    3. Hi Karen & List, I always wondering where the early Rohrssen's were buried. I never knew about Hoosier Grove until last week. I was quite surprised when I looked over your family group sheet you sent me. I knew very little about the Rohrssen's and Hechts. I recently started my research and found a several items I think you will find interesting. I'll fill in as much of the family sheet you sent me and send it to the list. 1. SEARCHING in the LIST archives HOWTOS
    2. .... valentine53179
    3. OUR OFFICIAL list name is IL-COOK-SCHAUMBURG SEARCHING in the LIST ARCHIVES HOWTOS INTERACTIVE SEARCH and THREADED ARCHIVES Here is a step by step for those who have yet to try looking at the archives of the great Rootsweb.com mailing lists for information that might have been posted in the past that might link to your family..... Once you find out how simple it is to use the archives, you will be using them as your PERSONAL FILE CABINETS.... and lots of the clipping that you do of list submittals will diminish all BECAUSE it will be IN THE ARCHIVES..... Once you learn it for ROOTS, or gen-newbie, you will be able to apply it to ANY of the rootsweb.com lists.... and you can SEARCH or BROWSE any list whether you are subscribed OR NOT..... all the while, looking for the wealth of information waiting for you to find it.... Think of the list archives as a LIBRARY on LINE - 24 hours a day..... For example, if you are looking for the HOWTOS (stuff I have written about HOW to Do somethin') comments........ first.... go to rootsweb.com then scroll to the mailing lists grouping on the left side.... now scroll to INTERACTIVE SEARCH (this is the one where you use query word or words to SEARCH) click on it... Now since I wrote this originally for the ROOTS list, and this example is for that list, enter in the official name of ROOTS.. (or try on your own search words on the list of import such as gen-newbie or NYERIE or cook-co-il) let me call attention to the fact that there is ...no -M or -L. or -D in the list name...... Click submit..... now enter in HOWTOS (if you are looking in a year other than THIS YEAR, then check the year of interest) or whatever query word you are interested in and submit.... when you get results, click on the FULL and the message will open. You will get the emails for all of the noted year-to-date that had HOWTOS in the content or subject.... NOTE... symbols work ONLY if in the email addresses... but they do NOT work as stand alone... and search terms and techniques do NOT work like google... they work ONLY as illustrated on the top of the query box... with AND etc. NOW if you would like to just look at or browse the messages - like reading a newspaper - BROWSING - but that means ALL of the messages of only a SPECIFIC MONTH, just as you would the paper for that month by the titles of the articles, then you would BROWSE the Threaded Archives.... ("threaded" means "linked" to each other emails determined by the REPLY TO response of the senders, not just the subject) so, go back to rootsweb.com home page.... down to the mailing list grouping again on the left side and click on THREADED ARCHIVES..... enter in ROOTS......or other official mailing list name (remember, that part before the -L@rootsweb.com<mailto:-L@rootsweb.com>) click on the MONTH and YEAR OF INTEREST .... and ALL the messages for the month will show..... they are threaded, whereas everyone that answered a specific message by replying to the email will be indented under the original post.... NOW if you want to see the messages in the SAME order that they came to your machine, then go up to the top area of the page where it says "threaded".... and open it.... scroll to CHRONOLOGICAL and click WITH DATES and click on REDISPLAY.... all the messages will be redisplayed in the same order that you saw them.... (here is a relatively new option and that is rev-chronological and it places the messages in reverse order......newest first, but treaded not unthreaded..) IN both of these archive result formats, your CONTORL+F will work on the listing of posts but will only work for the words found in the subjects.... (another reason for having good, complete informative subjects!) CONTROL+F DOES not search the content of the post. valentine

The piece will be officially unveiled Monday evening. Painting finds its way home BY MYRNA PETLICKI CONTRIBUTOR Schaumburg Review A painting by world-renowned Schaumburg artist Suzanne Schweig Langsdorf -- known professionally as Martyl -- has found its way back to that suburb in a surprising way. The Schaumburg Township District LiAbrary purchased "The Sea of Galway" on eBay, to add to its growing art collection. The piece will be officially unveiled Monday evening. "I would like to buy a number of paintings by this artist since she spent most of her life here in Schaumburg," said library director Michael Madden. "It's just that most of them are kind of expensive. I tried to buy another one that she did in the 1940s, but I wasn't successful in the bidding. I'm hoping over time we can acquire four, five or six that would show her artistic development." Martyl laughed as she described her "astonishment" at the library's latest acquisition. "The Sea of Galway," which she painted in 1963, was originally owned by someone in La Jolla, California. "Apparently the museum in La Jolla had an art rental program and it was in that for awhile, and then someone bought it out of that museum," Martyl said. A memorable time The work, primarily in subdued gray, blue and green pastel shades, is an evocative landscape with an abstract quality. It was created during a memorable time in the artist's life. Martyl lived in the United Kingdom for a year-and-a-half in the 1960s. During that time she took a trip from Dublin to Galway, which inspired a number of paintings. "Ireland really is the Emerald Isle -- it's staggeringly green," she said. "It was inspiring in its color and in the sea there." The work was dirty when it arrived at the library, so Martyl volunteered to restore it. "It's always better that an artist restores his own work," she explained. Her method was to clean a tiny portion of