transcribed by E Lorinczi THE RECORD, Hoffman Estates, IL October 20, 1965 CRASH KILLS MOTHER OF 3 An automobile collision near Bartlett took the life of a Schaumburg woman this week. Dead is Mrs. Alice T. Stastny, 36, 6 Dartmouth Ln, a passenger in the car driven by her husband, Jerry V. Stastny. Both Stastny and the driver of the other vehicle, Joseph V. DeGraw, 50, Elgin, were taken to Sherman Hospital where their condition is reported as serious but improving. Bartlett police, called to the scene, were unable to determine immediately how the accident, which cocured on Rt. 59 about one block south of the intersection of W. Bartlett Rd had happened. They theorized that Stastny was traveling in the northbound lane and DeGraw in the southbound land when the collision occurred. The road at this point crests a hill and there is also a sharp curve. Neither man could be questioned because of their injuries and no traffic tickets have been issued. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Stastny is survived by three daughters, April, 18, June, 15 and Dawn, 11. r

It wasn't hers, and so far as she knew it, it wasn't supposed to be there. It took several telephone calls by Eleanore Black, Girl Friday for the Schaumburg police, to locate the horse's owner - the Sunny Ridge Farm on Roselle Rd. Sunny Ridge officials explained that the animal had apparently escaped while horsing around.

transcribed by E Lorinczi THE RECORD, Hoffman Estates, IL June 9, 1965 HOFFMAN MAN IS DEAD Robert Carcia, 100 Highland Ct., in Hoffman Estates, was pronounced dead on arrival at Northwest Community Hospital last Thursday following a seizure he suffered in the home of his daughter-inl-aw, Geraldine Garcia, of the same address. The family physician attributed Garcia's death to a coronary. The body was removed to the Lauterberg and Oehler funeral home in Arlington Heights.

THE RECORD, Hoffman Estates, IL April 21, 1965 STREET LIGHT OK'D AT NERGE AND 53 The dark corner of Nerge Rd. and Route 53 will soon be illuminated with a street light because of the efforts of the Sunset Hills Homeowners Association in Schaumburg Township. The request for a street light was first made by Betty E. Seelbach, secretary of the association, in a letter dated Jan. 12, 1965, to Seymour Simon. Mrs. Seelbach received word recently from Andrew V. Plummer, county highway commissioner, that the light request had been approved and that installation will follow in the near future. Public Service Co., officials said the illumination should be equipped with an external glare shield. Cost to the county will be $75.84 a year.

transcribed by E Lorinczi THE RECORD, Hoffman Estates, IL April 21, 1965 LAD FROM VILLAGE IS SLAIN Tragedy struck the Hoffman-Schaumburg community Sunday as the 15-year old son of a Schaumburg police officer was stabbed to death on a street in Chicago. Peter M. Swistowicz, Jr., whose father is a reserve patrolman for the village police department, was visiting his uncle at 3252 S. Halstead St. Young Swistowicz was walking along Halstead in the company of Daniel Weyers, another Schaumburg youth, when a 1965 Corvair automobile pulled up. In it were four young people, two boys and two girls. Schaumburg Police Chief Martin Conroy told The RECORD that the two Schaumburg boys stopped to look at the automobile and were questioned by one of the car's occupants, identified as Kenneth Coit, 20, of Chicago. The other male occupant Conroy identified as Joseph Corbett, also of Chicago. The youth identified as Coit was reported to leave the car, back young Swistowicz against a store front at 3201 S. Halstead, and stab the Schaumburg boy with a knife in the right chest. Conroy said the assailant then took flight in the automobile. Time was approximately 8:30 p.m. The Schaumburg lad was mortally wounded. He said to Weyers, "I've been stabbed,' walked a few feet and fainted. He died one hour later after being rushed to Evangelical Hospital. Conroy said Chicago police had reported that Coit, apprehended after returning to the scene of the stabbing, had made an oral confession giving no reason for the fatal attack. Young Swistowicz, described by Conroy as a "decent and honest boy," is survived by a sister, age 18, and his parents who live at 54 Wellesly Ct. in Weathersfield. He was a senior at Palatine High School.

He was an Explorer Scout on a day's outing. The youth was in a canoe that overturned on Stoltz Farm Quarry, Hoffman Estates. The quarry, dug as part of the excavation for the Northwest Tollway, is on Central Road. The boy drowned despite efforts of the Hoffman Estates police and fire departments, assisted by units from West Dundee and Carpentersville. A companion, Frank Lowe, 15, of Rolling Meadows, was taken to Northwest Community Hospital for treatment.

transcribed by E Lorinczi THE RECORD, Hoffman Estates, IL Wednesday December 15, 1965 SUE KNEIDEK CLARK KILLED IN LOCAL AUTO ACCIDENT Hoffman Estates had its first fatal motor accident in more than a year Sunday evening when Mrs. Allen Clark, 18, 1230 Algonquin Rd., Des Plaines was fatally injured in a two car collision at Higgins Rd and Aztec St. Mrs. Clark, a passenger in a car drive by her husband, was pronounced dead on arrival at Northwest Community Hospital. The young couple, who were married only recently, were former Hoffmanites. Mrs. Clark was the former Susan Kneidek, whose parents, Mr. and Mrs. Anthony J. Kneidek, reside at 232 Western St. Clark's parents are Mr. and Mrs. Orville B. Clark, 231 Hawthorne Ln. Mrs. Clark graduated from Palatine High School last June, her husband in 1964. Clark, 19, was admitted to the hospital with possible internal injuries and he was placed under sedation. Harlan J. Stone, 18, driver of the other car, suffered loosened teeth and minor abrasions, according to H.E. Police Sgt. Raymond Schneider, who investigated the accident. Schneider said no witnesses were available who had seen the accident occur. He said Clark was crossing Higgins Rd from Ash Rd into Aztec St and that the Stone car was moving east on Higgins when the crash occured.

