Thanks for the question about the accuracy / inconsistencies of the transcribed church registers of St. John. I found the reaction to my question about the cemetery monument partly a little strange because it regarded more formal aspects than contents. Actually I did not want to react any more, because my English is too bad to recognize the finenesses of the language nuances. For me it was clear that the books got transcribed. Which people have done this and in which creative process, is uninteresting for me as long as the results are correct. Karen has pointed to the way of transcription in her 1997 document. The transcribed church registers have to be used with some caution. OK! Years ago I had already asked Karen for missing years after foundation of the church. Anyway, every earnest family researcher permanently tries to verify his results for to make it more certain. However, I must underline once again - as Valentine did -, how valuably the transcription is, because only by that, the information about our forefathers became accessible to the researchers all over the world. Historical documents lose its value if they are shut off from the public. The formal aspect, it could contain inaccuracies, is secondary. This also applies to the work of Elaine Lorinczi. Her effort, to transcribe the inscriptions and to publish it, is very important. Whether she has done this in cooperation with the church is insignificant at first. At doubts one must check it and, if possible, search more deeply onto the sources. I understood the note of Valentine as a reference to the not original sources. If the inaccuracy of the transcribed church register entries would have been so fundamentally that one must doubt the data, it would not help to talk with the creators. I would have expected that history-conscious people from Schaumburg would have revised the data with the original church registers and would have published it. Furthermore, the example with the church St. John (its Cook land) also shows that one may not confine himself to only one County with the research. The church members also lived in Du Page County (e.g. Ontarioville). There was one line that caught my eye in Valentines post--about the Ontarioville Church. Does anyone know if there are any records anywhere of that church? My husbands grandparents were members there. Johann [John] and Dorothea Dohse [Dohs] Bremer. They had several children who died while they lived there and were buried in the cemetery in Ontarioville. Johann Bremer died in 1885 and his widow and children moved to Bloomingdale. He was also buried in the Ontarioville cemetery. There were never any headstones as they were very poor. I would love to find some confirmation of the word of mouth family history that I have on the Bremer family. Grace
how they went about it...? what was the 'straw' that made one or more people decided to commit the time to do the work...? and when whas this done...? and who were the authors of the work? as you know, the books themselves are in old script and lengthy and the sections of the books are not continual, intermixed from page to page..... the records that were typed (and then again processed to another system- perhaps in a wordprocessing docuemnt) are fine to use, especially since they ARE used and without doubt will CONTINUE to be used.... but there is one book that has entries that are almost the same - tho not exact - as entries in another book. The books are not exact however and might actually cover the years when st johns and the ontarioville church were administered by the same minister but... i am not sure, cannot read the script and though have asked script readers to translate, come up with no answers.... i think that the accuracy of the typed sheets are nearer to VERY ACCURATE than to NOT ACCURATE... IF the researcher were to exhaust all resources (that is IF they were to exhaust all resources) and still not find a sacramental entry for a person that perhaps a review of the books at the library would be in order for the periods of time that are logical... the table of contents of the books should be of help to the researcher so that EVERY page is not necessary...... i am NOT suggesting that a full review of the books if the entry is found on the transcribe sheets..ONLY IF there is just no other place to look....and someone is 'lost' there was no question as to them being genuine... as you know i saw the originally typed pages... typed well before photocpy and wordperfect etall... and also that there was a newer version of the same typed pages... in fact, both set were copied and are included in the booklets at both the church and the library... there is no doubt that the work to transcribe the records was a time consuming effort.. NO DOUBT.... and we are lucky to have had people dedicated to reading and transcribing and listing the old script entries... for us, it is a wonderment and a gift..... Millie worked at Union Special for over 30 years all the while assisting her husband with bookkeeping and secretarial duties for Grafton Township. Following her husband's sudden passing in 1977, Millie continued as secretary and treasurer throughout the 1980's until being elected supervisor in 1993. She oversaw the establishment of the Grafton Township Food Pantry and also served as the Executive Director of the Huntley Chamber of Commerce during Huntley's growth spurt. She also served for 26 years as a director of the First National Bank of Marengo. Following her retirement in 2005, she continued to work as a volunteer for Centegra Health Systems in Woodstock. In addition to her community duties, she was a member of the First Congregational Church and the church's ladies organization, Celas, and also as a former Deacon. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary of Huntley. Surviving are her three children; sons, Chuck (Helen) Ruth of Huntley and Bill (Mary Helen) Ruth of Woodstock; daughter, Penny (Russ) Warner of Huntley; six grandchildren, Brad (Sheila) Tharp, Stacy (Brent) Schroeder, Scott, Anthony, Eric and Emily Ruth; two step grandchildren, Jeff and Jami Lidinsky; four great grandchildren; and two sisters, Frances (Del) Borhart of Marengo and Gwynneth Abts of Genoa. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Howard; two infant siblings; a brother, Henry Hartmann; a sister, Florence Schwab; and a grandson, Jason Tharp. Funeral Services will be held at 11 AM Wednesday, January 4, 2006 at the First Congregational Church, 11628 E. Main St., Huntley with Dr. Walter I. Thyng officiating. Burial will be in McHenry County Memorial Park in Woodstock. Visitation will be held from 2 to 8 PM Tuesday at the First Congregational Church and on Wednesday prior to services from 10 to 11 AM. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in her name may be directed to the Centegra Health Systems Foundation, 527 W. South St., Woodstock, IL, 60098. The James A. O'Connor Funeral of Huntley is in charge of arrangements. For information call 847-669-5111.
