    3. Grace, I don't know what Parish the Pollworth family came from. I have seen so many spellings or misspellings in various records including the church. My Pollworth family settled on a farm along Salt Creek in Addison Township, DuPage County. They attended Zion Church and a few family members still belong there. Sorry that I can't give you more information. 3. Jill... Maria was my ggrandmother. You do have the correct birth and death dates. I don't have a copy of the death certificate, I had the dates that my father had written down and he was very accurate. If you would like to share, I would love it. L.prestley@comcast.net Larry... I will try to fill in a couple of dates for you. Jill had given the correct birth (Jan. 9, 1835)date and death ( Nov. 14, 1927) date for Maria Pollworth Thies. Her parents had a farm in Addison Township, DuPage County (Putten Hill) and attended Zion Church in Bensenville. Her parents came from the same village in Hannover as Fred Thies. Fred (Fritz) Thies was born Nov. 13, 1829 in Hannover. He came to Chicago in about 1847 and worked as a wheelwright for Joseph Schuettler, Chicago's "Wagon King." He bought lots in Chicago, both downtown and on the near south side. He later sold or traded these for farm land in Schaumburg Township between Rohlwing and Meacham Roads. WGN transmitter is on what was the east 120 acres of his land. He was purchasing this land no later than 1860. He died March 6, 1907 and is buried at St. Peter, Sch. Children of Fred and Maria (Mary): Fred Thies bd. 10/31/1853 date given by granddaughter. Died March 30, 1931. Might be buried in Park Ridge. He was born in Chicago. Henry Thies bd. Feb.21, 1856 in Chicago. .....+Sophie Fedderke Thies was born in Addison Township, DuPage County on the family farm. August Thies - those are the correct birth and confirmation dates. August moved around and I don't know where he settled. He is my missing person. I would like to know where you got the death date. There were several August Thies men in the Schaumburg area at that time. One actually lived on the farm south of the Nerge farm on Meacham Road. They were not related to My August. I know that he is not bured at St. Peter. I still have hopes of finding him. I hope that your information will be the missing link. Sophia Thies Pfingsten was married on April 2, 1880 at St. Peters, Sch. IL Herman Thies I have is date of death as 1908, but that might be wrong. I got the info from Lucile Nerge a few years ago. I did not double check with St. Peters books. I have to do that. ......+Regina Fedderke Thies was born in Addison Township, DuPage County, IL I hope this helps to fill some holes. And I would appreciate any documentation that you have for your dates Thank you. LaVonne

I have looked in the Family History Library catalog and there aren't any there, and I will check the Schaumburg library catalog. If they are actually at the church I could certainly get there. I will also look into the Civil War records. I have done work with Civil War pension records, but there's no evidence his widow sought a pension, probably because she remarried. One correction on the children: It was Caroline who married John George Vehe, not Maria. I suppose I should also try to find probate records for Conrad Thies/Hanne Schermer. That might determine whether the Conrad Thies family in Iowa is the son of this family... 2. Christie, The 1870 census that you were talking about in Palatine was Fred and Dora Goebbert Thies. They were buried in Salem Cemetery. The Henry and Sophia Thies that were living with them, Henry was my ggg grandma's brother. His wife was Sophia Hachmeister Thies My ggg grandma was Wilhelmina Thies Biermann. Jill