MANNING DIES Friends of Robert Manning, a Hoffman Estates policeman for the last 18 months, were grieved to learn of the death of his wife, Nancy. Mrs. Manning, 29, died in Northwest Community hospital Monday night at 6:40. Mrs. Manning had been a patient at the hospital for eight days. Hartman VFW Post 8080 of Hoffman Estates held Memorial Day services at the grave of the man for whom their post was named. Before the grave-side ceremonies, held at Schaumburg cemetery, the members attended services at St. Peters Lutheran Church to hear a service conducted by Pastor John R. Steinberg. At Hartman's grave, Post Commander Charles Camel delivered a short commemorative talk while the color guard stood at attention. The guard consisted of Bob Hornsby, Gene Lewandowski, Bob Sullivan, Mary Reed and Loy Solovay. Post Chaplain Ken Blicki said prayers and Service Officer Scotty Huden planted flowers on Hartman's grave. The Post also placed flags and flowers on all veterans buried in the cemetery.

Bob Atcher was justifiable proud of his converted barn house, and the people of this entire area must sympathize with him and his family in their loss. In a way, his house was a symbol of this area. It represented the traditions of old Schaumburg Center, which has seen gamblers and bootleggers come and go while serving the families of descendents of the Germans who homesteaded this land. The conversion of the barn to a house foreshadowed the conversion of the homestead farms to suburban subdivisions. It was appropriate that the owner of this house-barn is also president of the rural village of Schaumburg around it. The residents, new and old, of that village will miss the symbol of their tradition. Yet adversity has its compensations, During the blaze, a Hoffman Estates policeman directed traffic at the intersection of Roselle and Schaumburg roads, located in Schaumburg village. Helping to fight the fire was the Hoffman Estates fire department. Schaumburg and Hoffman have found little to co-operate in over their histories. Perhaps last Sunday's fire is a good way to begin. Perhaps greater understanding and good will between the two villages will rise Phoenix-like from the ashes of Bob Atcher's house.

Thursday May 23, 1963 A barn was destroyed by fire Tuesday afternoon on the farm of Dr. S.A. Demicile on the southeast corner of Bode and Barrington roads. The loss was estimated at $8,000. One thousand bales of hay were also destroyed. The alarm reached the Roselle rural fire department at 4:10 p.m. The building was far gone when the firemen arrived. Fire departments from Bartlett, Hoffman Estates, and Ontarioville also answered the call. Strong winds hampered the firemen. The cause of the fire was undetermined.

Services were held Saturday at the St. James Episcopal Church in West Dundee. Police Chiefs from Hoffman Estates, Carpentersville, Sleepy Hollow, Roselle and Elk Grove Village attended the services and formed the honor guard in front of the church. Schaumburg police officers served as pallbearers. they also stood as the honor guard at his wake. Barrett is survived by his wife, Lorraine, and one son, Timothy, 4, residing at 163 Austin, Carpentersville.

transcribed by E Lorinczi THE RECORD, Roselle, Illinois newspaper December 13, 1962 6 YEARS AGO SCHAUMBERG* RESIDENTS TOTALS 135: NOW 6,000 Schaumburg Village's history was outlined briefly by village president Bob Atcher and village attorney Jack Siegel at an informal meeting last week. The village was incorporated six years ago when it had a population of 135. Residents paid $3,500 in corporation feels out of their own pockets. Village population is now close to 6,000 and the village how has $200,000 in its treasury. This money is invested in short term federal notes. since its incorporation, the village has not levied a general tax, nor does it charge for its vehicle sticker. Village revenue comes from sales tax, police fines, liquor permits and building permits. building permits are the principal source of funds, Atcher said. The village derives one-half cent in sales tax for each dollar spent within its boundaries. One of the factors in the village's being able to operate without taxes is that all village officials serve without pay. This, Atcher feels, has attracted to the board and its commissions men who are unselfish and interested only in servicing the community. The only paid workers in the village are two policemen and the police chief, the village attorney and an engineer. *Yes, the paper called it "Schaumberg" in the header but "Schaumburg" in the article.

After the death of her father, Mary, her mother, and brother, Joe Fearn, moved to Elgin. Mary began working in a garment factory at age 14, then, after a short time, she began working at Elgin National Watch Company. Later she was employed by Shakeproof Division of Illinois Tool Works, where she had various jobs for nearly 30 years. Mary met and later married Elroy Wiese on April 11, 1942. They lived on a farm north of Elgin for a time until the tollway came and forced them off the farm. They moved to Elgin, making their home on Logan Street, until Elroy died in 1975. Mary continued to live in her home until 1979, when she retired and moved to Mount Ayr, where she ! > became very active in community projects. She was an active member of the Ringgold County Hospital Auxiliary, the Mount Ayr Chamber of Commerce, Welcome Wagon, First Christian Church and Clearview Nursing Home.
