Subject: My very own RECOLLECTIONS - 13/100 1. WORLD WAR I -Do you remember someone from your family being in World War I, stories about his/her efforts, live upon return, have you uniforms, medals, photos, do you remember hearing stories about Armistice Day, was there anyone you knew killed in this war, tell a bit about them, most especially, their full names and those of the parents if you know them, did you have a job during this time and what was it that you did, how did you feel about working during the war. (If you cannot address this war period, write about WWII) 2. Other than in school for a class assignment, when have you ever had to speak in public? (or perform?) - when and where was this, how was it that you were chosen, what was your topic, did you need a long time to prepare or was the material well known, after you were finished, did you feel as if you did a good job, was it a topic that was new to you or in your 'field', was the audience a large/small group, was your presentation as an individual or as a group, what was the best advice you received prior to your presentation. 3. SHOES - go and count, exactly how many shoes do you have in your closet, can you wear them all, or are you saving them, pick one of the oddest pair you have and talk about the instance where you bought them and then wore them, what do you like about them/or dislike now, (these are now immortalized, so save them!) are you particular about the quality of your shoe or does it depend on how long you will be wearing them, how do you care for your shoes, do you regularly polish them or have them polished, have you ever had your shoes polished by another, where was this, and why did you feel you HAD to have them polished at this time, what colors of polish do you have in your collection, can you write a procedure about how to polish a shoe... from set up through clean up and, where did you learn to polish a shoe? Remember...... Write as you speak.... Be yourself.... Write liberally...... Do not worry about technique.... It is the THOUGHT that counts - or thoughts! Write as if it might be the LAST time you can address the question... 183/184 0 0
St. Johannes Cemetery Alliance (SJCA) News 22 September 2003 In recognition of the sacredness of St. Johannes Cemetery, and the ongoing struggle with the City of Chicago to prevent its desecration, a "March to St. Johannes" and Reconsecration Service of Worship was held yesterday. 21 September. For all of you who could not participate in that time of worship together (and for all of you who could), I have uploaded several pictures of the event. To do so, though, in order to get an active link our to everyone, I had to put them on a make shift home page of mine. Therefore, to get there follow the steps below: Click on http://home.netcom.com/~mkirchhoff/index.html Ignore all the other junk and go right to and click on the link entitled: The Fight To Save St. Johannes Cemetery This will take you to page 1 Links to pages 2, 3, and 4 are all located on the bottom of the photo pages. (No comments about the quality of the pictures. I did the best I could. Unless each member on the list wants to send me a check for $30.00, then I would be shooting with darn-near professional equipment next time. Just kidding folks - about the checks) Enjoy Michael ________________________________________ Michael Martens Kirchhoff, Sr. [email protected] St. Johannes Cemetery Committee Member

Today and yesterday there have been steadily increasing amounts of email passing thru my inbox with MSN or Microsoft or Security or Mail Delivery advisories... all with attachments and all running about 156KB... If they get past your virus checkers or other junk mail filters, do not even t-h-i-n-k about opening them! junk them and then delete/empty that junk folder just as fast as you can.... without a doubt it contains a buggie... do not, whatever you do let your curiosity get the better of you.... pay special attention to any email you get over 49kb.... especially if you are not expecting it... junk them and get on with your day,; keep your machine and the machines of your contacts safe. valentine
Dr Bob, thank you for this query.... the Library is indeed interested in information from people on the list but we have to remember that they are singular and we are PLURAL so we have to deal with a funnel effect... perhaps this will be a good guide for you and others.... Their preference (I have checked into this already at an earlier time) on compiled information regarding genealogy, is to take it on paper.... there is a concern about electronic material being taken from their website and then republished on other genealogy forums - for fee and not - and perhaps diluting the accuracy of the material as well as taking control of it from them (and you) . In this 'paper' version, you would only have to 'recall' it and they could remove the book (or books which they may have reproduced to act as backup). There are other concerns too..... does your material show people that are still living, personal information inside the 1930 federal rule, addresses and data of minor children - especially those outside of YOUR immediate family - etc etc The library is really not geared up to handle all the different genealogy softwares that exist and the 'modifications' that might need to be done on gedcoms once they are downloaded. They are very much geared up to take a document, clearly page numbered, clearly titled, authored and dated and ready to catalog, just as if it was a published book. A lot of time and effort does go into this...and many folks FORGET that gedcoms are the INFO not the extraneous BOOK components... gee wouldn't you like to put in a page for a dedication?. I