    3. Yesterday Becomes Just a Memory As Family Moves On Source: Daily Herald; Arlington Heights, Ill. Publication date: 2005-08-05 A retiree would like to fish 30 times a year, be free of major responsibilities and live unencumbered, but the thought of giving up childhood possessions and cutting ties with his surroundings leaves him uncomfortable. There is the red cattle truck, the battleship and the barn - all toys his creative father fashioned in wood for him - and the Acorn stove his recently deceased mother used for 70 years, plus many other goods. Jon Bierman related his hesitation recently in the Hoffman Estates home, originally a one-room schoolhouse, in which he grew up. That house, added to as time went on, is the original schoolhouse - according to a jubilee booklet (1852 to 1927) saved by his family - that was on the property of Evangelical Immanuel Congregation of Hanover Township, now called Immanuel United Church of Christ on Old Church Road in Streamwood. Bierman's father, blacksmith Harvey Bierman, moved the house with its original maple floors, remodeling it into a farmhouse at its current location, immediately north of the elder Bierman's business, Bierman Implements Co. There in that Quonset hut - still a landmark on Barrington Road - young Jon worked alongside his dad under an old sign declaring "Better Farming for Happier Living," the motto of Allis-Chalmers. The senior Bierman, an Allis-Chalmers dealer, repaired the tractors and other equipment of nearby farmers, who relied on his expertise as blacksmith, welder and wagonwright to keep their livelihood moving smoothly. A 1942 article in the Elgin Courier News quotes the elder Bierman as saying, "If you can break it, we can fix it." When Bierman and his sister Judy Bierman Bartelt grew up in their home on Barrington Road near the intersection of Higgins Road, the residence had a Palatine address, a Bartlett phone number and was served by the Roselle Fire Protection District. Bierman did the class will during his 1955 graduation from Hoosier Grove Grade School, a one-room schoolhouse on Barrington Road in what was then known as Schaumburg Community Consolidated Elementary School District 54. Bartelt puts a feminine voice to the decision she and her younger sibling Jon made to sell the familiar things of their pasts. "I know others have gone through this. It's like death and taxes," Bartelt said. "It's a low period of my life to stop the routine. I'm going to miss all the things I grew up with." Bierman philosophized, "It's the memories that count." The two recall wading for tadpoles, catching bluegill and splashing in the cool waters of nearby Poplar Creek when they were youngsters, hiding out under old Higgins Road - the road is still there, although overgrown - in the coolness of the cement culvert. "You could hide there, and some kids smoked. Not me. That creek was a magnet to a little boy," remembers Bierman. "You could catch frogs, crabs, pollywogs and bluegill there. Kids today don't have the same opportunities anymore." Using their childlike imaginations, Bartelt and her girlfriends played cowgirls at a "little camp" fashioned from sticks and branches on what is now the site of St. Alexius Hospital. Those lingering uncomfortable thoughts about cutting ties with childhood possessions and the things they called home are still there, but the pair made the decision to donate some mementos to the Hoffman Estates Museum and to hold an estate sale, with proceeds slated for the museum. "It is my desire to donate the historic home to the museum as well," said Bierman. Some of the objects to be sold are old rocking chairs, jars for canning fruit, a wringer washing machine, old trunks, vintage clothing, linens and household items. The sale takes place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Aug. 26 and 27 at the home, 1745 N. Barrington Road, just south of T.G.I. Friday's. "It will feel empty when everything is gone," Bierman said. "It had to be done because 'man is not immortal' and neither is this place." Bierman, who claims he wants to be a professional angler, believes he can survive on his memories because memories count. He likens the experience to reading a good book. During the book's last chapter, you almost know how it will come out. You enjoy reading it, and when you are finished, you start on a new tome. "The only thing is that unlike a book, I can't reread this 'book' again," Bierman said.

