Record Number: 19460415dn103 1994-02-11 Chicago Tribune (IL) EULOGY FOR MAYOR ATCHER PLANNED SUNDAY AT CHURCH Martha Russis. Edition: Chicago Tribune Robert Atcher, the late Schaumburg mayor credited with guiding the village from its farmland beginnings into a modern northwest suburb, will be memorialized Sunday at 5 p.m. at St. Matthew Catholic Church, 1001 E. Schaumburg Rd. Atcher was village president from 1959 to 1975. He died last October in his Kentucky home at the age of 79 after a long bout with cancer. His vision and persuasive efforts created some of the facilities that are Schaumburg's trademarks today, such as Woodfield Mall, Prairie Center for the Arts and the Spring Valley Nature Sanctuary. With his tradmark guitar and Stetson cowboy hat, Atcher also won recognition as a country music star and was the master of ceremonies for the "National Barn Dance" television show. The former mayor will be eulogized by Village President Al Larson, village attorney Jack Siegel and longtime friend and Schaumburg resident Helen Slingerland. Village officials plan to dedicate the municipal complex to Atcher later. At Sunday's service, his wife, Maggie, will be presented a plaque that will hang at the village hall bearing the inscription: "Not many people can change the course of history and profoundly touch the lives of future generations. Builders of cities can do that. Robert O. Atcher was such a man and for that he will be remembered." Copyright 1994, Chicago Tribune. Record Number: 19940211OB9402110291 1993-11-01 Chicago Tribune (IL) ROBERT O. ATCHER; LED GROWTH OF SCHAUMBURG By Janan Hanna, Tribune Staff Writer. Edition: Chicago Tribune Robert O. Atcher, a singing cowboy turned politician who led Schaumburg's growth from a sparsely populated farming community in the 1950s to a major metropolis, died Saturday in his home in a suburb of Louisville. He was 79. Mr. Atcher, the Schaumburg village president from 1959 to 1975, was widely regarded as a political visionary who realized that the northwest suburbs had the potential to become a major regional center. Born in Kentucky and raised on a North Dakota horse farm, Mr. Atcher moved to the Chicago area in the 1930s to launch a radio career as a country singer. He became widely known as a radio performer, and was seen on WGN-TV as the emcee of the "National Barn Dance" variety show. His trademark, besides his guitar, was horses. Mr. Atcher grew up breaking mustangs and was quick to point out that he was a "real cowboy." The Atchers were one of the first families to settle in Schaumburg in 1954. With expansion plans for the Northwest Tollway in the works, Mr. Atcher recognized that Schaumburg could become a major commercial, industrial and residential center in northern Illinois. He founded a planning commission in 1954, and with nine other pioneers, led Schaumburg to its incorporation in 1956. "He was a true visionary," said Schaumburg Village President Al Larson. He is survived by his wife, Marguerite; two daughters, Mary Christopher and Cecily Ann; and a son, Robert W. Services will be held Tuesday in Louisville. Mr. Atcher will be buried at 11 a.m. Thursday in St. Michael the Archangel Cemetery, Palatine. Arrangements are being handled by Ahlgrim & Sons Funeral Home in Schaumburg. 3. obits - just some info each weekend but usually Sunday, you will notice that I send the previous week's obits to the list. these are from the daily herald and lately the courier news in elgin I do this while listening to charles and george on tv ... ... this is the criteria that I use as I clip them and send them. (just in case you are wondering, "WHY is valentine sending THIS? ") first I scan for surnames I recognize as local - yep, I bet I missa bunch, but I try..regardless of age then I scan for where they were born AND if over 80 years old. I cant do contemporary folks because of the hospitals that now exist in palatine, hoffman and elk grove.. then I scan for business or govt names that might indicate their involvement in these three general areas. I do include des plaines, elgin and roselle in this because our townships did business in these areas... then if the service/burial is at st peters schaumburg, I include it, regardless of age.. if I get hits on any of these, then I send them to the lists of import.. the schaumburg list gets those from out of the township lines - like elgin, roselle etc.. since these obits that I send are part of the legacy.com system, for thirty days only, you could visit legacy.com and see the memory books that might be signed. if these families are part of yours, then these short-lived books might be of value to your search.. you have only 30 days to check the guest books... YOU all can add to these obits with those obits from YOUR own collections. type them up and send them to the list. the older the better. but do give dates and paper name.. YOUR entry might be just the clue that others are looking for. valentine

    2. .... valentine53179
