    3. I know you know the Freise name, my family and I just had lunch with Herb Freise a few weeks ago. He is 89 now, and grew up on his father's farm there. I love to hear the stories about the old days. He lives in Seattle now, and we don't live too far. He was my dad's first cousin, so my first cousin once removed I guess. Lately I was gathering some information on my great-grandfather William Kirchhoff. I was surprised, he really did quite a bit for the town of Mt Prospect. He and William Busse the commissioner, started the public school and donated the land and some of the money towards it. Wm Busse (also a relative) donated land for the Lutheran Church in Mt Prospect also, St Paul Lutheran Church, (which I had attended). Wm Kirchhoff was on the public school board for about 40 years, and was drainage commissioner for 30 years or so. He bought one of the first homes in downtown Mt Prospect in 1917. I practically grew up in that house, I didn't know it was historical. His youngest child was my grandmother, Laura Kirchhoff Stier. William Kirchhoff had a farm which he inherited from his father, William Kirchhoff (August Wilhelm Kirchhoff) born in Germany in 1822). This was one of the original farms in Arlington Heights. I put some of the genealogy, along with pictures and newspaper clippings, on rootsweb. There is an obituary of "grandma Kirchhoff" from 1904 there, she was Sophie Prellberg Kirchhoff. When William Kirchhoff retired to go live in the town of Mt Prospect, he broke up his farm into 3-100 acre parcels, his son George had the parcel with the original home on it. When I was young, in the early 1960's, this home was used by the VFW for meetings etc. Boy, I wish it had never been torn down! There is an article on how the last name really is spelled with 2 H's not 1 H. There is a picture of the 50th wedding reunion of William Kirchhoff, and his wife Marie Busse Kirchhoff in front of the original homestead. Lots of other family members are in the picture, including Zersen's, Freise's, Schaefer's, and many more. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~kirchhoff/50thwedding2.pdf There also is a 50th wedding anniversary picture of Henry Busse and Mary Behrens Busse, taken 99 years ago in 1907. There are many Busse's, Kirchhoffs, Freise's, Schwake's, Behren's and more. I have a pretty big box full of pictures I'll try to add, and http://newspaperarchive.com was very helpful too. My grandmother is just a child in this picture, and Henry was her grandfather. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~davev/henrybusse50th.html btw, has anyone heard of a German card game called zolo or something? 3. Turrets, Tornadoes and Tombstones The Great Schaumburg Digital Scavenger Hunt The village of Schaumburg is celebrating its 50th anniversary, and the Schaumburg Township District Library is getting in on the act by combining something old and something new (nothing borrowed, nothing blue). In honor of this great event, the library invites patrons of all ages to go online for a trip back in time. Come and join the The Great Schaumburg Digital Scavenger Hunt! By using the library's website, you'll be lead through a fascinating maze of village history as you search for answers in your endeavor to win the grand prize. The scavenger hunt will run March 1 through April 30, with forms available online or within the library at the Adult and Youth Services Reference Desks, as well as in the lobby and at the branch libraries. Forms will also be available in the April/May Program Guide which will be mailed to residents of Schaumburg Township. Completed hunt forms will be accepted until the library closes on April 30. There are two ways to join the hunt. You can go to the library's website at www.stdl.org <http://www.stdl.org/> and click on "Turrets, Tornadoes and Tombstones." Read the instructions, then click on "Let the Hunt Begin." You'll be connected to both the scavenger hunt contest form and a link to the library's Local History Digital Archive. Use the archive to answer the questions. Or...you may pick up a scavenger hunt form within the library, then go to the library's website and click on the "Local History" button to access the digital archive. Adults, ages 19 and up, who answer the scavenger hunt correctly will be entered into a drawing for a grand prize basket that includes two tickets to the 2006 New Year's Eve Anniversary Ball at Schaumburg's Convention Center. Five other prize baskets will be awarded as well. Youth, ages 5-18, who answer the scavenger hunt correctly, will be entered into a drawing for a grand prize basket that includes a $50 Borders gift certificate. Five other prize baskets will be awarded as well. Here's a few tips to bring you closer to that Grand Prize basket. When searching the digital archives, you can type in a keyword or choose "browse." When searching by keyword, be sure to search both documents and photos. Clicking on the description of a photo or document will bring it up. Clicking on the text icon to the left of the photo description will bring up further information. Quite often, this is where answers can be found. When searching through a document, be sure to use the binoculars icon to narrow your results. Questions? Call the Reference Desk at (847) 923-3322. They won't give you the answers, but they can assist you with using the digital archives. Good luck, and let the hunt begin! <html> <style> h4 {color: "#006600"} b {font-size: 15px} </style> <br> <h4>Schaumburg Township District Library voted one of Chicago's "101 Best and Brightest Companies to Work For."</h4> </html>

