    2. Karen S. Rowe
    3. The current LANDSMANN (Issue #41-March 2006) (Crete and Will Co., IL historical information/newsletter), thank you Landsmann, has helped clear up my confusion with Biesterfeld families from Algesdorf to America. Karen Rowe Johann Christoph Biesterfeld (20 JAN 1802-1855) and his wife Engel Maria Hecht (26 NOV 1813-1855) (to Roselle, IL 1847) was the son of *Hans Heinrich Biesterfeld from Algesdorf #11 and Catharina Engel Maria Meyer (Biesterfeld-Meyer married 1797) (Biesterfeld-Hecht married 1835). Biesterfeld-Hecht had a daughter Engel Maria Biesterfeld (12 JUN 1838 - 16 OCT 1936) who married 20 SEP 1856 to Johann Wilhelm Matthias. Matthias-Biesterfeld family settled at Readlyn, Bremer Co., IA. Johann Christoph Biesterfeld (11 NOV 1799 - 07 JAN 1839) and Engel Maria Sophia Reese (21 JUN 1815 - 1854) was the son of *Heinrich Christoph Biesterfeld, Algesdorf #8 and Engel Maria Dorothea Rehborg (Biesterfeld-Rehborg married 1798). Engel Maria Sophia Reese immigrated with her 2nd husband Johann Friedrich Bartels (1809-1887) to Steinhauer, Pawnee Co., NE. *Hans Heinrich Biesterfeld and Heinrich Christoph Biesterfeld were brothers, sons of Hans Heinrich Biesterfeld from Algesdorf #11 and Anna Engel Sophia Bernds. So Johann Christoph Biesterfeld (1802) and Johann Christoph Biesterfeld (1799) were first cousins.

    3. evernone one this list and in search of genelogy should take time out to visit and learn about plats... http://landplats.ilsos.net/Flash/FTP_Illinois.html on these images for the townships we can see what the surveryors saw... we know that the land records were destroyed in the chicago fire, so this map is one of the few things that we have that will actually show what was cultivated in 1853 before land records as we know them were actually created... it was with the 1853 survey that the legal expression that we see in all of our deeds was created and thereafter used...when we here that people were in the area before 1850 it is very hard to support in terms of legal documents... these plat maps (one for each township) could be of help to the earliest of our families in terms of being able to see cultivate fields ON THE SECTION LINES... remember, surveyors walked lines and triangulated to have squared intersects... .... on average, it took a week for one township to be surveyer for internal section lines... i dont know about the time to create the outline of the township, as i do not think that illinois has these available to us... wisconsin does and each are on line with their bureau of commissioners... inilinois however, we have this info from cyberdrive illinois on line or on microfilm at the archives... so, you ask how does this help me... they will help you to see what existed when the earliest settlers were in our areas of interest... marshed, lakes, creeks and timbered areas which are NOT the same as there are today, may give you an idea as to what your people SAW.. andhad to deal with in terms of transportation... and if you are an early early early settler, and you know that you were in SECTION 10, when you see on section 10 in the proper quarter that it was a cultivated field, then you have created a very educated guess that YOUR people were there already farming before the surveyors ever arrived....... you have heard me ask for copies of abstracts for the library before .... that is because ... abstracts are a record for each property back to the beginning records of that PLACE ie 1853... and if there were some transactions earlier than that time, they would have been entered as affidavits.... this informatiion is an excerpt of the official grantor and grantee records in cook county that were burned in the fire.... and abstracts were held by the PERSON not by the government... and many people had abstracts created after the fire for a high price to guarantee that they had proper papers in hand to use if they wanted to sell their land to prove it WAS their land... they had attorneys prepare these using the records that different groups and other attorneys had available at the time (cause those other records were burned...) and as time has gone, these pieces of info have slowly disappeared.... the abstracts the remaining 'proofs'... so and so again, we would be interested in good copies of this information as it will help not only you but others who share properties NEAR to your elder property just because of the way that these records are recorded - covering an area bigger thanjust your elders specific property... so if you do have an abstract, then a copy would be a treasure for many people... and i would appreciate a copy of it... you can send it to rozek-valentine via the www.stdl.org address....next to photos, these are the next best treasure you could ever share with others of our area! truly, the next best treasure! i hope that this helps some of you on list..... hope that you will help us and get us some copies.... there are other bits of info in the archives about townships, including a transcription of the surveyors notes for schaumburg... did not do palatine or elk grove... and info about the surveyor who actually did schaumburg's work....