    3. from an article in Dick Eastman's newsletter. -----------------forwarded message------------------- One of the top stories in 2003 in this newsletter was the arrest of Elias Abodeely, a 23-year-old in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, who ran a string of pseudo genealogy sites. His arrest didn't seem to deter him: 2004 has started off with a rash of the same advertising. For those who missed it, let's briefly recap this scam. The sites involved included GenSeeker.com, GenSeekers.com, genealogydevelopments.com, familydiscovery.com, genealogyfinders.net, genlocator.com, genealogy-express.com, and probably many others. Abodeely would send out spam mail from one site, then collect money until the complaints mounted, and his site eventually would be shut down by the hosting service. A week or two later he would appear with a new name and a new site on a different hosting service conducting essentially the same business. To access his sites, the hapless buyer paid $40 to $60 (the exact amount varied from time to time). None of these sites contained any genealogy information; they simply had pointers to free sites where information could be found. In other words, the buyer paid $40 to $60 to access something that was already available free of charge. Abodeely eventually ran into lots of legal difficulties. On August 1, 2003, he was arrested in Cedar Rapids, Iowa on felony charges of first-degree theft, money laundering, and ongoing criminal activity. He was released later that day, and a court appearance on those charges still has not yet been scheduled. You can read about Abodeely's arrest in my newsletter at: http://www.eogn.com/archives/news0331.htm, in the Des Moines register at http://www.dmregister.com/news/stories/c4788998/21905604.html and at http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&q=elias+abodeely+arrested&btnG=Google+Search. His arrest did not slow Abodeely very much. A month later he appeared selling "self-renewing" genealogy CD-ROM disks under the name GenealogyTechs.com. That site actually was registered to Andrew Abodeely. I obtained one of these "self-renewing" genealogy CD-ROM disks and wrote about it in detail in the September 29, 2003 Plus Edition of this newsletter. GenealogyTechs.com was shut down the day after my article was published. Things have been quiet for the past three months, but on January 2, 2004, a number of newsletter readers reported receiving some fishy-looking spam mail messages. In fact, the messages appear to be word-for-word the same as the old ads for "self-renewing" genealogy CD-ROM disks sent earlier from GenealogyTechs.com - except that the new ads are coming from GenealogyTechs.net. That's right: the only difference is the previously shut down dot-COM is now replaced by a newly-registered dot-NET. A quick check of the WHOIS information shows that Genealogytechs.net is registered to the same address as GenealogyTechs.com: 1013 Agate Street, Suite B, San Diego, CA 92109, the business address of Andrew Abodeely. That is also the same address that ships the worthless "self-renewing" genealogy CD-ROM disks. In short, the Abodeelys seem to have reappeared after a three-month hiatus. Elias Abodeely's earlier arrest for felonies doesn't seem to have fazed either of the Abodeelys at all. At the time these words are being written, http://www.genealogytechs.net is up and running and looks almost identical to the previously shut down http://www.genealogytechs.com. It is also interesting to note that the new site is like the old one in several respects, especially in that it cannot handle credit cards. Instead, the buyer is suckered into paying by an "e-check" that extracts money directly from the buyer's checking account with no credit card involved. Beware! This is one method by which the earlier sites allegedly extracted money time and again from a buyer's checking accounts! Several buyers thought they paid once but, after examining their end-of-month checking account statements, found that they had been charged time and again without permission. That is one of the actions that led to Elias Abodeely's arrest. Why would a company not offer payment by credit card? That is extremely rare in the online world. The answer is simple: the owner's credit rating is so poor that he cannot obtain the merchant account required to be able to accept credit cards. In this case, he cannot even obtain a PayPal account, which is easy for mostpeople to obtain. No credit card service will give a merchant account to someone awaiting trial on charges of money laundering by using credit cards! Without access to a credit card merchant account, the Web site owner is forced to resort to online checks, a risky method for any buyer considering an online purchase. Remember that purchases made online with VISA, MasterCard or American Express are fully insured against fraud by the credit card companies. If you get "ripped off" by a shady merchant when using a credit card, the credit card companies will immediately refund all of your money and then will pursue resolution with the merchant. PayPal transactions are also fully insured in the same manner. However, if you pay by check, you have no such protection. That is true both for paper checks as well as for "e-checks." You receive only whatever insurance your local bank provides. Sadly, most banks provide no protection at all against fraudulent purchases made with a check or with a debit card. Send a check to a con artist? You lose. Any time you see a Web site offering something for sale and not accepting credit cards, ask yourself, "Why does this merchant not accept credit cards? Not even via PayPal?" Most of the time, it is because that merchant has severe financial problems. Then ask yourself if you really want to do business with such a merchant. If you receive a spam mail from GenealogyTechs.net or any similar-sounding scam, please forward it to the Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Police Department's Financial Crimes Division at [email protected] I suspect they have an interest in the "business activities" of this person, who is awaiting a court appearance after being arrested by that department. Please feel free to also enclose a copy of this article. You can read more about the Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Police Department's Financial Crimes Division at http://www.cedar-rapids.org/police/financial_crimes.asp. Please feel free to also forward this article to other genealogists, newsgroups, mailing lists, and anywhere else you feel is appropriate.

