. She was born December 24, 1837 in Mikolojewo, (Konigreich?) Province Posen (Pruessen) Poland1, and died November 07, 1918 in St John's Maxfield Cem.-Denver, Iowa-Maxfield Twp #19. Notes for MICHAEL WILLE: Michael Wille was born August 16, 1836, near the city of Ragase in West Prussia, Germany. In early childhood he was baptized and thereby received into membership of the Christian church. While a boy he attended the Christian day school in his native town. (Notes from St John's-Maxfield church books state he was from Mikolojewo, Province Posen (Pruessen)) In 1863 Michael Wille was married to Rosine Ganske. The young couple first lived in Germany. However, hearing favorable reports about conditions in U.S.A. we soon find them on their way to this country. Here they made their first stay in Schaumburg, Cook County, Illinois and from there they moved to Bremer County, Iowa and settled on a farm in Maxfield Township. This was to be their permanent home. Mr. and Mrs. Wille lived for forty-eight years on this, their home farm. After Mrs. Wille died her husband moved with his son Julius to the neighboring town of Denver. Altogether Mr. Wille lived for fifty-five years in Iowa and in Bremer County. To Mr. and Mrs. Wille were born ten children. Of these five sons and two daughters survive the father. Mr. Wille enjoyed good health. In his long life he hardly ever knew what it meant to be sick. God gave him bodily strength for a longer time than usually comes to man, but at last the effects of old age could be noticed. The children realized that their father might pass away any time. In this time the deceased received holy communion. Death came December 31, 1925 in the early morning. Mrs. Wille reached an age of 89 years, 4 months and 16 days. The Wille family when they came to Bremer County joined the St. John's Lutheran church in Maxfield Township. All their children attended the school supported by this congregation and were confirmed at their church. Mr Wille knew all the founders and fathers of St. John's church personally. With him the oldest member of this church passed away. The death of the deceased is mourned by his children: Mrs. Fred Everding, Readlyn, Iowa: Julius Wille, Denver, Iowa: Mrs. George Meyerhoff, Dunkerton, Iowa: August Wille, Denver, Iowa: John Wille, Fredericksburg, Iowa: Ernst Wille, Denver, Iowa: Herman Wille, Denver, Iowa, and by 18 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren, and by a large number of friends. Interment took place last Sunday in the cemetery of St. John's church at Maxfield. The Rev. Aug. Bartels, pastor of the congregation officiated. He preached his funeral sermon on Hebrews 13:14. Notes for ROSINE GANSKE: Mikolajewo might be in Czarnikau county. Konigreich (Koenigsreich? - translates to "kingdom") ***** Last name spelled Gantzke in church records from Bremer County Iowa. ***** Birthdate also stated as being December 25, 1837 in obit. Church records from St John-Maxfield have December 24, 1837. Obit states married in 1859 and came to America in 1860. 3. Dear mailing-list-members, my name is Nils-Christoph Fiedler, I´m from Germany. I am 23 years old and study Political Science at the University of Munich. Originally I am from Hanover. My Grandfather, Heinrich Christoph Willi Pfingsten, died in 1998. His mother´s name was "Engel Marie Sophie Wille". Both lived in a village called "Ohndorf". It´s in the district of Schaumburg in Lower Saxony. Some of my ancestors emigrated to the USA round about 1850. Through my investigation, finding american descendants of my ancestors, I got to know a woman named Karen S. Rowe. She´s got a website (karensgen.com) about nearly all of her ancestors and probably she is related to me, because her great, great, great grandmother, "Engel Dorothea Wille" (Ohndorf #15), who married "Hans Heinrich Riechers" (Ohndorf #44) and immigrated to the US, seems to be related with my ancestors in Ohndorf. Now I´d like to get someone to know, who might help me, finding american (quasi-) relatives. Nils