    2. Karen S. Rowe
    3. Christie, We need someone to look at the burial records at the church at Palatine?, for Johann Otto Engelking died 20 NOV 1869 to see if there is a "place" in Germany listed. You say he is buried at the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery at Palatine? Another good source is his Civil War records! It's been a while since I have done that type of research but years ago I found lots of very interesting documention for an ancestor of mine who was in an Illinois Infantry. Information we put together previously: Children of Johann Otto Engelking and Sophia Alvine Friedericke Thies. Is this correct?: 1. Engel Maria Friederike Engelking born 30 JUL 1866 died 31 JUL 1866 born at Elk Grove; married John Georg Vehe 2. Caroline Naomi Marie Engelking born 17 APR 1868 baptised 10 MAY 1868 at St. Peter Arlington Heights, sponsors Conrad Thies and Heinrich Senne. 3. Heinrich Otto Engelking born 08 FEB 1869 baptised 26 FEB 1869 at Immanuel Lutheran, Palatine, sponsors Conrad Thiess and Heinrich Engelking Sophia Alvine Friedericke Thies who married Johann Otto Engelking was born 25 DEC 1845 (St. Peter Lutheran Church, Northfield, Cook Co., IL Family Register. She was the daughter of Johann Conrad Thies born 27 AUG 1800 at Apelern #3 and his 2nd wife Hanne Friederike Charlotte Schermer born 16 FEB 1813 at Altenhagen (To America 1850 per Schaumburger Auswanderer book). His first wife was Anna Maria Elisabeth Foeler from Schachten?, Germany married 03 OCT 1830 at Apelern. Burial for immigrant Johann Conrad Thies and Hanne Schermer not found. Thies-Foeler had a child who immigrated: Carl CHARLES Conrad August Thies born 30 MAR 1841 at Apelern. His wife was Elisabeth (Unknown). They had several children in IL to 1879 but we do not know where they ended up (Iowa?). Thies-Schermer 1. Sophia Alvine Friedericke Thies born 25 DEC 1845 born Apelern married J. O. Engelking (above) 2. Sophia Caroline Dorothea Thies born 29 SEP 1848 married Hermann Heine 3. Maria Anna Thies born 27 NOV 1850 4. Carl Friedrich Conrad Thies born 13 AMR 1853 married Mary Pfingsten (born 1858) 5. Louise Justine Doris Thies 13 MAR 1853 - 14 SEP 1853 6. Sophia Thies born 16 SEP 1857 (children 2-6 baptised at Northfield, IL). 1. 1870 Census: Palatine Twp., Cook Co., IL Engelking and Thies Families
    2. Karen S. Rowe
    3. Hi Christie, Thanks for the 1870 Palatine Twp., Cook Co., IL Census page. I looked and looked but I could not match up anything of the Thies families that are listed. The closest I find is the one family you listed below, with the eldest Henry Thies age 63... From the Apelern churchbooks there is a Johann Heinrich Christoph Thies born 27 JAN 1880, baptised 31 JAN 1808 at Apelern #3, Germany, first wife Caroline Wilhelmine Wehmhoefer married at Apelern 22 APR 1832. She died before 1847 and he remarried in 1847 at Apelern to Engel Dorothea Justine Eleonore Laging born 03 OCT 1824, baptized 10 OCT 1824 at Apelern #41. The Schaumburger Auswanderer book #1052 lists this: Thies, Joh. Heinrich Christoph, Apelern, Ackersmann, geb. 27.1.1808 in Apelern, verh., mit Ehefrau Engel Dorothea Eleonore geb. Laging, geb. 3.10.1824 in Apelern to Amerika 1850 (the information that they immigrated was noted in their 1847 Apelern marriage record.) I do not have any children listed for this family, nor do I know where they settled in America. By the way, list, other than the Fred and Dora Thies family listed below there are other Thies (and Engelking) families on this page. I have included the information below. Karen Rowe Engelking, Hy age 38 Hessian ", Maria age 32 HEssian ", Martha age 6 IL ", Emma age 4 IL ", Henry age 2 IL Thies, Henry age 38 Hannover ", Mina age 36 Hannover ", August age 13 IL ", Henry age 11 IL ", Sophia age 9 IL ", Emma age 7 IL ", Louise age 5 IL ", Mary age 1 IL Thies, Wm age 34 Hannover ", Dora age 32 Hannover ", Mary age 7 IL ", Willy age 5 IL ", John age 3 IL ----- Page 25 of the Palatine 1870 census includes three Thies families and one Engelking family. 2. And to add to the possible spelling variations, I found Conrad Thies in the 1850 census in Northfield indexed as "Tace" and, believe it or not, as "Zan." If I hadn't already known he should be found there, I would never have found him under "Zan"! Christie Robinson

    3. So, it looks like we have two Sophia Thies that were born between 1856-1858 showing in the St. Peter's records. Here's what I have for Fred & Mary Thies. I'd appreciate any and all updates. 1. Re: [ILckSCH] Thies - Pfingsten in Schaumburg, IL
    2. Larry Nerge
    3. I have a few corrections. I looked again at the church records and the baptism record (page 51, book 1, item 23) definitely shows her birth as Oct 27, 1856 in Michigan, even though her baptism date was oct 24, 1858. Again, her confimation record (page 203, book 1, item 4 for girls) indicates a birth date of Oct 27, 1856. Using the Michigan link, I found a 1860 Census entry in Centreville, Leelanau, MI for the Otto & Sophia Thies family. 3. i think that it wold be a good thing to hold up a bit in this MICHIGAN connection..... yes, it could be that a baptism was years after a birth... but the logic of a michigan birth after the family was already IN illinois is not likely... possible but not likely for our schaumburgers... let some checking occur....it is in the works.... we are aware, right, that these surnames and given names are COMMON....common inour OWN township and surrounding townships.... with such a disparity in birth/baptism, i think we should not assume.... as i said... a check and report is in progress.... 2. LaVonne Presley
    3. Fred and Mary (Maria Pollworth) were my great grandparents. They had four sons and one daughter. The sons were Fred, Henry, August, and Herman. The only daughter was Sophia. She was born in Addison Township (Putten Hill) on Dec. 8, 1858. She married William (Wilheim) Pfingsten on April 2, 1880 at St. Peters in Schaumburg. When her brother Henry (my grandfather) died of a heart attack in 1901, William Pfingsten took care of the money matters and the estate for my Grandmother (Sophie Fedderke Thies) as she was widowed with 5 children (ages 1-9). Sophia's brother August Thies came to run the farm for the family until Henry and Sophie's sons (Henry and William) were old enough to farm on their own. Fred and Mary lived in a second house on the farm that Henry and Sophie had, so Fred could advise his grandsons as they took over the farming operation. There is a picture of the family on Hyperion of the Schaumburg Township Library under Local History. Sophia and William Pfingsten took in my great-grandmother Mary (Maria Pollworth) when she was too old and frail to live by herself. Sophia Pfingsten died on April 5, 1947 at Catherine Hospital in Palatine, IL. She is bured at St. Peters as are two of her brothers (Henry and Herman). This can also be verified in the Dear Cousin 2000 book, Volume 2, page 478. Thank you for asking for my credentials and information. I appreciate getting the facts correct for all future reference. 3. No, I see that entry in the church records (page 265, book 1, item 19) but have never been able to tie them into any family group. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Karen S. 3. and now about the marriage that you commented about pertaining to pfingsten...was that at st peter scha? could you have changed the sequencing of names..? and arrived at a conclusion? an easy enough thing to do? just as an aside for the list... when we look at old records...and this is especialy tru with st peters record... the UNDERLINED name is the name that is commonly used by the person... chancing the sequencing or assuming that because thenames were the same in the string, that it is the same person is not something that should be done... this cnversation about this relationship is rather important and a perfect example to all that CLOSE does not make it TRU... i know that in the next days things will be confirmed....