    3. first off, any images that you or anyone on the list have, i would like to request a scan of it to be sent to STDL for the digital archives... that way MANY people get to see the images and perhaps others of their own family...you may be able to help others with names and they could help you with names.. it is a sharing opportunity that costs nothing and we all have a lot to gain from it... and you dont even need to leave your computer! jrozek@stdl.org is the address to use... and be sure to clearly identifiy the place and the people and perhaps a date as well as YOUR FULL NAME so that propert credits and info are attached to the image... only ONE image per email so if you have more than one, then thatmeansmore than one email... so that rozek can process one email and more on to the next whithout have to keep an email around half done... second... before towns or cities there were areas called townships... apz 36 square miles square , elk grove township being east of schaumburg and palatine being north and wheeling above elk grove... go here and read all there is on this page http://landplats.ilsos.net/Flash/Welcome.html then ENTER then read the entire page and before you click on anything , go to the top and see the five headings...click on each one in turn and read all of those.... then when you are ready, go to view plats... click on COOK then look at the results... and you will see how wheeling, palatine, schaumburg barrington and elkgrove are all next to each other... now in each of these, you can click and see the original plat that was done in 1853.... townships were areas that were govt areas... each started out as numbered places... t41 N R10 e as in TOWNSHIP 41 rows north of the base line in southern ILLINOIS and 10 ranges or columns east of the 3 principal meridian in illinois.... whcih you will see in the info on cyberdriveillinois........ ask on the list if you have problems more with this... ... 3. Hi, I feel stupid asking these questions because I lived in Mt Prospect until I was 12, I didn't ask about townships, etc at that age. I have a little trouble understanding what townships are. There are towns, counties, but I have no idea what makes up a township. Please correct any mistakes I make trying to explain my connections below. My grandmother was born in Arlington Heights, but is it sometimes referred to as Elk Grove, because that is the township? Her parents were William Kirchhoff and Marie Busse Kirchhoff. The house she grew up in was used by the VFW in the early 60's, and maybe earlier. The house she grew up in was originally owned by William Kirchhoff, one of the founders of Mt Prospect. Wm Kirchhoff, William Busse, and Wm Wille were the founders of school district 57, which was the first school district in Illinois to cross township lines. Wm Kirchhoff served many years on the school board. He also was the drainage commissioner for many years, and worked hard to prevent flooding. He was commissioner of a few drainage districts, for instance the Palatine Drainage District, along with Henry C Freise. As an aside, two of William Kirchhoff's daughters married two Freise brothers, who grew up on a farm in Schaumberg. I have a picture of some of the family in front of the farmhouse (then George's farm) at their 50th wedding anniversary. It has many of their relatives in it, Freise, Zersen, Kirchhoff, Winkleman, Schaefer, and more. In 1917 Wm Kirchhoff and his wife Marie Busse gave or sold their farm to their son George and they moved to Mt Prospect into a home he built there. It was one of the earliest homes, at 109 S Emerson St. (I spent half my life in that house when I was little, I had no idea it had any historic importance). Were Arlington Heights and Mt Prospect called Elk Grove before their present names? I didn't mean to get into all that, I have been researching them lately, and have been reading old newspaper articles. I am working on the genealogy section of my website, and hope to have many newspaper articles there, and I have the picture of their 50th wedding anniversary, etc. I have a huge box of pictures to go through and I find many articles online, which I want to add eventually. I have the picture of the house on George's farm, but it has many relatives in front of it, which is nice. But I was wondering if anyone had a picture of it as it stood, and was used by the VFW before it was torn down? Does anyone have Freise genealogy online? I am going to see Herb Freise in the next few weeks, he is 89 now. If anyone has any questions for him you can let me know and I can ask him, or let me know who you are, and I'll ask him if it is ok to contact him. He doesn't have a computer. In the past, it has always been fine with him. Thank you and I hope this didn't put anyone to sleep! susan voth stier, kirchhoff, busse, freise,,,,,,
