There were trailers . I did not look all that close at the time. They may have been abandoned ,maybe not. I believe they were about three quarters of the way from A.H. road. (closer to 53) The spot is probably under water now. I took up metal detecting some years after that and thought it might be worth looking for but my knees went bad and I had to give up that idea. The "towers" you see might have something to do with the military base that was south of the hospital. Contact Arlington Heights Historical Society. They did taped interviews with service people during the bicentenial. I do know at one time there were POWS there. Bonnie __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? I will have to check my Great Uncle Irving Kollings photos again next time I am in AH. I believe he had some photos of this site...we were trying to figure out what it was this past weekend...looked like huge circular fitted openings in the ground and at first I thought it to be a huge sewer project but these openings were facing upwards! He grew up on South State and would have been interested in the NIKE site as his grandparents house (at which he later lived as a young man at 22 South State (built 1869 by Conrad Kolling and son John after moving from SCHAUMBURG) was considered to be relocated across from this site when State was again widened and it was voted down due to concern of that area becoming a slum area. 1. There was a NIKE site south of NW Community Hospital. It had originally been a truck farmer's land, but in the 1950s (?) the government installed the silos for missles. This the towers might have been part of that complex. 2. think there was a tavern/dance hall in that location. It might have been mentioned in one of the interviews. Leona Boergener Schmahl and her friends went there with their boyfriends to dance. She said that it was owned by Mrs. Wytrykus - that would have been in the 1940s. There was a bar in the front and dance hall in the back. A group of men would bring their musical instruments such as concertinas and accordions, etc. to play for the dances. It was known as the Elk Grove Inn at that time. There was a good size parking lot and some other buildings. Might have had a mobile home???? Not sure about that. ltp
1 I am looking at some old aerials.. I see to the south of North west community hospital, five towers that look like they are some type of radar towers....miniature towers resembling star observatory towers.... only smaller... these would be about the size of contemporary water towers...this is in 1965 has anyone any information......? 2 I am also looking at another phot of 1965 in which half way between rohlwing road and arlington heights road on the south side of higgins is a little community.... perhaps trailers or a yard where trailers were parked... (this no longer exists - that I know) can anyone tell me about it.....I believe that the ned brown lake is there now......
we have at present 63 members on LIST and 19 on Digest.... A whopping 82 members... ! actually, a pretty darn good figure for a locale list...... and i know that each of you have photos of those elders in your family....so, A REQUEST: one scan from each of you of the oldest elderS ~or~ the most prized old family photo in your possession.... (naturally schaumburg related - perhaps of the farmplace, a group pic in front of the house/barns.......) WITH full documentation regarding full names, birth/death years, and occasion..... FOR: HYPERION at STDL, so that we can ALL see it..... WHERE TO SEND the photo and details: [email protected] WHAT TO DO IF YOU HAVE NO SCANNER: go to your local library.... take the photo with you (unframed) take an empty disk with you, scan it with their scanner, and then at home, send a copy to [email protected] WHY: because we actually have very little of the old. Try as we might, we cannot recreate the old without the help of all. Most of the buildings are gone, few pictures of people remain, many of the elders who we might have been able to speak with are gone, or gone from the area, but YOU all are here and have many things at your disposal and can do many things from the comfort of your homes (thanks to the internet and computers and scanners...) and it is a way to help others without a lot of heavy research on your part.... can ya please send in something of your family group?