    3. Lud Juns, age 81, of Maple Park, IL, passed away Friday, February 17, 2006 at Delnor Community Hospital, Geneva having suffered an apparent heart attack. He was born November 29, 1924, in rural Burlington, IL, the son of Frank and Mary (Gorenz) Juns. He grew up on the family farm and learned early the skill of milking, the feel of the soil and the trustful faith that leads a farmer from season to season. He attended a country school just down the road but in time he left school to help on the farm. In February of 1956, Lud met Dorothy Anne Carr at a dance at Long's Barn, near Kaneville. It was a dance that continued through a lifetime and they were united in marriage on November 17, 1956 at St. Gall Church in Elburn. They made their home on the family dairy farm, near Burlington, where they raised their family and shared the daily toil of farming. In 1981, they sold the dairy herd and Lud and Dorothy moved to rural Maple Park. After he left the dairy, Lud had time to "go to town" and just "window" shop, something that he'd never had time for before. Once a farmer, always a farmer and although he hadn't had cows to milk for 25 years his heart still remembered; was there enough hay for the winter, were the cows in the barn, time for milking. Among his hobbies were collecting arrowheads, antique and toy tractors. He liked to buy an occasional lottery ticket and enjoyed trips to the casino. He was a man with a lucky streak an sometimes he came home a winner. He was a member of the EAA (Experimental Aircraft Association), took flying lessons for a short time and when he was 73, Lud won a flight on a B-17 as an honorary guest of Bob Collins, WGN radio personality. He also had an interest in the history of both World Wars. Lud was a hardworker, meticulous in his planning. He was a quiet man, with a quick wit and a ready smile. His daily presence in the lives of his grandchildren brought joy to him and blessed each of them with a gift that money cannot buy. He was a life long member of S.S. Peter & Paul Church, a longtime member of the Pure Milk Association, the Kane County Farm Bureau and the EAA (Experimental Aircraft Association). He is survived by his wife, Dorothy of Maple Park; his children, Bill (Lori) Juns of Hampshire, IL and Sue Juns of Maple Park, IL; four grandchildren, Tracie (Dan) Klug of Hampshire, Katie (Jason) Kralka of Montgomery, IL, Billy Juns and Thomas Juns, also of Hampshire; two great-grandchildren, whose expected arrival in March and June, Lud eagerly awaited; a sister, Donna Juns of Sycamore, IL; a sister-in-law, Ruth Juns of Elgin, IL; two brothers-in-law, Jerry Carr of MO and Marvin "Jack" Carr of TX; as well as many nieces and nephews and a community of friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; five siblings, Frank Juns Jr., Mary (Len) Schramer, John Juns, Gene Juns and Jean Evelyn Juns; two sisters-in-law, Lois and Mildred Carr. His visitation will be held from 4-8 PM, with a Wake Service at 7 PM, February 20, 2006 at the Conley Funeral Home, 116 W. Pierce St., Elburn, IL. His funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 AM, Tuesday morning, February 21, 2006, at S.S. Peter & Paul Church, Virgil, with an hour of visitation preceding the service. Interment will follow at S.S. Peter & Paul Cemetery, Virgil. A memorial has been established in his name. Checks may be made to the Lud Juns Memorial and mailed in care of P.O. 3. schaumburg review 020906 Still in circulation Longtime library director honored with lifetime achievement award BY KAREN SHOFFNER STAFF WRITER Michael Madden reckons he has managed not one library but several differently sized libraries for nearly 40 years in Schaumburg. When the Schaumburg Township District Library director was hired in 1967, he had one full-time employee and a few part-timers. Madden describes the building on what was known as Library Lane as being "very small." He recalls shoveling snow from the sidewalks because the library didn't have a maintenance staff. A farmer and his wife would come in at night to clean, he said. Madden has seen the library from those decidedly humble beginnings through a handful of expansions on Library Lane to the openings of branch libraries in Hoffman Estates and Hanover Park and the opening in 1998 of the 166,501-square-foot Central Library at Schaumburg and Roselle roads. "I've been the director of three or four different libraries without ever leaving. This has gone from being a relatively tiny library to one of the biggest in the state," he said. Acknowledging his success, the North Suburban Library System is honoring Madden with its Lifetime Achievement Award at the NSLS's annual banquet March 17. In previous years, a committee had chosen the Lifetime Achievement Award winner from among several nominations. This year, said Sarah Long, NSLS director, the nominations were open for all NSLS members to vote on. "What he has done in terms of his own leadership is