    3. St. Johannes Cemetery Alliance SJCA eNews Saturday, July 23, 2005 My Apologies for This Very Late Edition of the SJCA eNews Again, my computer, with the mailing list for this newsletter, was on the blink. However, it is now up-and-running again, and so I wanted to get this short issue off to everyone and bring you up-to-date on all that's happening around the St. Johannes/Rest Haven Cemetery issue. .. and there is actually not much at the present to report. * The massive preliminary EIS report from the FAA contained almost nothing in regards to the future of the cemeteries. More like a "we'll address this issue later" approach. * All of the legal teams, representing our sacred cemeteries, continue to submit affidavits to the FAA, indicating why the proposed expansion project is a bad idea on all levels of concerns. * The Department of the Interior (Federal level) and the FAA and State (State Level) are locked up as to whether St. Johannes Cemetery is eligible status as a federal historical landmark. The Interior Department says "yes". The local FAA and State preservation folks (guess whose pocket they are in) say "no". Meanwhile, all the red tape is being worked through to establish St. Johannes as a federal landmark. * The next period of activity should be accruing around September, as the FAA releases its final EIS statement as to the feasibility of the O'Hare Modernization Plan. When events begin happening I will do my best to keep everyone informed on what's taking place and if any action may be needed on our part. Our Words of Thanks I would like to take this time to again lift up words of Thank You to the fine team of attorneys who continue to press the case, with the FAA and in court, for the protection of both St. Johannes and Rest Haven Cemeteries. Words of appreciation go out to: Joe Karaganis, Esq. John Mauck, Esq. The Becket Fund The Alliance Defense Fund Bob Sell, Esq., who continues to be a spokesman for St. John UCC, and its liaison with all members of the legal team. On behalf of all the members of St. John UCC and the SJCA eNews list, we Thank You for all your continuing support and efforts. And a sincere "Thank You" to everyone on the SJCA eNews mailing list, for your continued concern, support and prayers. Michael Kirchhoff ________________________________________ Rev. 3. Grace, What I have is what I have found on the Internet. I am trying to piece this family together as I had nothing to go from except for my great grandmother's name, Elisabeth Wille. I found Heinrich and Dora Wille coming to the US on May 4, 1872 on the Vandalia from Hamburg on May 4, 1872. With them were Elisabeth born 1852(my great grandmother), Wilhelmina born 1864 and Frederick born 1866. On the manifest it says they were from Gross Wanzer, Sachen-Anhalt, Germany. I found Wilhelmina marrying Fred Topel in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois on August 24, 1883. On the 1900 census I find Fred, Wilhelmina(Minnie) and their children Ewald born March 1884, Carrie born October 1886, Amanda born June 1888, Fritz born November 1889, Mirgine born August 1893 and Helen born October 1896. Wilhelmina's mother, Dora Wille, is living with them at this time. Heinrich Wille died in 1897 in Clayton County, Iowa. The census lists Fred Topel as a brick layer. They lived at 311 Johnson Avenue. I think it is near East 76th Street in Chicago. Now, I have found there are Topel's who moved to Allamakee County, Iowa. I do not know if they belong to the Topel family I am talking about or not. My great grandmother married John Carl Meyer in Chicago on September 27, 1872 and they moved to Clayton County, Iowa in 1874. Allamakee County is just to the North of Clayton County along the Mississippi River. Many German families moved there from Chicago. Do you have any more names and dates I could work from for your Topel's? The name Thies is familiar to me as there are some people by that name here in Sioux Falls, SD. How do the Thies' fit into your tree? I tried to get death certificates for Fred and Wilhelmina Topel and several other Topel's but got the letter back for more money. Now that I have the money I cannot find the letter. Will keep looking. Has this answered any of your questions? 3. ARMISTEAD JULY72005 Cultural director pens area's local history BY CATHERINE STIER CONTRIBUTOR Betsy Armistead admits she's an "accidental author." "The authorship was kind of thrust upon me, so I guess that sums it up well," she said with a laugh. She's referring to her role in the new book "Schaumburg," part of Arcadia Publishing's "Images of America" series which debuted in November with Armistead and the Village of Schaumburg credited as the authors. Armistead, the village's director of cultural services since 1985, headed up the project. The book offers a rich pictorial history of the village. Photographs from the mid 1800s to the present, captioned with detailed explanations, bring to life the history of a village which began as a German settlement and grew into a thriving Chicago suburb with its own nature preserves, airport, mega mall and baseball team. "This is certainly not meant to be a comprehensive history, but I still think a lot may be learned about a community through a photographic study like this," she said. A turn through the book offers glimpses of the cowboy-attired country singer Bob Atcher who would become mayor, a parade float fashioned of home-grown peonies, and the former hotel rumored to have once served as a house of ill repute visited by Al Capone. It shows the 1928 second-grade class of St. Peter Lutheran School and the aftermath of a tornado that ripped through Schaumburg in 1933. The book also showcases portraits of early residents who settled, farmed and raised families in the area including the Boegers, Redeckers, Hartmanns, and Rohlwings. The book has its fans, including Schaumburg Mayor Al Larson. "I thought it was a great piece of work Betsy did, compiling the photos and writing the narrative. I was very impressed," he said. "It is important that people have an understanding of how Schaumburg began and how we came to where we are today." Larson provides a postscript in the book, in which he writes of Schaumburg's "dreamers and doers," both of the past and today. The book began as a project discussed by the Millennium Committee, a group formed to plan events for the year 2000. At a meeting, Armistead mentioned seeing pictorial books about other communities put out by Arcadia Publishing. Her suggestion led to Armistead herself being tapped to captain the project. The book, however, would not be ready for the Millennium observances. "We were gathering photos for three to four years," said Armistead. Maggie Atcher, wife of former Mayor Bob Atcher and LaVonne Presley, author of "A Schaumburg Farm 1935-1964," as well as other current and former residents came forward to share their family photos. Armistead then faced the daunting task of sorting, categorizing and evaluating photos for publication. "It took about six months once the photos were in place," to caption each picture she said. The days before deadline proved especially grueling. "August of last year is kind of a blur for me," she said. The book retails for $19.99 and is available at local and online booksellers and at the publisher's Web site at www.arcadiapublishing.com. It is also sold at the Spring Valley Nature Center and Village Hall. "People have come in and they've bought more than one (copy)," said Larson. "They've bought them to send to relatives and friends who have moved away." "The book has sold very well," said Armistead. "It went into a second printing." Resident Karen Williams, an Instructional Assistant at Stevenson Elementary, first saw the book while shopping with a friend at Woodfield Mall. "When I picked it up and started flipping through it, I thought it was very interesting," she said. "This is where my kids are growing up." Then an 1850s photo of a village crossroads caught her eye. "I saw the picture of the corner of Roselle and Schaumburg when they were both dirt roads, and I thought, 'Wow, that's right down the street.'" She immediately purchased the book. Armistead reports that a member of the Sister Cities Commission brought a dozen or so to the village's Sister City in Schaumburg, Germany. While not completed in time for the Millennium celebration, Armistead points out the book's release proved timely, nonetheless. "We do have a 50th anniversary coming up in 2006 of Schaumburg's incorporation. I can see the book being used throughout that year," she said. Proceeds from the books will fund 50th anniversary celebration activities.