the painting at a time with a cotton swab and distilled water. She also restored the period, gold leaf frame. Sense of place Martyl has been an artist since childhood, inspired by her mother, artist Aimee Schweig. Known for her landscape work, Martyl also does portraits on commission. "It's my respect for nature that seems to come through," Martyl said. "What some critics have always said -- and I agree -- is that I have a sense of place. In other words, if I do Ireland, it's not going to be Eastern Turkey." The widely-traveled artist knows both of those places well. In 1979, she drew and painted for several months at an archeological excavation in Eastern Turkey for the Oriental Institute of the University of Chicago. Her adventures have also included serving as an artist-in-residence for Washington University in the 1960s on a ship that sailed to the northern islands of Greece. She also worked in Egypt in 1986 at the request of the Brooklyn Museum. Creating art is "a way of life" for her, Martyl said. "If I'm away from it too long, I get really cranky. I'd like to keep on doing what I'm doing the best I can, which apparently is pretty good." She laughingly added, "I don't have any false modesty anymore!" 3. Longtime Dist. 211 official buried By Chad Brooks Daily Herald Staff Writer Posted Wednesday, August 03, 2005 ADVERTISEMENT Friends and family remembered Buren Moore, a former summer school principal and teacher in Palatine-Schaumburg High School District 211, during his recent funeral services. Moore, 93, was buried Thursday in Albion, Ill., after dying July 23 at the Rosewood Care Center in Inverness. Born July 5, 1912, in Ellery, Ill., Moore went on to graduate from Albion High School and began his teaching career at a one-room schoolhouse in southern Illinois, where he taught kids in kindergarten through the eighth grade . "He came from very humble country roots," said Patricia McKown, Moore's daughter. McKown said her father began his career at Palatine High School in 1957 as a mathematics teacher, and later served as the district's summer school principal for several years. "He also moonlighted by driving a school bus before and after school, and then he stocked the shelves at Jewel in the evenings," McKown said. He retired in 1971 after 39 years as a school teacher or administrator. "He really liked young people," McKown said of one reason she thought her father stayed in the education field for so long. "He really liked going to all of the high school activities." While he didn't have much free time while teaching, after retiring, McKown said, Moore spent his time playing golf and woodworking, going as far as to build his own grandfather clock, cabinets and dollhouses for his kids. During his life, McKown said Moore was forced to deal with the deaths of his first wife, Mary Jo Byrne, his second wife, Waneta Bosecker and his daughter, Kathryn Moore. "He was a very strong man," McKown said. Buren is survived by his three children, Patricia (Paul) McKown of Palatine; Gary Moore of Sawyerville, Ill.; and Donald (Barb) Moore of Carpentersville; four stepchildren, Dan Bosecker, Don Bosecker, Kay Peach, and Karen McCormick; eight grandchildren; six stepgrandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and six step great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, six brothers and one daughter. Moore has requested memorials be made to the Bethel Church Cemetery Fund, the Golden Gate United Methodist Church or the Albion Senior Center.

    3. 1992-01-23 Chicago Tribune (IL) ODLUM FARM`S GERTRUDE M. ODLUM, 96 By Jerry Crimmins. Edition: Chicago Tribune Gertrude McNaught Odlum, 96, a businesswoman, breeder of champion dairy cattle and landowner in the northwest suburbs, died Tuesday in her home in River Forest. Mrs. Odlum owned two approximately 500-acre farms in what is now called the northwest corridor, between Lake Street and the Northwest Tollway. Her farm in Schaumburg, known as Rolling Acres, was sold to developers in 1986 for $20 million. The second farm, known as the Odlum Farm, between Hanover Park and Roselle, which was the largest tract remaining in that area, was sold to developers in 1989 for $35 million to $40 million. Until 1990, Mrs. Odlum was chairman of the board and a former president and secretary-treasurer of Duro Metal Products Co. of Chicago, which was co- founded by her two late husbands in 1917. The company, which was once one of the largest manufacturers of hand tools in the U.S., was dissolved in 1990, said Gary Reed, one of the co- executors of her estate. Mrs. Odlum also served on the boards of nine Chicago-based corporations, and was a board member of the Bensenville Home Society and St. Paul`s House in Chicago. Born in Chicago, Mrs. Odlum first married Norris McNaught, who bought Rolling Acres in 1937 at what is now Barrington and Schaumburg Roads north of Lake Street. ``We could make it from River Forest in nothing flat,`` Mrs. Odlum recalled in a 1987 Tribune interview. ``It was all nothing on Lake Street. Schaumburg was nothing. It had a feed store and two taverns, that`s it.`` McNaught died in 1942. His widow ignored advice to sell and decided to fulfill her late husband`s dream of raising the top herd of cattle in the country. In 1967, her Rolling Acres Farm won the coveted awards of both premier exhibitor and premier breeder of Guernsey cattle at the International Livestock Exposition in Chicago. That year, she also won the purple ribbon for the grand champion Guernsey cow at the exposition for the fifth straight year. In 1966, she married her business partner and longtime friend, Harry Odlum. He owned the Odlum Farm and also raised Guernseys. Odlum died in 1974. Mrs. Odlum lamented the foreseeable loss of her farmlands to expanding suburbia, but said, ``I want to see it developed into something great, not just a lot of little homes on it.`` About 400 acres of the Odlum Farm is being developed for a mixed-use industrial park, said the developer`s attorney, Joseph Ash. At the old Rolling Acres Farm, 201 acres was set aside for office buildings and shopping centers. Mrs. Odlum is survived by a sister, Alma Schroeder.
