    1. Re: [IL-COOK-CHICAGO] Address Assistance
    2. Okay, let me ask a question. Do any of you know if there are [or were] City Directories for the subs after 1928 -29? I can not find Emma Rose between 1924 - 1944. In 1924 she is shown in the obit of her father [1924] as Emma Rose at Oak Glen [Lansing] and in the obit of her mother [1944] as Mrs. E. Burton of Lansing. Emma Rose Burton died 13 Sept 1961 in Hollywood, FL [no mention of Mr. Burton or her marriage]. Emma was born 27 Dec 1897 in Oak Glen, Cook Co., IL to Carl Rose and Hedwig [Solchow] Rose. I do not believe that Emma ever had any children. The City Directories began in 1839, usually listing the head of the household, occupation, a home address, and sometimes a business address. Directories were also split into two sections, the General Directory and the Business Directory. Later City Directories seem to include anyone working in a household. They City Directories were more or less annual publications through 1917. Two issues were published after that; one in 1923 and one in 1928. There is also Polk's Reverse Directory 1928-29, which is searchable by address: http://www.chsmedia.org/househistory/polk/start.pdf Chicago Telephone Books were/are separate publications that began sometime in the 1880s. Unfortunately, the two are often confused or thought to be one and the same. I'm very sorry, though, that I can't help you on this; there are no "reverse" directories, that I know of for those years. City directories stopped in the late 1920's and were replaced by phone books. Only those who had private lines were listed, I believe; Party lines, weren't. (List, please correct me if my understanding is incorrect). If you are looking for specific surnames, you can ask for a surname look-up here; maybe a list member will volunteer for you. Otherwise, the Arlington Heights Memorial Library has phone books and will do paid look-ups. Good Luck!