How is a cemetery relocated? BY PATRICK CORCORAN STAFF WRITER schaumburg review 01 05 2006 If the federal court allows Chicago to dig up and move the 1,300 graves at St. Johannes, how would it be done? "We're very, very careful," said Leiellen Atz, a Southern Illinois University-trained anthropologist and who manages cemetery relocation projects with Georgia-based Brockington Cultural Resources. "We try to be as respectful and thoughtful as possible because we are cognizant of the fact that these are human beings with family and friends." Her tools include old maps, ground penetrating radar, aerial photography, but Atz generally finds graves another way -- by feel. Since many graves are unmarked and others have gravestones that have disintegrated or broken a part, Atz and her co-workers first use a long probe fitted with t-shaped handle, to survey and map the excavation area. "Since the ground was dug and then refilled, it is generally quite a bit softer than the ground around it. Depending on how much traffic there has been in the area and how rocky or sandy the soil is, it is fairly easy to identify the primary shaft -- which has a large rectangular shape -- and even the secondary shaft -- which is a smaller rectangular shape that feels like a ledge. That's where the coffin is," she said. A backhoe is then used to clear the first two or three feet of soil covering each grave. The rest of the work is done by hand, Atz said. "What we see then is usually a nice, rectangular dark stain. That shows you the grave shaft. In most cases, we would excavate down from there using a trowel until I penetrate the coffin level. After that, we photograph the remains for our records and carefully remove what we can depending on how much of the skeletal remains are still left," she said. For the most delicate part of the job Atz employs an unusual tool -- one generally used to eating. "I use chopsticks. Bamboo is durable enough to dig with, but it's doesn't scratch the bones like metal would. They're also easy to find," she said. The remains are placed into a small, 12-inch-by-15-inch box. What does Atz find? Mostly dirt. "There's usually nothing left. Maybe a few teeth. In most cases, all we can tell is if the person buried there was an adult or a child and we can tell that based on the size of the coffin," she said. On some occasions, there are also personal items buried with the dead. "It's very surprising, but we don't find much except for an occasional clothing item, like a button. I found a pocket watch once, but, like I said, it's very rare. In some instances, we've found a small metal plaque that reads, 'At rest,' that was probably affixed to the coffin. A few times, we've found people buried with sheaves of wheat. I'm not really sure of the significance of that, but I think it may be a religious practice." Brockington Cultural Resources has not been contracted by the city to relocate St. Johannes. However, the company has been involved in numerous similar -- albeit smaller -- cemetery relocation projects in Georgia, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky among other states. On average, Atz oversees two to three projects a year. In her experience, Atz has not run into opposition from family members. In fact, in most cases, relatives are pleased to see that their ancestors are being relocated instead of buried under a road or other new construction, she said.
Dear Valentine, Larry and List, yes, Henry Schnadt with his wife Engel Marie are buried on St. Johns cemetery. My question referred to a gravestone in row # 9, which only bears the name "Schnadt". In the meantime I have noticed by sorting the monument-list of Elaine Lorinczi that the neighboring graves are from of 1881 (EXCEL-file available). Therefore I suspect that the grave "Schnadt" is also from that time. Karen Rowe recorded the church books of St.John. After this a son of Henry Schnadt, Carl Heinrich Konrad, aka: Charles, died on Sep 17,1881. I believe that he was buried there. In case I will ever come again to Schaumburg,IL, I'll give you a note. Thank you for your help. Best wishes, Joerg Schnadt -----Ursprüngliche Nachricht----- Von: .... valentine53179 [mailto:valentine53179@hotmail.com] Gesendet: Freitag, 6. to be clear... karen, tho she has a listing, did not record the books of st john but transcribed a typewriter written document that has no authorship to a computerized and sortable document. The original typed version, I have seen, is at the church. the listing itself was created by people unknown in a typed version. I have done a quick reference some time ago and there were instances where the typed document did not match entirely with the books and vs.... so, if you are finding inconsistencies, please consider reviewing the st john rodenburg records at the STDL where there is a full set of printed copies of the books... A quick reference of the record types is contained in each of the several books. I wish we had the chance to talk with the creators of the first typed document to know what they did in the process of creating it... there is no doubt in my mind that it was a multi step process... first an english transcribe to some Cards (perhaps) and then alphabetized and they typed from that... (as the typed sheet predated computers and tabulation equipment...) ----- Original Message ----- From: Jörg Schnadt<mailto:joerg.schnadt@online.de> To: IL-COOK-SCHAUMBURG-L@rootsweb.com<mailto:IL-COOK-SCHAUMBURG-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, January 07, 2006 4:00 PM Subject: AW: [ILckSCH] Schnadt Dear Valentine, Larry and List, yes, Henry Schnadt with his wife Engel Marie are buried on St. Johns cemetery.
