Higgins Ave. starts at Milwaukee Ave. in Jefferson Park, 4834 N. at 5400 W. to 5750 N at 7834 W. Named after Van H. Higgins (1821-1893), who came to Chicago in 1837, was a lawyer, a land developer and a judge of the Superior Court of Chicago. He was a charter member of the Chicago Historical Society. Higgins Road, 5800 N at 8401 W to 6100 N at 9200 W, is a former Indian trail and may have been named for F. Higgins, who, as early as 1834, owned the land through which this road runs.

Werhan of Barrington Neil B. Werhan, 87, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, Dec. 7, 2005. He was born Nov. 11, 1918, in Maddock, N.D., to Lee H. and Helga A. (nee Westby) Werhan. The family moved to the Chicago area in 1924. Neil followed in his father's footsteps, becoming a cabinet maker and carpenter. He worked in residential remodeling and new construction in the Barrington area. With his partner Roy Crumrine, he formed Custom Builders of Barrington (mid 1950s to 1960s). Later, Neil was the on-site construction representative for Mid America Engineers, Chicago. Neil married Marian Elizabeth "Betty" Roselle on May 23, 1941. He proudly served in the Navy during World War II. He was a member of the Barrington Volunteer Fire Department for over 20 years. Neil coached one of Barrington's first Little League teams, was a member of the local American Legion Post and served as President of the Evergreen Cemetery Association. Neil and Betty were actively involved ! with the United Methodist Church. He contributed his knowledge and skills to the building of the chapel of the original church on Hough Street. Neil is survived by his sister, Joan (Mrs. Donald Hollenbeck) of Lincolnshire; his two daughters, Linda Joan and Jenifer Lee; and two grandsons. Neil was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; brother, Lyle Werhan; and sisters, Lola Henderson, Norma Litwiler and Eva Amann. Burial will be private in Evergreen Cemetery in Barrington. She was the wife of the late Martin Simon; mother of Esther (Robert) Wolfe; grandmother of Joseph (Dee) Taylor Jr., the late Robert Taylor and the late Donna Jean Zenner; great-grandmother of 11; great-great-grandmother of 18; great-great-great grandmother of two; sister of six late brothers and five late sisters; and fond aunt of many. Landmeier of McHenry Services for Roger F. Landmeier, 76, will be held at noon Friday, at Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church, 404 N. Green St., McHenry. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Barrington. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today, at the Colonial Funeral Home, 591 Ridgeview Drive, McHenry, and from 11 a.m. until the time of services Friday, at the church. Born June 29, 1929, in Des Plaines, to Barney L. and Caroline (nee Garlish) Landmeier, he died Tuesday, Dec. 13, 2005, at his home. On Sept. 17, 1949, in Bensenville, Roger married Jacquelyn E. Lingren. Mr. Landmeier was an Army veteran of the Korean War and was a member of the Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church in McHenry. Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Jacquelyn; children, Guy (Pat) Landmeier of Marengo, Deborah (Al) Desautels of McHenry, Rick Landmeier of Montgomery and Missy (Dannie) Schramm of Lake Geneva; grandchildren, Guy Jr., Tammy, Wesley, Riley, Danielle and Vaughn; an! d great-grandchildren, Lexie and Logan. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Harvey and Clarence Landmeier; and a sister, Evelyn Hildebrandt. Memorials may be made to Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church.