    1. Schaumburg 50th Anniversary
    2. Larry Nerge
    3. sch review 03 09 06 North and west ... the best Reunion party officially kicks off 50th anniversary celebration BY MATT KIEFER STAFF WRITER Schaumburg marked its 50th anniversary Tuesday night by reflecting on its roots as a small farming community and looking forward to big plans for the future. About 400 members of the Schaumburg community were on hand for "50 Years ... A Reunion" held at the Prairie Center for the Arts. The event was held in commemoration of March 7, 1956, when newly sworn Village President Louis Redeker, six trustees and the village clerk signed the incorporation papers that brought Schaumburg into existence. The first 50 years of the village's history were brought to life Tuesday evening by artifacts on display in the Prairie Center lobby, including a 1947 atlas of the area that is now Schaumburg, pictures of St. Peter Lutheran Church and other local landmarks, along with countless other pieces of the past. In the auditorium, students from Schaumburg High School presented a detailed chronology of the community, starting with its 1956 incorporation as a 2-square-mile farming town with 156 residents. "It's hard to believe it would emerge into what it has today," remarked Schaumburg High School student Luke Liu. The screening of a video oral history, "The Early Years," edited by Jack Netter, featured interviews of Schaumburg residents who lived here when the area was farmland as far as the eye could see. Some residents recalled when it was a busy day to see five cars traveling up and down Roselle Road, while others remember when Plum Grove Road was one lane, and drivers would have to pull over onto the shoulder to let oncoming cars pass. Still others recounted that land could be purchased out for $1.25 an acre, or how some early residents were kept awake at night by howling wolves climbing onto the roofs of their homes. Other speakers that evening reflected on the evolution of Olde Schaumburg Center at Schaumburg and Roselle roads, where the corner was once home to a feed shop, a general store, a few taverns and a gas station. There were memories of former Village Trustee Herman Winkelhake, a farmer who served on the board from 1956 to 1967, who would arrive at Village Board meetings late during summer months because he had to milk his cows at sunset. A panel discussion in the auditorium included LaVonne Thies Presley, who grew up on a family farm and is involved with the local historical society; Russ Parker, who served on the Plan Commission and the Zoning Board of Appeals during the years of Woodfield development and other developmental growth; and Jack Siegel, the first and only village attorney, who successfully upheld Schaumburg's right to incorporate during a three-day trial in 1960. "It is apparent that this community is just beginning to dream of the potential that we have here," Siegel observed during the discussion. Local musician Dan Marcotte presented a lighthearted music video featuring a song he wrote about the village. By the end of the song, the audience was singing along with the chorus: "Schaumburg, Schaumburg, Schaumburg north and west ... Schaumburg, Schaumburg, Schaumburg is the best." Amidst champagne toasts and birthday cake, with the Schaumburg Youth Symphony Orchestra playing in the background, guests also looked forward to the future -- the opening of the Schaumburg Convention Center this summer, the STAR Line train service headed this way and the remaining 50th anniversary celebrations taking place over the course of the year. On March 11, the celebration will continue with the program, "Our Stories, Our History Storytelling" at the Prairie Center. Other 50th anniversary-themed events this year include the Schaumburg Youth Orchestra Americana Concert at the Prairie Center on April 9; the Prairie Arts Festival May 27 and 28 at Atcher Municipal Center; the Music Series at Town Square this summer; the Schaumburg Convention Center grand opening in July; the Images of Schaumburg Historic Photo Display at the Schaumburg Township Building in July and August, and at the Schaumburg Township District Library in October; Septemberfest on Sept. 2, 3 and 4; the Fire Station/Public Safety Memorial Dedication Sept. 19; the Holiday Tree Lighting on Nov. 24 and Christkindlesmarkt on Nov. 25 and 26; and the Anniversary Ball co-sponsored with Elk Grove Village on Dec. 31 at the Schaumburg Convention Center.