incredible. He's active on the state and national levels. His credentials are impeccable," Long said. Tim Jarzemsky, a former Schaumburg library employee and currently director of the Bloomingdale Public Library, was eager to talk about Madden and his influence on him. "The one thing I try to emulate is that he identifies the talents of people who work for him and lets them do projects. It's sort of sink or swim. He gave me responsibilities at the different branch libraries. He gave myself and the other middle managers a lot of responsibilities," Jarzemsky said. A testament to Madden's knack for identifying and nurturing employees' talents is the number of former employees who have gone on to be library directors. In addition to Jarzemsky, they are: David Ruff at the Rolling Meadows Public Library, Patricia Hogan at the Poplar Creek Public Library District, Todd Morning at the Bartlett Public Library, and Dawn Bussey at the River Forest Public Library. Madden became Schaumburg's library director almost by chance. Indeed, he fell into library science while he was working as a teacher. To become certified as an English teacher in the Chicago Public School system then, you had to take a library science class, he said. He took it on Saturdays at the University of Chicago. One Saturday, the teacher asked him after class if he had thought of becoming a librarian. Madden thought about it and decided to give it a try. He enrolled at the graduate library school at the University of Chicago. He didn't particularly care for his first job at a high school. He loved his next job as a professional assistant at the American Library Association in Chicago. In 1967, Madden saw an advertisement for college teachers at Harper College, which operated out of Elk Grove High School then. He went for the interview. The chairman of the English department at Harper, who was also on Schaumburg's library board, told Madden that the board would be conducting interviews for the library director position on the following night. He asked if Madden wanted to be interviewed. Madden's wife said it wouldn't hurt to do the interview. So the next night Madden drove out to Schaumburg from the city and was interviewed. "They offered me this job that night. I was taken aback by it," he said. Madden's wife wanted to know where Schaumburg was. "She'd never heard of it. This was before Woodfield," he said. He decided to take the job because he thought it would look good on his résumé to be the director of what he considered a country library. "I commuted here for two years from the city. It was easy. Everybody else was going the other way," he said. To many people who live and work in Schaumburg now, the Schaumburg that Madden encountered in 1967 would be unrecognizable. "There was nowhere to eat lunch, really. You had to bring your lunch. There was a bar run by Mrs. Lengl. She'd make a sandwich for you. There was also a little storefront chicken place and that was it. Our maintenance man's sons could play baseball on Golf Road at night. There were so few cars then," Madden said. The Maddens moved to Schaumburg two years into his tenure as director. In 1968, the lower level of the library was finished and the children's department opened. The 1970s brought tremendous growth to the Schaumburg area and the expansion of the Central Library building was completed in 1972. Also, in the 1970s, the first branch library opened in Hoffman Estates. Libraries and how they are run have changed a great deal during the time Madden has been Schaumburg's library director. "Everything is heavily computerized. The growth of audio-visual materials is just staggering. Back then you had long-playing records and 8 mm materials because 16 mm was outrageously expensive. And you didn't have all the home entertainment things that you have now," he said. He noted that the community itself is far more diverse today, not just racially and ethnically, but also economically and with regards to the age of the population. "Back then, the community was very much geared to young families. There wasn't a big age spread," he said. In the 1970s, suburban libraries began developing specialty collections. Schaumburg chose to develop a business collection. Today, it is widely known as one of the best business reference collections around. The library also has far more ESL materials and items in languages such as Polish, Spanish and Korean in its collection. The demand for meeting rooms has also skyrocketed, Madden said, and librarians are doing more training, particularly computer training, for patrons. Madden said he hasn't given any thought to retiring from the Schaumburg library, but whenever he does retire from the library, he'll keep busy. "I'm probably the type of person who'll never completely retire. As long as I'm in good health, I'll keep working," he said. Jarzemsky said that when Madden does retire, he'll leave behind some "tough shoes to fill." Karen Shoffner