    2. .... valentine53179
    3. from creative projects at this website... an author not noted... I just happened upon it... I could not get the link to the actual article....... http://www.shopping.hp.com/cgi-bin/hpdirect/shopping/scripts/product_detail/product_detail_view.jsp?product_code=Q3112A%23A2L&aoid=16375&script_name=product.cgi article 1: gathering family history information To understand who we are as individuals, it is important to understand family history. In recent years, the Internet has made it easier than ever to learn about one's origins. Gaining access to family records is now just a mouse click away. This article will help you gather everything you need to start documenting your family's story. Then stay tuned for the rest of our genealogy series, where we'll take you step by step through the research process. collecting family memories Your journey starts with what's already around you. There are clues everywhere. Here are the first three things you'll want to do: 1.. look at family keepsakes and memorabilia There is information all around you. Pour over photo albums, old scrapbooks, family bibles, letters, important papers (wills, deeds, etc.), book inscriptions, jewelry, quilts, and even furniture. Some scratched initials and a scrawled date on the bottom of a piece of furniture may just lead to a monumental discovery. Collect everything that seems important - everything! 2.. record personal memories and knowledge Start by collecting all the basic information that you already know about your close relatives: full names, dates and places of births, marriages, deaths, and other major family events. Work backward, beginning with your parents, then grandparents, and so on, as far back as you can remember. You can check the facts later. 3.. conduct family interviews Ask your family members for any information they can remember. If you can't talk to them directly, call or write them. It's smart to prepare questions in advance to help you stay organized and on track. And talk to as many people as possible - even close friends of the family can be a great source of info. Any information you can get from family members equals less research on your part. Names and dates are crucial. Spouse names, maiden names, sibling names--record them all. Include dates, places, and any other details. Always confirm information. For example, even if you're absolutely sure what year your great-grandmother passed away, why not confirm it in the Social Security Death Index, http://ssdi.genealogy.rootsweb.com/. You may discover other information that you don't have, like her parents' names or places of birth. Sometimes, death records even include employment or military history. When interviewing people, let them ramble. That's when you¿ll get the best stories. Bring props, photos, anything to trigger memories. Your family will love reminiscing, so don't be bashful-be respectfully nosy. After you've recorded the memories, share a transcript with the interviewee to verify information. Then share it with everyone in the family - and jog more memories loose! locating ancestors online The Internet provides easy access to records, lists, and indexes. The kind of information that used to be hidden away on microfilm in library basements is now at your fingertips. These are the kinds of things you're looking for: a.. Death, birth, immigration, marriage records b.. Military indexes c.. Census reports d.. Court transcripts and reports e.. Local records and family registries f.. Old telephone directories The quality and quantity of information available on the Internet is improving every day. There are over 100,000 genealogy sites out there, not to mention newsgroups, genealogy search engines, databases, indexes, and digital libraries. Here is a sampling of the kind of information that's available to you, including some of the most widely respected sites. a.. The Family History Library (www.familysearch.org) is the largest collection of family history in the world, with over two million rolls of microfilmed records. They've also established online access to their major computer database - FamilySearch. The online version includes the International Genealogical Index, an Ancestral File, a Family History Library Catalog, and many genealogy-related websites from around the world. b.. The Ellis Island Records Site (http://www.ellisislandrecords.org) is an amazing (and free!) resource, this site allows you to search for Ellis Island immigration records. You can even view online family scrapbooks. c.. Genealogy (www.genealogy.com) is a great place to start your research. They have plenty of links, loads of research tools, plus a wonderful learning center jam-packed with useful how-to information. d.. Lineages Website (www.lineages.com) This is a major genealogical reference library and resource center, built and maintained by professional genealogists. It provides free access to records databases and lots of other resources. Check out "Genealogy for Beginners" guide, complete with forms and checklists. e.. The U.S. Army Military History Institute, http://carlisle-www.army.mil/usamhi/, collects, organizes, preserves, and makes available over nine million source materials on American military history to the defense community, researchers, and scholars. finding previously completed research Check for research about your family that has already been compiled, including family and local histories, genealogies, articles, and collections of family papers. Also, try to connect with other family members who are researching your lineage. Join a genealogical society. Collaborating with others makes it easier and more fun, and you can share resources and techniques. Many societies even build research facilities and invite experts to speak. organizing the information As you progress in your research, you'll need to create a larger system for organizing all the photocopies, transcripts, and photos, etc. Some people prefer filing cabinets, while others scan everything into a PC for the ultimate online family database. But for those just starting out, the following collection folder is a good way to begin gathering information. conclusion Researching your family history can be as large or small a project as you want it to be. It depends on how far back you want to go and how much time you want to spend on it. However much time you devote to it, though, you'll surely discover that sense of understanding and wonder that looking into your past can provide. You'll probably find that it gets addictive--the more you find out, the more questions you'll have; the more questions that arise, the more you'll want to explore. Next time we'll plunge headfirst into the research phase. We'll explore some of the most popular databases and really tackle the nitty-gritty of how to find that hard-to-locate information.