have, myself, seen examples of information sent which needs a lot of 'PUBLISHER' work before the material could ever be put on a shelf... The library is just not prepared to do the work of a publisher. So, if the only thing YOUR book needs is a verbatim printing off a CD, then and only then do I think they would take it... Ideally in a WORD format so that staff could if they had to, make minor adjustments. BEST is via a CD and the US Mail, so that they have YOUR disk from YOU which will give them (in effect) a release to use the material and which also gives them an archival copy. DO not mix things on the CD... ONE book per CD so that the single CD can be archived correctly.... In addition, believe they would like to have a letter releasing the material from you to them for their Illinois Collection; the address below. They would then, likely print out the document and catalog it and on the shelf it would be for others to reference. I do not believe that these documents will be candidates for circulation. However, if the material is a single photo or a document, I know that they will take that as a scanned document but only if there is identification and dating, etc along with the photo... (one email per document, so that each email can be handled individually and perhaps by different people, depending on the content). LIBRARY: I will check and report on the eaddy to use for this... i suspect that there is one similar to.... [email protected] but i am not quite sure what the exact addy is... i will check and post.... Subject: My very own RECOLLECTIONS - 10/100 1. With the Hurricane ISABEL upon (past) us, relate a story of a storm (wind, rain, snow, tornado, typhoon, hurrican, tropical storm) which you experienced. -when and where was it, were you in danger or merely disrupted, how did it change your day, were you in your normal environment at the time or traveling, were you prepared/unprepared, if this occurred when you were young, would your feelings about it be changed now that you are an adult. 2. When was a television first introduced to your family group? -color or black and white, what was the brand name, what were some of the shows you watched, the time of day you regularly watched, any preliminary tasks before you watched it (like to generate electricity?), who was usually with you, how did you receive the signal, what was your reception like, did you view it as an exciting invention or as entertainment, did you believe that it would become as important in our daily lives as it has, do you think that too much television for children is bad for them and why, what have you done about this in your family, do you think it is better to see something on television or read about it in the newspapers, when was the first time YOU purchased your own television? What is the single most important thing you viewed in your lifetime on television? 3. TOOTH FAIRY -did you remember that there was a visit, what kind of treats did you receive, did you get money. were you sad that your tooth was GONE, how long was it until you DID NOT BELIEVE, did you perpetuate the stories to your own children, and grandchildren, how did you 'transfer' the tooth to the fairy, why do you think this custom started, have you found that the tooth has reappeared in your mother's collection? (Have you checked google.com on 'your' storm or 'most important television image" for adding some documentation to your story -or for some pictures of that time?) Remember...... Yes - I knew Dorthy Kobusch Thiemann and her husbamd George very well. Dororthy was a sister of my grandfather. The last time I saw George was 1995 and Dorothy a couple of years later. I have seen their daughter this month and will be seeing her again in October. I also have a major autobiography that Dorothy wrote a couple of years ago. Hallo liebe Listenteilnehmer, wer Ahnen unter dem Namen Hardenberg aus Einbeck hat, kann eine Stammtafel haben - sie stammt aus dem Buch: Johann Wolf, Geschichte des Geschlechts von Hardenberg, 1823. Habe sie für mich und Klaus (Riecken) abgescannt. Versand per E-Mail als *.pdf-Datei. Viele Grüße aus Hannover Martin www.arendi.de

Subject: My very own RECOLLECTIONS - 9/100 1. DOCTOR -first visit or early visits to a Doctor or visit BY the doctor, when did this happen, for what illness, what was his/her office like, what was his nurse like, his dress, her dress-hat, were you afraid of the doctor, were your parents comfortable with doctors, did you ever see your doctor OUTSIDE of his office and what was he like then, 2. DENTIST -what was that first visit like, for what purpose, do you still think of that time when you now visit the dentist, do you go to the same dentist most of the time or do you keep changing dentists, what were our actions about taking care of your teeth as a child, young adult and now, what is the ABSOLUTE worse thing about going to the dentist. do you think that things have gotten better over the years. 3. SLEEPWALK -have you ever walked while sleeping, walked FAR, woken up and felt HOW, did anyone KNOW that you were walking? Remember...... Write as you speak.... Be yourself.... Write liberally...... Do not worry about technique.... It is the THOUGHT that counts - or thoughts! Write as if it might be the LAST time you can address the question... 42 43 000
I support the SJCA objectives wholeheartedly. My gg-grandfather Johann Heinrich Kobusch rests at St Johannes (burial July 6, 1901). If I recall correctly, his resting place is near the road. Unfortunately, I will be unable to make the trip from western Illinois on the 21st to show my support. My genealogical research interests are Kobusch, Hallenberg, Thiemann Dr. Bob Grenier Augustana College RockIsland
